XCOM: The Long War - DVDVR SAVES THE WORLD!!!!

First terror mission. First mission with Chrystallids. Most stressful one yet. There were many restarts, admittedly. Craig H kept biting it, and as my best Assault, that just would not do. But in the end, the only lasting casualty was a SHIV.

We saved 11 out of 18 civilians.

LCPL cool arrow - 4 kills

LCPL the Natural - Promoted to Corporal - Earned HEAT Ammo ability - Assigned nickname: "Casino" - 5 kills

SHIV THUNDER-1 - Destroyed - 1 kill

SPEC Bill Watts is my Co-Pilot - Promoted to Lance Corporal - Earned Holo-Targeting ability - 3 kills

LCPL El Dragon - 9 kills

SPEC BL88 - Wounded 26 days - Promoted to Lance Corporal - Earned Will to Survive ability - 4 kills

CPL Craig "Vandal" H - 11 kills

SPEC Victator - Promoted to Lance Corporal - Earned Covering Fire ability - 1 kill

Fresh, do you play this with the thing that makes soldiers start with unique stats. Cause that always makes play thought more fun.

Working on a play through now where I just did the Alien Base 6 months in. By then, I had 6 Titan armors, with 3 of all Plasma Rifles, Snipers, and Heavys with 6 Plasma Pistols. I went through a Terror mission against some big bads recently and survived an saved 15 out of 18.

Also, got arguably the best draw on a character ever. 6 missions. 26 kills. Promotion each mission. Will and Aim right around 110. Just destroying the world right now.

I'm using the same mods Fresh is, which is The Long War, and Easy War (Takes The Long War mod and tweaks the difficulty down a notch or two so its not a nightmare).  I'm also using Long War VR Traning Mod, which basically just gives some XP to lower ranked squadies up to a certian rank, dependant on what the highest rank solider you have is.  

 

I've somehow managed to breeze through Two terror attacks with only getting the Phalinx armor upgrades, but I've really lucked out in that the Chrislyds end up bunching up allowing me to swarm them before they get too many zombies moving.  That and I've been really damn prudent on what upgrades I give to who, what they do, and that I space out properly for each squad.  Not splitting my squad up (keeping them all in weapon range of each other) saves my ass big time in terror attacks and missions where Seekers pop up.

 

I got Lasers cooking now, but that's only because I need it for the tec tree.  Plasma's comin' ASAP.

Nope. I do a bad job of paying attention to my soldier's stats as much as I pay attention to their abilities and gear.

Which version of Long War are you using? I saw on the Easy War mod that it was made for version 3 of Long War, so I didn't get the most updated version. I wish I had though. There are lots of other mods I wish I had also used like VR Training, Randomize Soldier appearances, and more nicknames.

Using B15d2 for Long War, with the current Easy Long War up on NexusMods that is the blanket one for Vanilla 3 Long War 15.  If you search Long War on NexusMods, you can find all the compatible mods.  There's a B15e that cleans up a ton of stuff I want to look at, but I'm not 100% sure I can upgrade and it not screw up my current saves, which I'm too far into to restart.

 

 

BTW- If you're dying that much, you're doing something wrong somewhere.  Long War is made to have strategic retreats possible, so if you know you're getting your ass kicked, bail the fuck out (return everyone you can to the LZ) and bail, live to fight another day.  The penalities in Long War aren't anywhere close to as bad as vanillia.

 

 

EDIT: I forgot, I also have Second Wave options ticked, namely Cinematic Mode (ups Accuracy a percent or two), Aiming Anbles (Aim bonus with flanking), Absolutly Criticle (100% crit on flanking shots), and Save Scum, which is the best option available, because it forces rerolls if you reload during a mission (Seriously, it makes it so that you no longer always get the same result doing the same action if you reload.)

Promotions through Officer Training School to Lieutenants!!!

All of these men receive "Lead By Example" ability (Substitutes his or her Will for that of all nearby lower-Will squad mates) plus one other which varies on the officer. The downside is that they can never be made into MEC troops or made into a Psionic.

Let me tell you how damn valuable "Lead by Example" and "Stay Frosty" are in that goddamn tanker scouting mission...

Reducing panic by any means is fucking vital.  I ended up sacrificing 2 SHIV's to buy time for the 3 surviving squaddies to escape.  I shudder to think about having to play the noble sacrifice card if I hadn't been low on available soliders and didn't have the SHIV's around.  I'm so upgrading those bad boys to Alloy SHIV's so they become moving, shooting, cover.

UFO Landing in USA. I'm doing research, but it takes forever, so I don't have much researched yet.

I wish there was a way to play with Enemy Within rules, but add the classes, skill trees, and equipment from Long War.

You can go into the .ini files and change the timings on build and research. The downside is that it greatly unbalances the game in your favor, since the Aliens have similar tech tree build times to you. I'm not sure what exactly to change, but I'd you poke around the nexusmod forums, it's all there.
