City of Life and Death hits on a few aspects that I don't think most WWII movies ever hit on. Since it's kinda topical, one being the terrible treatment of comfort women. There were a few more recent movies about the Nanking massacre before that. It didn't stop it from being a damn good movie.
odessasteps
In an age where studios can be gunshy about portraying nations/races as bad guys in movies for fear of losing international box office, you cant go wrong with a wwii setting fighting nazis. Tarantino is still tossing around that Killer Crow idea. Who's not going to pay to see Sam Jackson and a bunch of other black dudes killing motherfuckers as they make their way through the Western Front? AxB
People would call it Inglourious Blacksterds. There were a couple of fairly recent 'black guys fighting nazis in WW2' movies anyway, the French one and the George Lucasone.

Actually, I believe they were suppose to meet the Basterds at some point in the movie. Then, QT took it out.
Elsalvajeloco
FWIW, the guy who directed The Connection with Jean Dujardin is doing HHhH with Jason Clarke as Reinhard Heydrich and Rosamund Pike as his wife. Plus, Zemeckis is doing a WWII romantic thriller with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard.
