As great a game as this has been, I think the only chance Wisconsin or Penn State had of getting a #4 seed with to blow the doors off their opponent.  A close game does them no favors.

You have no idea how much I'm rooting for the Hokies right now.

I'd like the NCAA just reorganize the conferences: have 7 conferences of 10, and allow ND+ the Service Academies to be independent, with a guarantee in if they're top 8 and best independent, otherwise that spot goes to best non-conference champion, and an 8team playoff:

The conferences would be rejiggered to bring back old rivalries, Maryland would go back to the ACC, Missouri to the Big 8, etc.

Utah and BYU get thrown into the old Big 8 to bring it to 10

the SWC would return

A lot of the old Big East schools would be back in a conference, alongside some misfits like South Carolina

No more conf championships. 1st round of playoffs would be 1st weekend of Dec.  Semifinals would be NYD, Final would be first Monday after 1/7.

Everyone else goes to FBS:

8 teams in this scenario would still matter because the conf championships would be the only guaranteed way in outside of the wild-card spot, and even there a Navy or a Notre Dame sneaking into the top 8 could mean no wild card.

IF you're doing that. then it'd be easier to just do the opposite:

Pick the top 8 programs/biggest FCS schools to get up to 128 teams.

Reorganize everyone into 8 16-team conferences (and everyone- Service Academies, Notre Dame, everyone).

8-team tournament, only conference champions need apply (but with conference title games, it's "really" a 16-team tournament with the conference title games as the first round games.).

Anybody else almost throw up when Gus Johnson called the Penn State win "a milestone in the healing process"?

Um, for who?

21 combined points separate the Badgers from potentially being 13-0. Argh. We'd probably still lose by 50 to Bama.

Penn State theoretically has an argument to get in, but if they start going down the "they beat Ohio State" path, it leads to thorns. I highly doubt much changes. Washington might jump Clemson.

If you are sick to your stomach about rape truthers/apologists who think THEY and their fucking football team are victims celebrating think of this: Temple won it's first ever major conference title today. They were the opponent when Ped State honored that vile jellyfish of a man. The Temple fans responded to this sickening scene by turning their backs on it and jeering. So as sick as you may feel also be glad that good things can still happen to good people. Go Owls!!!

This is one of those years a tournament isn't necessary. I mean of course they can't just cancel it one year and I like the tournament, but Alabama is just going to crush everyone anyway.

There's too many top-flight football schools right now period, and it's gonna get worse as the youth levels continue to dry up.

Cutting down the number of programs will keep the sport alive longer by increasing quality.

74 is a decent number.  It will suck for the Boise States and East Carolinas of the world, but FBS still exists.

They can throw influence and money around, that's about it. If this CBS Sports prediction comes true, it will be Western Michigan vs Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl. I'll take it.
