Craig H Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I liked Dungy more when he was just a dude coaching the Bucs and the Colts. 1
odessasteps Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I had someone on twitter read what i had written to someone else and respond with "What has dungy done that's homophobic (if you know what the word means)?"
Burgundy LaRue Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Sam was scheduled to have a reality show/video diary taped during training camp, to be aired on OWN. It was to take place during his off-time, granted, but it can definitely be seen as a distraction. Sam and his team nixed the show, though. Of course, AJ McCarron's new bride has a reality show coming, and while there's been some grumbling about that, it hasn't been to the level of Sam's proposed show. Dungy isn't the only NFL-related person to feel this way. He's just one of the few willing to admit it. Not that he should win a medal for that. In some twisted way, Dungy may have a point. I don't think anything is going to happen with Sam, because there's too much attention on the situation and I think Jeff Fisher is going to give him a fair chance to make the team. But the Martin-Incognito mess in Miami indicates that anyone who's deemed different will have a tough time of it in NFL locker rooms. And what happens to the next openly gay player who doesn't have as much media focus to keep the jerks in check? I hate the idea of someone using their religion as a crutch to ostracize others. But freedom of religion is allowed in this country. I just wish the so-called religious right would leave others alone--give those people a chance to live freely without their input.
Brian Fowler Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Dungy supporting Vick kills his taking point about distractions dead and you know it. He's a bigoted asshole, period. 1
Burgundy LaRue Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 As Niners pointed out, the level of distraction one is willing to deal with usually goes hand-in-hand with the level of talent someone has. Plus, Dungy envisions himself as a believer in redemption. I don't get Dungy's POV. IMO, he's very wrong. But I rather deal with someone like him--who tells you how they feel--than someone who will lie to save face, all while undermining you behind your back.
Kevin Wilson Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Although I obviously disagree with him, I will give him some credit for being honest. So many talking heads are saying "Sure, I'd take him!" when you know damn well they wouldn't have been interested. He should have emphasized the skill vs. distraction view more if that was his point. I mean if Jackie Robinson was hitting .230 would the Dodgers have been interested? No, he was an exceptional talent. If Sam had the skill set of Mack, then more teams would put up with the distraction to get someone highly skilled. Sam is a practice squad candidate, so I could see some coaches not wanting to put up with it. That being said, Dungy just opened up a can that I am shocked he wanted to open. Really he is the first note-worthy TV personality to take that stance, even though I am sure he isn't the first to think it. Probably won't end with him getting fired or something but I do bet a 'clarification' message will be coming shortly.
Burgundy LaRue Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 As someone said today: if Jadeveon Clowney was gay, do you really he'd drop out of the Top 10 because of it? I doubt he'd drop at all. If Dungy got fired, I'd be surprised. It's not like NBC doesn't know his opinion on homosexuality, he's been fairly vocal about it over the years. But I imagine he'll come back to do clean up.
muhammedboehm Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 To me part of what's funny is that most of the distraction is going to come from the sports media. Thus it becomes a self filling proficy 1
Josh Mann Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 HE is threatening that he wants to still play in the NFL and let his workouts be publicized. Yes, HIM. 1
Death From Above Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 It's awesome that I instantly knew who HE was.
glfpunk Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 People get pretty riled up about it that's for sure.
Newb82 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Dan Patrick is trying so hard to give his buddy Dungy the benefit of a doubt, but he clearly understands what Tony meant and why it's abhorrent.
