  1. It sure sounds like the Nexus 5 will be a slightly modified version of the LG G2. If that's true, from what I'm reading about the G2, that's the phone I'll be getting. The reviews I've seen so far of the G2 have been great - awesome screen, screaming fast CPU/GPU, and so on. And the main complaint - LG's interface and some bloatware - won't be an issue if you're running vanilla Android. Curious to see if they can bring it in at a price ($399?) that's in-line with what we saw with previous Nexus phones as opposed to the current prices for LG G2s ($600).
  2. That's a good plan, one I might follow myself. I've got a system pre-ordered from Amazon but might decide to put it off for awhile, catch up more on my backlog, and pick up the current gen games I'm dying to play (Rocksmith 2014 being foremost).
  3. The Killzone games for the PS3 are great. If you like FPS's, you'll like the new one, I'm pretty sure. It'll be a great-looking game and lots of stuff will blow up. I think of the three you listed, I'd get Watch Dogs. That one seems to have the highest ceiling of awesomeness of the launch titles. I'm in the same boat as you - I'm probably getting a PS4 and I am undecided on which titles to get. I want AC4 but think I might wait for the inevitable Ubisoft discounting. Ditto for Watch Dogs. So I dunno
  4. I have no proof but I am 100% certain he's lying about that explanation and his amount of usage. First of all, it's worth remembering that Pettite essentially lied when he claimed that the "healing" incident in 2002 was the only time he used HGH. He also took his father's HGH in 2004 with the circumstances being a little murky as to whether he fraudulently obtained the HGH or not. The "healing" story has him using HGH in 2002. His best season came in 2005, after a full season in Houston with Clemens and the roster full of roidheads that the Astros had - and the admitted "other" HGH use. I suppose it's possible a 33-year old pitcher in the company of roidheads suddenly had his career best season, a full run-and-a-half better than his previous 7, without cheating but I'm skeptical. I'll give him credit though - "coming clean" the way he did worked a whole lot better for him than the methods other guys tried.
  5. Say what? Anybody that spends 2 seconds looking at his resume knows he's not a HOF'er. Pettite has been decent for most of his career, occasionally good, rarely great. HOF starters should have more than 2 seasons with ERAs under 3.00. HOF starters should NOT have NINE seasons with ERAs over 4.00. For all the talk of Pettite being this awesome postseason pitcher, the reality is that he was the same guy in the postseason as the regular season (3.81 ERA) who was worse in the World Series (4.06 ERA) than the rest of the time - though "being the same guy" is a mild positive in his favor, given how some guys shrink up in the spotlight. An honest evaluation of Pettite's career reveals him to be a guy that piled up a bunch of wins because he was never awful while pitching for teams that had strong offenses and great bullpens. HOF'ers are supposed to have sustained stretches of greatness. Pettite never did that. He really had two great seasons - 1997 and then 2005 when he was roiding. How much credit do we want to give him for his postseason record? Do we really think Andy and his 4.06 ERA were better in the World Series than Greg Maddux and his 2.09 ERA? Maddux is considered something of a stinker in the postseason because of his 11-14 record when the reality is that he was better than Pettite. Pettite will probably get in because the voters will give him far too much credit and won't actually look at his career. But he's definitely NOT a "no questions asked" HOF'er and shouldn't even get in at all. From baseball reference: Black Ink Pitching - 7 (339), Average HOFer ≈ 40 Gray Ink Pitching - 103 (208), Average HOFer ≈ 185 Hall of Fame Monitor Pitching - 128 (60), Likely HOFer ≈ 100 Hall of Fame Standards Pitching - 43 (60), Average HOFer ≈ 50 Note that he's beneath HOF standards in all four areas except the "Monitor" where Pettite gets a gigantic boost from pitching in the postseason every year.
  6. That just says it's a split national game without actually showing the coverage map.
  7. it was dollar night at the discount theater last night so my nephew treated me to Pacific Rim. There are major plot holes, things that just don't make any sense (these gigantic robots that must weigh millions of pounds can be flown by 8 helicopters?!?!?!), and so on, but it's still a lot of fun. The effects in general are excellent, the monsters and robots generally look cool, and there's plenty of fighting. As a 2013 American Godzilla movie, I thought it worked just fine, especially for a buck. 6/10.
  8. Both LT & Emmitt showed a lot more speed/burst than T-Rich has shown so far (Smith's longest rush being 48 yards as a rookie, LT's being 54). I think Richardson has been mediocre so far but that's not to say I think he won't improve in Indy. He's going to a much better situation with some actual talent around him. Doesn't change my original point though. Whatever the reason, so far in Cleveland Richardson's results have been mediocre.
  9. It's behind the pay wall at WSJ.com but the Wall Street Journal has an article up detailing how often umpires miss ball/strike calls and who benefits or gets punished the most by the calls. League-wide, umpires miss 8.8% of the pitches on which they have to make a determination, more than 1 in 12 - or once every third hitter. The pitcher who benefits the most from this? It shouldn't shock anyone but it's Mariano Rivera, for whom the umpires call strikes on 14.3% of his pitches that should be called balls. Here's the guys who benefit/suffer the most: Pitchers (% of called strikes on pitches taken outside zone) 1. Mariano Rivera, Yankees: 14.32. Casey Janssen, Blue Jays: 12.93. David Robertson, Yankees: 12.84. Sonny Gray, Athletics: 12.45. Clay Buchholz, Red Sox: 11.8 Hitters (% of called strikes on pitches taken in-zone) 1. Carlos Quentin, Padres: 78.5%2. Yonder Alonso, Padres: 81%3. Xavier Paul, Reds: 81%4. Chris Iannetta, Angels: 81.1%5. Matt Joyce, Rays: 81.5% Which players are harmed the most by incorrect ball-strike calls? Pitcher (% of called strikes on pitches taken in-zone) 1. Aaron Crow, Royals: 77.2%2. Brian Matusz, Orioles: 78.5%3. Clayton Richard, Padres: 78.8%4. Scott Rice, Mets: 79%5. Kyle Gibson, Twins: 79.2% Hitter (% of called strikes on pitches taken outside zone) 1. Munenori Kawasaki, Blue Jays: 13.2%2. Eric Chavez, Diamondbacks: 12%3. Adam Lind, Blue Jays: 11.8%4. Robbie Grossman, Astros: 11.1%5. Mike Carp, Red Sox: 11%
  10. The Native American folks I've known - and I've known several, thanks to the area I live in - have ALL called themselves "Indian". None of them used the term "Native American". But I sure as hell wouldn't call of them Redskin.
  11. This could easily go in the sports forum but I think it belongs here instead. Thanks to the magic of Ebay, and a good friend looking out for me, I have acquired the actual game jersey that my brother-in-law wore for his brief time with the Durham Bulls (yes, the team from the movie) in 1990. Players don't usually get to keep their stuff so to have this back in our family 23 years later is just awesome!
  12. The guy has a career long of 32 yards and is averaging 3.5 a carry. He fumbled 3 times last year (0 lost). It's obviously a give-up trade but he's been pretty mediocre so far as a pro.
  13. Anybody got a coverage map for the Saturday night ABC games? ESPN seems to only have the 3:30 EST games...
  14. This article says the Nexus 5 will have a non-removeable back and no microSD slot, both of which are big strikes against for me: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/09/17/nexus-5-vs-samsung-galaxy-note-3-expect/
  15. Yeah, $650 is pretty spendy. HTC lost me forever as a customer with my wife's One S phone.
  16. Yeah, this doesn't make any sense. Surely they could repaint the helmets right after their game the Sunday before and then add decals as needed during the week?
  17. Good call on the Nexus. I can wait for that to come out. I didn't know there was a Google Play edition of the s4. I'm not beholden to the s4 but I have an s2 and love it.
  18. Just finished season 8 of The Office. Didn't realize until I was about 1/3 of the way through that there are actually 9 seasons, not 8. I'll be starting on season 9 tonight. I liked seasons 7 and 8 a lot more than I thought I would. There's definitely a dropoff but I don't think the show fell off the cliff nearly as bad as people told me. The bad parts - like the opening video for season 7 or 8, I forget which - are really bad but they are infrequent. Thankfully, James Spader's character is not the star of the show since the character is a waste and Spader brings nothing to the table in this setting. Glad he's gone off after season 8. Too much Andy in season 8 but that's not a surprise after Ed Helms hit it big with The Hangover movies. Anyway, thanks to everybody who told me to watch the whole series, and I am eagerly anticipating season 9!
  19. Guys like that crack me up. There's a guy on the Pinball Arcade forums that claims to be able to detect single frames of animation in Street Fighter 4 and tell you how long input lag is in terms of partial FPS. He's full of crap but, hey, whatever works for him, I guess.
  20. Any suggestions on where to buy a brand-new, unlocked, phone to use at T-Mobile? Specifically like an S3 or S4 and a Note 2? Obviously Ebay is an option but I don't know who's legit, who's selling Asian models of phones as American and so on. So who's legit, online or B&M?
