twiztor Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 (edited) i didn't grow up with MTV so wasn't exposed to very many music videos. Now i'm looking for help. What videos can you think of that are completely or mostly animated? i feel like the most famous is a-ha's "Take On Me" but here's some others that i've uncovered. PLEASE SHARE MORE!! odessasteps Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 (edited) I’d have pegged this as most famous are you counting all the Peter Gabriel stop motion videos like sledgehammer and big time? are we discounting videos from animation from films, be it Disney or something like the Wall? odessasteps Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 (edited) Matthew Sweets girlfriend using clips from the anime Space Adventure Cobra All? Of the gorillaz videos? also, animated elements: Rasberry Beret, She Bop Edited September 18, 2022 by odessasteps 1
odessasteps Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 There are so many potential split hairs in this. Does “animated” just mean cartoons, either cel or computer? Do we count Rockit by Herbie Hancock or Land of Confusion by Genesis? Some of the Talking Heads videos? and Disney “music videos” could go back to Snow, White, When You Wish Upon a Star, Fantasia or Zip-a-Dee-Do-Da?
Execproducer Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 anything that charted should be fair game.
odessasteps Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 (edited) This was quite the innovation at the time, largely forgotten now Same with this, prob. Edited September 18, 2022 by odessasteps 3 1
Execproducer Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 I actually forgot it myself and I used to love that video.
odessasteps Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 There’s used to be a “most experimental video” category for the first couple years of the MTV awards. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTV_Video_Music_Award_for_Most_Experimental_Video i didnt remember some of these, like Boy in the Bubble from Graceland or Rough Boy by ZZ Top. This I did remember
Execproducer Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 (edited) I'm going to cheat and post this because (1) Reagan was a living cartoon (2) this is a pro wrestling board and (3) when else am I going to have the chance to give props to the greatest video of the 80's? Edited September 18, 2022 by Execproducer 2
odessasteps Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 (edited) Then I’d add this, since its full of stop motion AND two luchadors wearig suits fighting. Edited September 18, 2022 by odessasteps 1
Execproducer Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 And the second greatest video of the 80's. 2

This I did remember I thought my old man memory was bad. Boy in the Bubble by Paul Simon is arguably more relevant today than the day it was written. 2
odessasteps Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 I remember the song, just not the video. “every generation sends a hero up the pop charts” 1
Pete Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 UB40 (I think) did a video back in the 80s with the entire band done up as puppets. I can find neither hide nor hair of it and it's driving me batty.
