The Mass Effect thread

Recommended Posts

OH!

Also totally forgot - for the first time in FOREVER - I had a session where I asked the game to drop me into Silver and instead it dropped me into a Gold match.

Shocker I was totally ill prepared as I had my Level 16 Male Quarian Engineering (along with the wrong assualt rifle as I had finished Adas mastery and had meant to switch to my Harrier)

But yeah again trucked along to full extraction (with the help of spamming grenades the last like two missions) so God - I am starting to think more and more about Map Mastery

I think we could survive some Gold matches.  If we used Quarians or characters with Energy Drain and fought Geth all of the time, we'd do really well.

We'd still need to finish Solo mastery to get the big Mass Effect award. I do not see that happening in my lifetime.

Well I used to think I sucked at anything other than the Juggernaut but yeah - now I am realizing that as long as it's not basically a Drell and the party sticks together - you can survive.

Well and get the proper objectives. I think we got a hack on Wave 3, Targets at Wave 6 and a moderately short Escort on Wave 10.

I mean devices on anything past 3 with out a fully cloaked Infiltrator would have been death

I probably wouldn't play a Drell or a Volus since they are squishier than usual and I'd be hesitant to play Vorcha.  I would rule with the N7 Paladin since I know how to spec it to cause Cryo-Explosions at will.

Hesitant to play Vorcha??? I take back your superfan award.

Because of the math (ie. shitty shields) not because it isn't fun to set things on fire or Omni-Claw someone's cranium into meat chunks.

There aren't too many good Gold match builds for Vorcha characters.

Started the first game Sunday. So far I'm up to the Krogan Battlemaster fight on the mission to rescue Liara. Its different from what I'm used but fun. I can see why people hate the Mako as its quite the pain in the ass to maneuver though somehow its not as bad as I imagined when I read about it here. I do hate the 3 person party system, but that is just a general thing I haven't been fond of since FFVII. I am curious how big an effect the Paragon/Renegade meter is supposed to have on my gameplay as they are kind of even at the moment.

Its more or less a holdover from playing older rpgs where you used 4. More bodies, more options. I don't outright dislike the 3-party system, but I will probably never be a big fan of it either. Probably doesn't help that I was expecting 4 after playing Dragon Age, but different creative teams and and styles.

That does remind me I seem to have trouble keeping people alive on occasion as they seem to refuse to take cover even when I tell them too. What is up with that?

And in regards to Paragon/Renegade

In the first Mass Effect - it is probably more important to work on either Charm or Intimidate since most of the choices tended to be based on that more than Paragon/Renegade (you do get some choices based on your Paragon or Renegade score but the BIG ONES (and you will know which ones I am talking about when they happen) are dictated by Charm or Intimidate

That changes in the 2nd and 3rd game

Been doing side quests, waiting to finish them up before heading to Feros or Novelia. The mako is starting to get on my nerves. Its crappy enough just trying to move around normally, but it really starts to suck whenever I have to fight geth. I find it particularly annoying how its the foot soldiers that are seemingly doing the real damage to the mako.

The Hammerhead will push you to alcholism with its shitty ability to absorb enemy fire and its dumb guided missles.  The Mako may handle like a pregnant cinder block but it is fucking sturdy and the main gun wipes shit off of the face of the planet.

Fire the main gun in first person mode (tight aim using left trigger IIRC) against enemies that are on foot and on third person (the default) against large targets.  You will be far more accurate.

Don't forget that you have a secondary auto-cannon in addition to the main slug thrower.  Use the auto-cannon in tight aim / first peson mode on single infantry and fire the main gun at groups.

Also use your motion sensors and exploit distance.   The main gun seems to have a range of a billion miles.  If there are guys on foot near an enemy base, I sit the Mako out a good distance and just pound the vicinity near the red dots until the shooting stops.

The other key with the Mako is either parking on a hill so you can shoot things and they cant hit you back (especially helpful for turrets)

Also learning how to use the thrusters to "hop" over missiles is your friend

My approach to the Mako is always the same.  Drive right into the middle of whatever is shooting at me and run over the biggest thing I can find.  While whatever I hit is trying to right itself, I hop out and continue the fight on foot.  Maybe not the smartest way to handle it, but it gives you extra XP and I don't have to worry about trying drive that damn tank.

The exception to that rule is when I've gotta fight turrets.  I usually try to take those out at long distance with my sniper rifle before moving in to mop up whatever is left.

Yeah, there is a significant XP penalty for using the Mako to kill enemies.

Whenever I fight Thresher Maws, I try to whittle them down to near death and attempt to score the miracle Sniper Rifle shot.  Getting full XP for kills makes the grind to Level 60 less traumatic during your second playthrough.
