UFC Fight Night 83: Cowboy vs. Cowboy (2/21/2016) - Pittsburgh, PA (Consol Energy Center)

Anyone know the Dilbert comic strip.  Anyone remember when that Cloud of Doom followed Dilbert around?  That cloud is now following Joe Riggs.

Maybe being a coach at MMA Lab full time would be better for his health. Something bad always seems to happen when he jumps in the cage, win or lose.

Anyway, Bermudez managed to outgrind Kawajiri. Still fights a bit reckless, but he fought a smarter fight tonight.

Really touching video package for Kevin Randleman. Very classy and well put together.

Is Kawajiri the most one dimensional fighter in the UFC?

I don't think it's him being one dimensional as it is people forcing him to fight outside his comfort zone. Fighting in Japan wasn't easy back in the heyday, but Kawajiri was one of those guys whose success relied so much on gameplan A, which seemed to work a lot of the time as he is a super strong top position grappler. Sometimes, he would figure out how to pound someone out or get an occasional submission. Now, he's facing people who can get up from the bottom and know how to scramble effectively. It's hard to improvise when you've been fighting that same way for a decade and a half.

I hear what you're saying, but if he can't get a takedown he has absolutely no chance at winning.  He's good at grappling from top position, and literally nothing else.  If his opponent can strike, he's done.  If his opponent can take him down, he's done.  He's really good at what he does, but he's legitimately bad at almost everything else.

To be fair to Kawajiri, he has won his fair share of nip and tuck fights over people who might be superior grapplers or strikers. The problem is now, with him fighting mostly top fighters, he can't afford to have those fights. Those fights that would have went to him on the card in Japan are not going to go in his favor in the U.S. or anywhere else. In addition, there aren't too many people who are going to allow him to do the old "takedown -> sit in half guard/guard for 80% of the round -> punch away" rinse and repeat. Like his teammate Mitsuhiro Ishida, he benefited so much from facing fighters who aren't as strong or didn't have sufficient enough takedown defense. He is more well rounded than Ishida, but he is facing the same obstacles against fighters who are as big or as strong.

I mean he fought a guy in Bermudez who is way better at that style than him. It just happens that Bermudez gets way too overconfident with his striking sometimes. However, Bermudez fought more in favor of his natural style and won tonight. If Kawajiri fought a Chad Mendes or Mirsad Bektic, he would have gotten the breaks beat off of him because those dudes can bring heat in addition to what Kawajiri brings to the table. So you don't even have to look for people who are markedly better strikers or submission grapplers than him. There are fighters on the roster who fight in a similar fashion and have way more going for them in their arsenal.

Cerrone is probably my favorite fighter on the planet, but he's simply not champion material.  The reason that is because he just can't mentally cross over that hump when he fights for the title and believes he can win.

Cerrone tends to excel in situations like tonight.

And wow, Derek Brunson is turning into quite the talent for middleweight.  Hope he gets a big night next.  He's definitely earned it.  He's a far cry from the guy who looked awful in his UFC debut against Chris Leben.

Well shit looks like I can't since there is no link to the fight pass prelims.

How were the two ladies fights?

Thanks!

Murphy looked good and Kelly will be interesting to see how she does in her 2nd fight with a full camp instead of on 8 days notice. Maybe when Moras gets healthy we will see that fight.

Reneau should have won her fight but you know how MMA judges are.

Cerrone usually picks up after a loss quite well, but we'll see.  He just can't put it together in title fights.

Yeah, he fought with quite the chip on his shoulder.

Someone is going to die in the ring when Mario is fucking reffing.

He would've been a fantastic ref for Pride.

Mario probably ain't even the worst referee in his family.

I recall reading on social media that UFC actually pulled his brother from refereeing on a Brazil card.  Not sure if that's true or if UFC had the authority to do that at the time, but that's what the media on press row were saying.
