I feel that way about used book / comic stores. however, I was in Best Buy earlier and it was like walking through a maze with all the dumps and giant stacks of TVs everywhere.
nate
My adventures in watching B-movie TV have me wanting to start a Roku-based channel that me and family and a close circle of friends can access, and all it is, is the uploads of movies from my physical collection. If I even knew how to begin that project and started it today, I'd never finish it in my lifetime though.
jaedmc
Chicago has a ton of pawn shop and used video places. Most suck. Reckless Records isn't bad, though you do end up paying 20+ bucks for used Criterion, which isn't terrible, except most of the Criterions they get in are either obvious ones like 8 1/2 or the Wes Anderson movies, OR it's the old dvd version of a movie that isn't formated for widescreen TVs. But it is incredibly zen to just browse the records and the discs. However we do have a couple of GREAT video stores that stock up on crazy shit you can't find anywhere else for sale or otherwise. Facets and Odd Obssession are must visits if any of you are ever in town and want a little throwback experience to the good ol' days. 4 hours ago, Curt McGirt said: Welcome to my world. Amazon raped my wallet after sending me two wrong vinyls in a row before finally getting it right because I refused to send them back. These big retailers are for the birds; best to keep it indie. If I could bottle the rage in my conversations with those poor motherfuckers on the other end of the line I could probably sell it as a drug I just wanted to say that because of you mentioning indie, I looked up DeepDiscount.com, which I've never used, but have always heard good things about. They had the movies I wanted at a price between Barnes and Noble and Amazon, Amazon being the highest. HOWEVER. Deep Discount let me use their cyber monday site wide coupon(Barnes and Noble, over the last year has phased out using coupons on discounted DVD's like during the Criterion sale). So I actually saved 5 bucks from what I would have paid to Barnes and Noble. And the funniest part of it all was that I used Paypal and it went off without a hitch. So thanks.

B&N's one suggestion on the matter was to clear my cache and try another browser. To which I said: How did you originally sign up to paypal? mine is connected to my bank account and i recently had to change a bunch of shit. maybe you just need to reauthorize your account? I had a problem last year where paypal was showing i'd made duplicate orders and trying to get help from paypal & BN was pointless.
Curt McGirt
Huh, never heard of Deep Discount, I'll check it out. And Reckless rules. I had no idea they had DVDs because anytime I'm there that is not the mission at hand. BTW, they do great mail order too. I'll also try and get to those video stores if I ever get a chance but again, when I'm in town there are usually other priorities.

It was like 15 years ago, when they'd make two deposits in your checking and you'd have to tell them how much it was. I don't even know if they do that any more. Everything on my account has been verified. There's a back up bank account and bank card. I use paypal all the time selling on ebay, and have even purchased off of B&N in two-three years using it. It's really bizarre. Paypal said they could see where B7N was requesting the funds, and where it was being rejected, but they couldn't see any reason for it to be rejected. So it's a mystery that'll never be solved. I'm just glad it's done. I'm never going back. I'll save my money for the Criterion.com Flash sales. My wife is cancelling her membership. Barnes and Noble can eat dick.
Curt McGirt
Ah, I just remembered this: I bought a copy of Doggystyle from B&N and it skipped (right through "What's My Name" which is just unacceptable). So, I returned it for another copy... and it skipped too, just in a different spot. After that I just gave up and kept it.
nate
Okay, re: Deep Discount ... I fucking LOVE Deep Discount. I've used them for years and years. Hell, maybe nearing 20 yrs with them. They used to have these awesome af sales where everything site-wide would go for 25% off already discounted prices. They stopped that, now instead they do a monthly 15% off entire order coupon that just springs up out of the blue and is good for one day only. But, they do some amazing sales on DVD/Blu labels (Olive, Kino) every now and then, as well as themed sales. They used to offer free shipping w/ no order limit, but eventually moved to the $25 minimum order (when Amazon went to $50 for media purchases, but then Amazon moved their needle back). I've had maybe one order hiccup out of hundreds of orders, but even then I can't remember it and am just assuming that I must've had one in all these years. Ymmv, as a few of the posters on DVD Talk's shopping forum do have many a bitch & complain session about DD, but again, I haven't had any bad experiences to ward me off as a shopper. jaedmc
Yeah got my Deep Discount order without a hitch, so now I have all of the original Yakuza Papers flicks. There's something terribly satisfying about completing a series. Emphasis on terrible. Isn't @Brian Fowlerthe big Behind The Mask mark on the board? Brian Fowler
Kickstarter failed. Current hope is this new edition sells well enough to get someone to fund the sprequel.

Curt McGirt
You gotta love them sneaking Clash of the Titans and THE GOONIES onto the list. So cool. jaedmc
I think I'd be double dipping on like 20 of those movies, and the movies I do want from that list I'd rather just get individually. Also it has the deadly combo of Shawshank/Driving Miss Daisy/The Blindside and I've got fucking limits to what I'll allow on my shelf.

jaedmc
Criterion announced their March titles and it's including an upgrade to Joan of Arc. The list also includes a movie adaptation of Baal, which I've never seen, but my work is hugely influenced by Brecht, so I might get it sight unseen. https://www.criterion.com/films/29060-baal
