J.H.
Mile High skipping is kind of big news and their argument is sound. It used ot be SDCC (and cons in general) were about th dealer rooms and great deals while meeting all the people in the industry you could wan to meet. The shift away from that and how Mile High isn't a priority for SDCC is kind of legit. I mean aren't they the biggest vendor there comics wise? James Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, I would have said Mile High or Rory Root, for floor space. Prob followed by Harley Yee. I was amazed at how cheap a table was in 1973 ($40). Brian Fowler
It appears Jill Thompson went to San Diego to do two things: chew bubblegum and won Eisner's. And she was all out of bubblegum. (Saga also had a great showing)
odessasteps
I was happy with a lot of the wins (king, Lemire, bandette) but disappointed Glanzman did not win.
Brian Fowler
So, Scott Allie is leaving Dark Horse. On one hand, he pretty much edited every hit title they've had the last fifteen years. On the other, serial drunken harassment and assault... I'm not sure those incidents have stuck to him enough to prevent future employment.
odessasteps
I'd have to see what Diana edited when since 2001 to completely agreee. I think Jamie was at Oni by then too. I know Diana did Frank's stuff and Grendel and Usagi.
Brian Fowler
He's been doing Hellboy since it launched. Buffy, Conan, The Guild, Umbrella Academy, and a bunch of other stuff. I mean, probably a bit hyperbole, but not that far from true.
Brian Fowler
Francis Manapul's sister-in-law was missing since Saturday, found dead in Toronto Thursday. Police say it doesn't look suspicious, but just to make the timing even more horrible for her family and friends today would've been her 23rd birthday. Eivion
Something like that is always a terrible shame to hear. I feel sorry for the family.
The Unholy Dragon
Didn't know she was Manapul's sister-in-law, but had been following the story. She's actually one of about a dozen women and trans folks to go missing within a neighborhood in the last six months, with those that turned up all turning up dead. So I would maybe put a hold on it not looking suspicious. EDIT: Yeah, it's now being investigated as a homicide.
Brian Fowler
Yeah. The initial Toronto Sun article said not being treated as suspicious and then a few days later they were looking fur a suspect. Terrible either way, of course
The Unholy Dragon
It's a super mess, since after the cops searching for five days, her mom found her body on the street within five blocks of where she went missing which uh, isn't exactly inspiring a ton of confidence in Toronto Police when it comes to their investigative skills or level of concern into the issue. Anyway, everything about this situation is horrible but we should probably put a lid on it since it's only tangentially related to comics. (The Toronto Sun is uh, not a credible news source btw)

Brian Fowler
Chris Ryall is leaving IDW. He's been EIC for 14 years, basically since they started doing a full line of monthly original books. No word on who is replacing him, what he might do next, etc.

No word on who is replacing him, what he might do next, etc. (getting to this late because of dad in town) This seems insane. When I first started hearing about IDW circa Wormwood and 30 Days of Night, I honestly thought it was Ryall's company for a couple of years. I can't imagine what the company looks like without him, but I hope it's a good change for both. Meanwhile, I've seen several people on my Facebook feed share a Daily Beast article about Stan Lee called "Picked Apart by Vultures" purporting to describe financial irregularities popping up mostly since Joan died. I don't have a lot of faith in TDB and have only skimmed the article (a mix of sleaze and what might be legit reporting...so par for that site) and I don't even really want to share it, but it's out there and is likely to get commented on by comics-specific sources and straighter journalistic outfits. odessasteps
From what I understand, a lot of the Stan stuff centers around his son and daughter, and their respective interests in Stan’s legacy(financial and otherwise). but I’ve tried not reading any of those stories . Eivion
From what I've read over the past few weeks it seems people have been trying to split Stan up from everyone who has managed and taken care him the past decade or two. It seems to have started after his wife's death. A number of creators are worried because this also is coinciding with Stan currently being sick with pneumonia. The Unholy Dragon
Gerard Jones has flipped his kiddie porn charges to guilty and will apparently get a reduced sentence as he's been attending therapy for it. That said, reading the descriptions of what he got hit for and some stuff they can prove past that is genuinely horrifying and goes into that realm where I won't be mourning his death whenever it comes. I don't think too highly of the folks who wrote letters speaking to his good character either, Mike Barr being the one that sucks for me personally.
