Pool A chaos! Cuba and Italy are in after Italy beats the Netherlands.

Japan finished 4 - 0. Ohtani finally hit one out of the park and the pop in the Tokyo Dome...

And then there's this.

If this is the US, that poor fan is never seeing the ball again. 😂

the Canada/GB game is also fun because of Buck Martinez on color commentary. Some people on the Baseball subreddit apparently don't watch as many MLB Network relayed Blue Jays games as I did.

Considering the pace of this game, maybe it's for the best that Mexico/USA is starting at 7pm Arizona time (10pm Eastern). Ariel Helwani was complaining about the start time of USA/GB last night, just imagine the complaints for this one (granted, LigaMX has some late start times too, so this really isn't new for some fans in the USA/Mexico game)

Yeah Canada winning by mercy rule is gonna help everyone forget that two of their pitchers pitched like shit

I will also mention that one of the Yankees few healthy bullpen arms - Jonathan Loaisiga - blew a lead for Nicaragua as Israel scored 3 in the 8th to take that game.

Gonna be a long season...

Two neat stories coming out of the WBC:

1) The Tigers signed a 21 year old Nicaraguan pitcher to a minor league contract after one inning pitched where he struck out a couple major leaguers. Apparently he so impressed them that after the game they offered him the contract on the spot, which he apparently signed) https://www.mlb.com/news/duque-hebbert-signs-with-tigers-after-dominant-world-baseball-classic-inning

2) A Japanese Phenom showed some class after hitting a Czech Republic player with a 101 mph fast ball, tipping his cap to him (as is the Japanese way of apologizing), and bringing him a gift of a couple bags of Japanese candy. My thought was that if Barry Bonds played in Japan, he'd actually have 250 LESS homers, because he'd weighed 250 more pounds after all the candy he'd been given. He'd be Barry Bondszuna. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2023/03/13/wbc-roki-sasaki-willie-escala-candy-hbp-japan-czech-republic/11464636002/

Rōki Sasaki is said Japanese phenom. He pitched that insane 19-strikeout perfect game last season and followed with eight more perfect innings in his next start before getting pulled, for a total of 52 (FIFTY-TWO) consecutive retired batters.

He's 21.

Barring something truly apocalyptic, it's only a question of when some MLB team pulls up with an 18-wheeler full of money for him.

They’ll play the winner of Venezuela vs the Pool C runnerup

So there’s no shortage of Venezuelan or Colombian fans in Miami-Dade who will have less of a social taboo about rooting for their national team than Cuban-Americans.

there are some tournament organizers who would do unnatural things to get USA/Cuba and Dominican/Japan as the semifinal matchups in Miami.

Some teams have really gelled as this tournament has went on. The Cuban team went from seeming to be a mess to the semifinals. Even a team like Britain that won’t advance improved as the tournament went on.

Cuba’s team having MLB guys on it might be enough of a cover for any Cuban-American fans to say they’re not supporting the Cuban government by supporting the Cuban team. They don’t have to win over AM radio dudes who care what Marco Rubio has to say. There’s likely no shortage of fans who are Cuban-American and either born here or recently arrived (compared to people who got here in the 1960s).

Also the possibility of this being once in a lifetime (or twice in a lifetime if they make the finals) is gonna be persuasive.

Miami could get a really awesome 5 day run of games at Marlins (LoanDepot) park:

  • Venezuela vs Pool C runnerup (maybe USA/Venezuela?)
  • Pool C winner vs Pool D runnerup (could be Mexico or USA vs Dominican/Puerto Rico)
  • Cuba vs Venezuela/Pool C runnerup
  • Probably Japan vs Pool C winner/Pool D runnerup
  • And the finals.
