A citation included with Ms. Young’s entry into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame quotes an article from The Daily Mail of Charleston, W.Va, on July 22, 1941, about a match Ms. Young wrestled the night before.

 

“Mae Young, 18-year-old wrestler, headed for Atlantic City Tuesday to fill a mat engagement with boos still ringing in her ears following her Armory match with Ann LaVerne Monday night in the semifinal of the American Legion bill,” the article said. “After Miss LaVerne, 20-year-old Croatian girl with a cauliflower ear, had annexed the opening fall in 7:24, her 180-pound opponent ran amok. Miss Young choked Miss LaVerne to win the second fall in 6:03 and got so unmanageable in the third, she was disqualified by referee Laverne Stokes in 2:46.”

 

Outstanding.

I like the story Jericho told in his first book about the first time he met ol' Johnnie Mae. I know i'm butchering the story but somebody will correct me but, Jericho was working for some indie promotion in  SoCal around 92ish that had a program on an local access channel. Jericho, I believe was visiting his father and found himself in the channels television studio one weekend morning wrestling a then 68 year old Mae Young how if I'm remembering right punched a young Chris in the face and told him to dive outside of the ring onto her standing on the floor.   

 

 

Can someone elaborate on this? These are the kind of stories that need to be known.

 

Jericho told the story on his latest podcast: it was 1992, in Hayward, California for a local independant outfit that had limited national exposure, Jericho wrestled three matches at the show. His Second match was against a man named the Spanish Assassin, who was managed by Johnnie Mae Young. Jericho saw this on the booking card and immediantly thought the manager was a guy then he saw a 70 year old Mae. Jericho didnt know what to think, so after the match Mae and Assassin are beating up Jericho in the middle of the ring and Johnnie Mae is really kicking the crap out of him crackling and Jericho was afraid of her for years.
