I remember those shows got some play in one of the Napolitano mags at the time and those six mans seemed like the kookiest matches of all time to me at age 11.

I would guess the Gunns were originally scheduled to win the tourney and Billy's injury made them unable to compete, so the Gunns winning the next night just returned to the status quo. Just a theory but maybe losing to Smoking Gunns in a regular tag title match at Royal Rumble wasn't considered a big enough reason for Bigelow to feel "embarrassed" and snap after be mocked by LT afterward, whereas losing the finals of a tournament to a wimpy underdog team was. Just a thought.

A lot of Nitro on the Network recently. God I miss the Horsemen. Nothing more fun or nostalgic or appealing to me when I was a teenager growing up in NC than the 98 Horsemen. Just watched King of Trios Night 1 and absolutely loved Kingston/Ophidian/Shynron vs. Hallowicked/Frightmare/Silver Ant. SO much subtlety and story telling nuances all happening in a super fun match. Also really liked AAA vs. Gentleman's Club. Eager for the rough cuts of nights 2 and 3 to go up.

This is really the truth. Granted, Unforgiven '98 was a PPV and not a house show, but it totally had that feel that WWF had taken over Greensboro - Sunny & LOD 2000 were signing at a video store, Shamrock/Blackman/Faarooq were signing at a Wendy's down the road from the Coliseum, Rock was somewhere too and all the signings were packed.

Awesome article, thanks! I remember the Graham/Muraco substitution, as well as the bad pre-Photoshop edit to the event marketing materials. Not included in the article, presumably because they were never photographed together, are the original '88 babyface teams: Warrior's original team was himself, Beefcake, Blue Blazer, Sam Houston and Don Muraco. Roberts original team was himself, Duggan, Ken Patera, Tito Santana and JYD. Muraco and JYD both leave the territory in the fall and are replaced by the Killer Bees, with Jim Brunzell on Warrior's team and Brian Blair on Roberts' team. Seeing how they not only did they not make the cut for the 10 tag-team elimination match but were reduced to fill-in substitutions, Blair sees the writing on the wall that the Killer Bees run is over and gives his notice, effectively ending the team and is ultimately replaced on Roberts' team by Scott Casey.

Regal's dream team from last year still beats anything I've seen anyone else come up with.

Completely agree. I LOVE this show. They do a marvelous job of making Hercules SEEM credible as a challenger, with even Hogan questioning if he can beat him. Roberts-Savage is tremendous fun, 86 Piper is pure God status and while not mentioned here you also get Don Muraco and Mr. Fuji singing "Dixie" before Muraco's match vs. Dick Slater.
