RIPPA
Supposedly (and this is going by ESPN's shady math) - if the US takes 4 points from it's next two games - the secure a spot in WC 2014. I am assuming that is because of the opponents (Costa Rica and Mexico) and the amount is higher if you just did the old "magic number" bit
Cristobal
It's more about the fact that the 4th place team (Honduras) plays the 3rd place team (Mexico) and the 5th place team (Panama), so one way or another, 4th place in the hex won't be more than 10 points after these games, so 17 points with 2 left to play clinches top 3. RIPPA
ESPN (well ESPN3) to do "Red Zone" type show for World Cup qualifiers In addition, ESPN3, the live multi-screen sports network available in 85 million homes, will present ESPN’s first soccer whiparound program “FIFA World Cup Whiparound – Quest to Qualify” from 2-5 p.m. ET on each of the two September 2013 FIFA match dates. The three-hour program will take fans through several live look-ins to on-the-field action, and offer highlights of key moments in the games (goals, controversial referee decisions, et al) from the topline FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Europe. Adrian Healey and Taylor Twellman will host on Friday. Healey returns with an analyst (TBD) show on Tuesday. ESPN3’s “FIFA World Cup Whiparound – Quest to Qualify” will originate live from the ESPN Wide World of Sports Grill in Kissimmee, Fla.
LooseCannon
Via Deadspin: Brian Straus @BrianStraus Told that for past WCQs, USSF got priority lane in CR immigration. Not today. CR Gov't plans to line them up w/ everyone else. Snow revenge. Jeff Carlisle @JeffreyCarlisle Costa Rica fed recommended 3 training sites for US to use. All 3 turned the US down, forcing US to find one on its own. #usmnt Grant Wahl ✔ @GrantWahl Gamesmanship central: Costa Ricans didn't provide game balls to US for training per usual protocol. (US using its own Nike balls instead.) Eric Gómez @goaleric According to @jrmiranda_goal, cab drivers have agreed to slow traffic to a crawl on Friday, blocking the #USMNT's route. Dewar
Sounds like when Canada went to Panama and the fucking cops ran the sirens outside the hotel all night trying to "break up" a group of people partying in the street outside the hotel. Pete
The one thing that might work in our favor is that FIFA forced the match to be held at the new National Stadium instead of the decrepit Saprissa, which theoretically takes away a good chunk of the Ticos' usual home advantage. Time shall tell.
Cristobal
With Altidore probably out, I'd like to see Johannsson get a look in. He's got 4 goals in 4 appearances for AZ this season.

Pete
CONCACAF assigning a Mexican ref to work the US/Costa Rica match is fucking amazing tooWith the US playing Mexico next and something like 8 Americans already on a yellow card, no less. This match could turn into a bloodbath really fast if they aren't careful.
