NFL 2024 - WEEK ONE

My thoughts on Week 1

I don't know if the league is full of horrific quarterbacks or that having four of the top ten quarterbacks playing on Thursday and Friday made the quarterback play on Sunday seem way worse.  On Friday, I thought that Jalen Hurts looked pretty bad in spots, but I think he played head and shoulders better than the majority of quarterbacks who played on Sunday.

My bottom 5 quarterbacks from Week 1 (excluding rookies):

  1. Deshaun Watson.  He's awful in a way that is hard to explain.  He's so bad that you can't judge whether or not anyone else on the offense is good.  He was sacked six times, but I don't think that means that the offensive line is bad.  He just panics and runs out of clean pockets.  I don't know if Jerome Ford is bad, because there is absolutely no reason to not stack the box when Watson is the one passing the ball.  I don't know if the coaching is bad, but having Deshaun Watson pass 45 times points strongly to the affirmative.  The defense was actually good yesterday, they only gave up 265 total yards, but since they offense couldn't move the ball at all they gave up 33 points.  He's trash, and actively makes the good players on the team worse.
  2. Daniel Jones.  Deshaun Watson is worse than Daniel Jones.  With that said, since Daniel Jones signed his contract extension, he's thrown more touchdowns to his opponents than he has to the Giants.  That is worse than Deshaun Watson, but I would still rather have Daniel Jones than Deshaun Watson.  At the very least, he's not a known pervert.  If you are going to suck, you can't be a pervert, I stand by that.
  3. Bryce Young may be a lost cause.  I don't think I've seen a single play that made me think he has potential to be successful.  He's the opposite of Justin Fields.  Justin Field has been bad, but almost every game he does something that makes you believe he has a future.  Young is bad in a way that makes you believe less and less every play you watch.  At least he's not a pervert.
  4. Will Levis.  Will Levis plays like he's playing Madden and can turn the game off when bad things happen.  That pick-six he threw is one of the worst decisions I've ever seen in an NFL game.  There was also a designed run where he picked up a good gain, and then got ragdolled to the ground in a way that you never see quarterbacks get hit.  He's reckless in a Jameis Winston type of way, but Jameis was a generational prospect who plays like someone who never had any reason to doubt his ability...Will Levis doesn't have any real reason to believe he can do any of the things he's trying to do.  I don't think putting mayonnaise in coffee makes you a pervert, but he's pushing the limits.
  5. Kirk Cousins.  I don't think there is a better example of stats lie than the career of Kirk Cousins.  I feel like a lot of people are going to point at this game as some sort of anomaly, a sign of his decline, or a side effect of his Achilles injury...but this is who he's always been.  Kirk is 16-47 against wining teams in his career.  If the team is good, he is bad.  Don't get me wrong, he could be completely washed and incapable of playing well at this point, but this is the exact kind of game he's had repeatedly over the course of his career.  The only difference, this was a 1:00 kickoff, where he's usually at his best.  He's been around long enough to say, well at least he's not a pervert.

I can't promise that Anthony Richardson won't end up on this list at some point, but he is absurdly talented.  It's going to be ugly from time to time, but he's one throw away from a touchdown at all times.  That 60 yarder where he almost slipped and fell is one of the most incredible throws I've ever seen.  You aren't supposed to be able to do that.

I know I brought up Bryce Young and Daniel Jones already, but the rest of the Panthers and Giants might have been even worse.  Their defenses made Derek Carr and Sam Darnold look like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.  I know it's only been one game, but they might want to start looking at their roster and seeing if they have any pieces they can trade for draft capital.

I honestly do not know how any team without Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or Josh Allen beats a team with Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or Josh Allen.  They're just plain better than everyone else at this point.  There are other quarterbacks who are on the fringe of their level, but they're either too young like C.J. Stroud, or coming off injury like Joe Burrow.  Until they show me they're ready to get to that level, I have no confidence that any other team has a legitimate championship chance.

The NFC doesn't have a quarterback that would be a top 5 quarterback in the AFC, but they may have the next 5.  Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts, Brock Purdy, Dak Prescott, and Matthew Stafford are the exact quarterbacks you would want if the quarterback pay scale actually reflected how good they are.  That isn't how the world works, so I can't in good conscience pick any NFC team over any of the above AFC teams.  All of them are good enough to win you a game or two because you have them, but all of them might fuck around and lose you a game from time to time.

Whew supreme it was just week 1 and I think many things will come out in the wash. Meanwhile it’s possible that we haven’t even seen the worst quarterback yet. I’m a huge Brock fan but nobody never has a bad game and he hasn’t had one yet. I do remember his 4 INT game but the Ravens beat them all up and down the field that night and there were tipped balls and everything. Then there’s Aaron Rodgers. Talk about stats lie and stinking it up in big games.

I don’t think that’s how it will go for either of them tonight but I don’t have any information why. I predicted earlier that the Jets would roll to 1-0…….and 6-11. While the 49ers rolled to 0-1 and 11-6. Idk…

Mason should still get 120 running behind Trent with nary a hiccup.  But Shanahan and getting a wild hair up his nose go together like peanut butter and jelly...

They’re playing like they haven’t even considered the possibility of losing, besides a couple of miscues early. They’re calling basic plays and controlling the LoS. Whenever there is  pressure Purdy reacts to it like prime Joe Montana. Now they just picked off Rodgers, which is their 2nd big defensive play in very few chances.

I'll give 'em credit - Buck and Aikman were in mid-season form blaming wide receivers for every mistake from Rodgers.  The pick he threw was absolutely Rodgers' fault, throwing it too inside.  The one early on where he threw a deep ball and was upset with the receiver for "stopping his route" was a misread by Rodgers.  The receiver correctly read that the DB was over the top and that the right move was to stop short and break outside.  And so on.  It's amazing - it's like they can't even conceive that Rodgers might ever throw an inaccurate pass, make the wrong read, hold the ball too long, etc.

Didn't matter though - San Francisco was never even remotely in trouble even when trailing.

Honestly - we are at the point if you said Trent Williams was the greatest LT ever, you aren't gonna get an argument from me

Considering some of the Hall of Famers who played that position, that is quite the accomplishment:

Art Shell

Gary Zimmerman

Joe Thomas

Willie Roaf

Anthony Munoz

Walter Jones

Orlando Pace

Rosey Brown

Jonathan Ogden

Jason Peters is probably the next LT to get the call.
