Burgundy LaRue
The original is solid, save for the corny attempts at humor. And it ended on a creepy note, which elevated the fear factor. This remake looks pretty good, and is due out October 16.
piranesi
I'm still trying to figure out if young Curt was exposed to a bunch of porn about James Woods or if it was a bunch of porn that James Woods owned. Both will have messed you up, but the insurance coverage for the therapy is much better if it was about James Woods.
Curt McGirt
Okay Mr. McFarland, just so you don't have to look it up: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=woods%20porn&defid=2899593 Note: those people that posted that shit are fucking creepy. And I refuse to associate shite bands like Shadows Fall or From Autumn To Ashes with something cool like free pornography found in the woods when you are a kid. Jesus, two posts about Mathilda May and we go right down the rabbit hole... maybe someone can watch Cannibal Holocaust for the first time next and we can take a complete dive haha
Curt McGirt
Oh yeah, I didn't think of the obvious joke that Videodrome was said James Woods porn and I did watch it around that time, so hey, relevant at least

Reed
Oculus had an interesting first half...but I thought it just spiraled into a mess by the end. I also found the lead female character so unlikable. Like, even by horror movie standards, she was so frigging stupid. I've seen other movies where protagonists get mixed up in bad business, but at least they usually don't realize until it's too late what they're messing with (The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity). Here, she knew going in exactly what she was fucking with and still locked herself in a house with it.
J.T.
Oculus had an interesting first half...but I thought it just spiraled into a mess by the end. Here, she knew going in exactly what she was fucking with and still locked herself in a house with it. That's the thing. I don't think Kaylie even had a clue what she was up against. She knew the history of the mirror but severely underestimated what supernatural evil is truly capable of when it is really pissed off. Kaylie and her brother had cracked the mirror when they were kids, so the entity knew that Kaylie and her brother were aware of a vulnurability that could be exploited. However, vulnurable <> weak. If anything, it made the entity even more dangerous and the brother and sister found that out in the last fourty minutes of this rather confusing tale. I have seen the short film that inspired this movie so I kinda know that: the mirror controlled them the entire time. When they weren't standing there staring at it, they were wandering around oblivious. The mirror loosened its control on them from time to time in order to feed on their fear. Mesmerized automatons don't get frightened..
Reed
Yeah but it did kill her parents in a pretty gruesome manner and destroy her family, so she had to have some idea of what it was capable of . Sure, wanting to clear your dad's name is an honorable cause and maybe most would feel the same...but you can do it at a distance. Of course, I wouldn't rule out that the mirror may have cast some sort of spell on her, hence why she was so totally obsessed with getting it in her possession again. But I think they could have made that clearer. As it was, I thought she just came off as recklessly stupid.
Brian Fowler
I haven't seen the movie, I need to say that upfront. But, I'm sorry, but I can't take the concept of "evil mirror" seriously. THROW IT AWAY. Done and done.
Reed
The only thing that could defeat an evil mirror is a vampire surely?

New Blood
I had thought I saw Trick R Treat [2007] before but I realized that I had not finished it for whatever reason. I'm gonna treat this as a first time watch. I can't believe I didn't watch this film more. I absolutely loved this film. Nothing beats a great anthology horror film and this might be my favorite as I'm typing this. I think this film, along with Carpenter's Halloween, really sums up the atmosphere and the wonder of Halloween. I love how each story, in one way or another, are interconnected and how characters who keep to the traditions of the Halloween are spared and those who mock it or try to cause harm to others are not. I love how it shows the various ways people look at the holiday, from the traditions to kids trick or treating to teenagers partying and looking to get laid and the always present grouch. I really don't want to give anything of the plot away but if anyone hasn't seen this, they really need to check this out. I'm gonna have to watch this all time. This will be high on my First Time Watch list at the end of the year. Blood Rage [1987] - A slightly generic slasher but stands out as having actually really good gore and doesn't shy away from it. A man is sent to the insane asylum for a brutal murder committed by his evil twin. He breaks out to show his innocence while his twin begins to kill and blame it on him again. This also has a pretty downbeat ending which I think is quite refreshing from slasher standards. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer [1986] - This was a rewatch. If there was a horror film that still really frightened me, this would be it (and William Lustig's MANIAC). Besides being based on a true life serial killer, everyone is amazing in this as they protray the chacters with some weight and that home invasion scene is downright frightening. Actually everything in this film is. I didn't quite care for this when I was younger as I was going through a hardcore gore phase. While this did have some really good gore effects, this isn't like a Fulci film or a Hong Kong CAT III film. I've been thinking of doing a top 31 favorite horror films list and this would be pretty high on it. The Legend of Boggy Creek [1972] - I really wanted to like this more than I did. This is a faux-documentary film based on a Sasquatch like creature running around the backwoods of Arkansas. While I did enjoy the atmosphere of this, I think there were a few too many slow moments that kinda bogged down the pacing of this. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark [1988] - I wanted to watch something fun and of the season and I decided to watch this. Not much to say about this. If you enjoyed the character, you should get something out of this. I like the character and found this to be funny (not immensely funny but funny nonetheless). Spritenaut 32
But, I'm sorry, but I can't take the concept of "evil mirror" seriously. THROW IT AWAY. Done and done. Don't even need to do that. Just go to Wal-Mart and buy the evil mirror's mortal enemy: a really big sheet. Stand a few feet away, throw big sheet over mirror, forget about it and go play outside.
jaedmc
Yeah that sounds good in theory, until Evil Mirror's friend Uncharacteristically Strong Wind comes blowin through and takes care of Really Big Sheet.
piranesi
Sadly most evil mirrors today have the ihaunt app which allows them to remotely control the reflection on your super-reflective smart phone glass. THEY"RE MOBILE, BABIES!!!!
Travis Sheldon
Just watched Oculus. What if the evil mirror makes you think you went to Walmart, but really you went to Kmart instead? Talk about Zombieland.
piranesi
Never happen. They smell different. One smells like pee, the other like death. Oculus can't fix that.
Reed
I have come to the conclusion recently that every big time horror film released is from "the makers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious." Like, they must be really busy people.
nate
Never happen. They smell different. One smells like pee, the other like death. Oculus can't fix that. I submit that they both smell like pee and death, akin to post-mortem voiding. So, the advantage still goes to the mirror.
New Blood
The Wicker Man [1973] - This was a rewatch and I like even more than the first time I watched it. Alucarda [1977] - Really dug this. This is the trashy, distant Mexican cousin to The Devils but with more witchery. "A young girl's arrival at a convent after the death of her parents marks the beginning of a series of events that unleash an evil presence on the girl and her mysterious new friend, an enigmatic figure known as Alucarda." You have big hair, a shitload of screaming, demon possession, a good amount of nudity, Satanic rituals, an disappearing and reappearing man in bad goblin makeup, screaming, a ton of atmosphere, fog, and even more screaming. The Conjuring [2013] - Another rewatch and I still really love this film and think it's above all of the other haunted house films that came out in recent years by a very large margin. piranesi
MeTV's twitter continues to give me what I crave: I'm not sure why he seems to have a wasp colony living in his hair. Also I pray to God they had enough sense not to turn Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington into a mask like this. He's on the box...and it was the 70s, but dear God....Dear sweet Lord and Savior, Cleavon Little, Pray for us!
