Grand Theft Auto V Talk.

It's astonishing how much different my 720p TV is compared to my 1080p TV. I can't read anything on my 720p TV. Everything is so small and kinda blurred. I had the same issues with playing DOTA 2. I also should note that the 720p set is a 32" screen while the 1080p set is a 40" screen. If I came across a 1080p 32" screen TV, do you think that would help?

In addition, I really, really, really suck at deathmatches. I can unload a clip into someone and they won't die, but I'm being executed after taking a couple shots. I'm also having trouble with aiming at enemies. It feels like it takes forever to get my targeting dot/reticle on an enemy. Anyone have any tips for playing deathmatch or just killing idiots in free mode so I'm not such a tackling dummy?

It might be best to stick to missions, races, etc for a bit till you've leveled up a bit.  Most people will be a higher level than you for now, and will have weapons and health advantages.  Also, their shooting skills will be ranked up.  Survivals are a good place to improve your shooting skills.  Your health will improve about every 20 levels.  If you're on with some of us, we can get you through some of the higher level missions that will level you up in a hurry, and provide good payouts as well.

Buy the special carbine and/or bullpup rifle if you haven't already.

For DMs, you may want to stick to locked weapons matches till you can buy better ones.

You can shift the auto aim slightly upwards with the thumbstick to go for headshots.  It takes a bit of practice, but It's helpful once you get used to it.  Also, wearing a helmet provides a bit of protection from headshots.

What Stout and JT said - learn the Mary Lou (combat roll) now.  It's press X with the left trigger held down.  I pretty much run around with the left trigger held down at all times.  It's become such a habit I find myself doing it in solo rooms with nothing going on.

Freemode's a little more open-ended. If you're around a bunch of dots, you can catch one person obsessing over another and snipe them while they have their back turned. This happens very occasionally in deathmatches, because usually deathmatches are much smaller fields of battle. I find it generally easier to be successful in Freemode than in Deathmatches because it seems like people do stupider shit in Freemode more regularly.

This is all so true.

I hated deathmatches (and to a lesser extent public freerooms) until I hit level 90 because I was so outmatched by everyone's skills.  Once I got the heavy sniper, learned how to Mary Lou and spent a few hours messing around in a private room shooting NPC's to get the hang of aiming, the game has totally changed.

Another little trick that helped me when I was at earlier levels was leveling up my strength all the way by playing a ton of golf.  That at least helped with things like climbing ladders quickly and having better luck in the melee kill situations I would get into.

But really you just have to take your lumps.  Playing with all the crew members, seeing what they do and *ahem* borrowing their tactics works really well to improve your skills.

We need to ratchet up our teamwork a little when we're in free mode, guys.  I've noticed that we have a tendency to stray too far from each other without calling out position and sometimes end up getting cut off and shot full of holes.

I do not excuse myself from this as I also wander off and sometimes go AFK during one of my girlfriend's infamous phone calls and I neglect to tell anyone.  Then I return to gameplay only to discover to my horror that Robert or Jstout got perished because I did not provide suppressing fire.

We've had a couple of off nights lately because I think we've strayed from the basics.  Once we realign, we'll be back to terrorizing the public in no time.

I'm really bad about wandering off.  It doesn't help that spawns seem to have been moved further away from your last spot lately.

I ended the night up against most folks, though Specialist kicked my ass.  Finally got to utilize the grenade launcher trick melraz showed me a while back (bank shot off a building to get somebody taking cover between a building and a low wall.)  Got two kills that way, which was nice.

It was one of those nights where if one of those guys sent me a taunting "you suck" message, I would've responded "yes, sir, you have a point." The roof guy and his two buddies were in the same crew, too, which is disappointing. His two buddies, including the guy in the Turismo, weren't such a big deal, but that guy on the roof was instant death. Fucker even knifed me in Freemode. I had to check to see if Dan had an alternate character.

There were a couple times last night when I would've done the same, had I got one of those messages.

I really don't know if better tactics would've helped last night. We were absolutely Team Nail last night. It really was just one of those nights up and down the line.

It was frustrating all around.

There were a couple of times where I got lit up simply for not paying attention to when Robert went passive EVEN WHEN HE SAID MULTIPLE TIMES "I AM GOING TO FEED MY DOGS" OVER GAME CHAT~!  That's my own damn fault.

Then ther were other times when I would set up shop only to find you guys were like nine neighborhoods away. Warn a brotha when you are going to move! :)

The crew that held the mall position were equal parts coordinated and cheating. That Specialist asshole was definitely using a lag switch because he had ridiculous speed and agility, but he knew how to cover his boys.  They were no further than one city block away from each other at all times.

We definitely could've been better coordinated attacking the mall.  Dude can't target all of us at once.  The rest of us could've had sniper sights on him while one guy made his move.  I kept getting distracted by other dots and wound up chasing them all over the map instead of staying on target.  Specialist didn't need his buddies.  He came back out later by himself and killed the everybody.  I finally put his skills to use by taking cover under him and racking up easy kills on people that were distracted by him.

Or there was a couple of times when me and Mis were beating up on one dude and MIs was totally handling him, so I was unnecessary. Meanwhile, Robert's in a scrum with about 7 red dots, so I decided to go help him by offering them another target to shoot repeatedly.

I gotta get better about at least warning y'all I'm gonna go do that.  At least give heads up.  Something like "Hey guys, you know those 5 read dots bunched up at the expensive apartment.  I'm gonna drive this sticky bomb rigged car right into all their POVs and piss em all off."  That's what triggered that one big firefight.

My K/D ratio has definitely improved since I switched from mainly DMs to freemode murdering.  If you're gonna stick with DMs, matches with a lot of players are easier on the K/D.  Matches with 3 or 4 people are more often (though certainly not always) hardcore DM guys.  Big team matches will have their share of witless idiots who will be happy to run right into your sights.

I got so mad last night I actually spiked my controller.  The guy who I was up about 20 kills on became superman somehow and I was repeatedly spawn trapped at the bottom of this hill.  He killed me something like seven straight times.  If I was lucky, I killed him at the same time, but on spawn he'd be at the top in the same place, and i'd be at the bottom in his sights.

The Specialist, was a special kind of asshole.  If you somehow got better position on him he'd go into passive until he regained position, or you were preoccupied with someone else.  He liked being invisible too.  I did find his accuracy at range with the mini gun while I was under cover a bit peculiar.  He also quickscoped me once and I was very far away, and had moved to another vantage point.

Ill have to agree with JT, we've been a bit off the last couple of nights.   Like we're two or three steps behind everyone else.

I was the one who wandered into that last scrum first. I was like "hey, there's seven dots up there, I'm gonna go say hi." (Arrive on scene) "HOLY SHIT, THEY KEEP KILLING ME! RUN!"

When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir jstout turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.

You know, if we had wanted to be pricks, we could've all marched up the Mall roof in passive, then came out and shot the Specialist. That roof area is HYOOOGE, and there's no way he could've defended against five of us. But I fuckin' hate that tactic when other people do it, and I'm glad we didn't.

Sometimes we're hamstrung by our morals, and sometimes we kill hookers for easy cash.

This.

We were kicking ass during the early part of the evening where assholes were so focused on collecting the piddly $1K bounty on my head that they did notice the rest of you murdering the shit out of them.

I was like, "Do these guys not realize that all of the dots on the mall roof belong to the same crew?"

Things didn't drift south until after I panic fired an RPG to defend against that Spidermonkey douchebag trying to decapitate me with the heli blades, died blowing him up along with me, spawned on the ground, and got killed by his crew mates who were already on the ground in the ambulance.

And this.

We freely go all Shield / Four Horsemen on people and exploit the numbers game but we never cheat or break the game.  I don't think we grab tanks as often as we probably should.

We're pretty honorable for a bunch of murdering bastards.

Forgot to mention, you can hide your blip in DMs by either going into cover or pressing down the left thumbstick.  Very useful.  Shooting gives your position away, though I think having silenced weapons helps with that.  Doesn't work in freemode though.

This may be the most useful piece of advice.  You'll get a feel for what works and what doesn't, and what you can expect from other players.  The lumps happen to everybody, especially if your opponent is competent with the heavy sniper.

Well, it's certainly not as lucrative as in GTA.

Yep.  Silenced and melee weapons and thrown explosives do not give away your position in DM's but your blip is always visible when you are in free mode.

One of the perks you can earn is to have Lester Crest hide your position on the map.  He can "turn off your dot" for one minute of real time (an hour in game time) for a small fee.  This works in free mode and in deathmatches, although most people frown upon using perks in deathmatches.

We will be back to form in no time.  I knew it was a bad sign when my favorable rep went up by three percent.

And what are good ways to level up quickly? I'd like to play in more DMs or Races, but each seems to take forever to start. Especially races and that's something I feel I'm good at since I really love the Midnight Club-ish driving and was quite good at that.

I did not know that, Robert. Maybe that's why so many people (cough, Dan, cough, cough) sneak up on me and filet me with a knife or bottle or jam a billy club up my butthole.

That would be how he does it, yes.  You can sort of jog that way by holding down the sprint button.  Can't do a full out button mashing sprint though.  I think you also have to climb stairs slowly, though I'm not sure there.

Missions are probably the best.  You can join random missions from the phone.  Some of them will give you 3K-4K RP.

I didn't know that about the weapons.  I just assumed the silencer reduced the detection range.  I didn't know it eliminated it completely.  Useful, that.

Races will provide lots and lots of rank, but you also have to think about your skills.  If you spend all of your time racing, your shooting and piloting skills will suffer along with your physical attributes like Strength and Stamina.

Just like in story mode, you will have to get into a firefight or two to improve shooting, swim / run / bicycle to improve stamina, play sports to max out your strength, and spend some time in a helicopter or an airplane to get your pilot skills squared away.

I am not sure, but I think that the act of reloading still makes enough noise to put your blip up on the map.

We might have to experiment with that in a crew DM, just to find out.
