Octopus Posted May 10, 2020 Posted May 10, 2020 I have fun making lists. I don’t take it too seriously, but it’s enjoyable to have a nerdy obsessive hobby. Especially when it becomes a never ending process. Almost like a tool to keep going out of your way to learn and experience new things. Around a decade ago I had a running bit with my friends that I was making a Top Ten Films for 2010. The joke was that it was always still being worked on, due to wanting to see more. That continued with other years and eventually a friend of mine and myself both did a quick project doing 100 Greatest albums. That was probably in 2017. Well, that led to a year long project (off and on) of Top 5 from 1958-2018. We worked on our own versions while being bored at work and at home, messaging each other recommendations and finding excitement in diving into different genres and our new beloved musicians. My friend taught me country music and I opened him up to hip hop. He introduced me to Nick Cave and I showed him Leonard Cohen. It culminated in a very fun night of drinking we had at his place where we ate steak and spent most of the night finally going over our list. We went through the entire list and honestly we had so much to drink that we both only actually remember getting to around the late 70’s, the rest is blurred. So we took a break from it to focus on our Top 200 Films lists (I’m more of a movie nerd than a music one, but obviously love them both) and it wasn’t until this year that we jumped back into albums. This time it was pushed back to 1950. Going back further is tough to find reliable recordings and honestly I’m pretty ignorant of that time period outside of maybe a few fun facts. I’ve had fun diving into Jazz this time, which I skipped over last. I was a fan of random Sun Ra records but learning more and appreciating Thelonious Monk and charles Mingus has been an interesting ride. Now I have more of a base to add onto as opposed to starting from nothing. I thought it would be fun to post this in its own thread instead of just random music discussion. Maybe if you guys like the idea it could become a fun project for anyone looking to dive into something. I like the idea of it being more of a personal voyage as opposed to a list by committee. Which those can be very fun, but I enjoy seeing someone’s taste. I used to work at a Barnes and Noble DVD department and I had my regulars during the Criterion sale and knowing the styles they were into, it would lead to engaging conversations and I enjoyed slipping them recommendations. Committee votes are good for crowning figurative champions and giving achievements, but a person list is more about the lister than what’s being listed. One struggle is how to rank. Especially when something can be so mood depended, like music can be. Despite the subjective struggles, creating a personal way to sort through things is fun. There is no wrong way to do any of this, of course. As long as it is somewhat logically consistent. For this list I tended to favor listenability of the entire album as opposed to which has the best singles. If I’m skipping through tracks, then it’s not for this list. I’m a big fan of a lot of artists that I’ll put in their greatest hits as opposed to their albums in full. The other emphasis is that it’s never fully set in stone. I like the idea of something being dynamic enough to be fluid. The 1 spot is pretty safe, but I’m always trying to discover more. Also, sometimes things don’t hit on the first listen. Things change over time. Here is mine. Anyone can post their own version, whatever year range or Top however many albums (3, 5, 10, 100, whatever!). 1950 1. Woodie Guthrie - Talking Dust Bowl 2. Curt McGirt Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Going by year is way too hard for me, but I gotta say, you are probably the only person to have ever thought to put Brotha Lynch Hung and Death side by side (their similar lyrical predilections notwithstanding). You also just about hit the bullseye on every single year of the '80s. Kudos! 1
Execproducer Posted May 11, 2020 Posted May 11, 2020 Yeah, I'm not going to try to do every year either but I'll throw a couple out there. And I'll do a top 10 because 5 is too much of a struggle. 1969 The Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis. Johnny Cash- At San Quentin. Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry. The Temptations - Cloud Nine. The Stooges - The Stooges The Beatles - Abbey Road. The Delfonics - Sound of Sexy Soul. The Band - The Band Booker T. & the M.G.'s - The Booker T. Set 1982 Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska Prince - 1999 Dexy's Midnight Runners - Too-Rye-Ay The Clash - Combat Rock Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - The Message Kate Bush - The Dreaming Bad Brains - Bad Brains Gang of Four - Songs of the Free Merle Haggard - Go Where the Lonely Go Scorpions - Blackout 1994 Hole - Live Through This Johnny Cash - American Recordings Townes Van Zandt - No Deeper Blue The Offspring - Smash Soundgarden - Superunknown Prince - The Black Album Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral The Go-Go's - Return to the Valley of the Go-Go's L7 - Hungry for Stink Portishead - Dummy 1
Chaos Posted May 12, 2020 Posted May 12, 2020 Kudos, sir! I've fallen badly out of album listening habits recently (been somewhat replaced by playlist and live Dead/Umphrey's sets). I probably should find a 1,000 albums before you die list and work through that throughout a couple of years. Also, seeing it listed made me turn on Veckatimest for the first time in years, and that album is still fantastic. 1

You’ll get an album that you’d put at 6 that if it came out the next or the year before would have been 1 or 2. The 90’s are a good example. So many albums I love and have nostalgic feelings for, but for a brief period there was just so many of my favorite hip hop albums. From around 87-96 my 5’s are majority hip hop, and very little great alt-Rock bands that were killing it around then. Personal preference, but I could see if someone else did those years it turning out wildly different and still being an accurate depiction of good taste of the time. Also, going through and listening to different artists, it’s a fun ride to watch when different music movements and styles take place. I’m sure if the list was more massive it would be better visually represented, but looking at when Jazz and Folk is slowly replaced by pop rock. Or when Hip Hop shows up. That Brotha Lynch Hung album is so good. It flows so nicely, how he raps with the west coast sound behind him makes it a great experience. Then you add on the horrorcore lyrics and it’s a match made in heaven. Some of his albums can be hit and miss but that one is spot on from beginning to end. Death is a group I’d like to check out more. I tend to gravitate more towards Sludge/ Doom Metal, but a buddy of mine that is more of a Metal Head recommended me a few albums and that one stuck out. Death Metal is a genre I have to be in the mood for. Moreso than Thrash, which I can enjoy is multiple moods. Both Kynch and Death albums struggle with being in the same year as 2 of my personal favorites. Liquid Swords is phenomenal and a Top 10-15 GOAT for me and KRS-ONE’s self titled album is in my Top 3 GOAT. ——— @Execproducer, a few you listed I need to still check out. Next go around I do this I’ll check a few of those out. Townes Van Zandt is legit. Doing this he was one of my big discoveries. ——— 2 hours ago, Chaos said: Kudos, sir! Also, seeing it listed made me turn on Veckatimest for the first time in years, and that album is still fantastic. Yeah, that was one of the reasons my friend and I started doing these. Today singles and playlists are such a convenient and fun way to listen to music. With all this COVID stuff going on, my wife and I had a lot of fun turning on different Spotify playlists and hanging out. My resources were websites like RYM, best ever albums, and decades lists from sites like Pitchfork. I can roll my eyes at some of the charts but it’s nice having a big list in front of you to scroll through and pick out. Just googling a specific year and typing album brings up a lot of results too. Veckatimest is legit. Great driving music. Always fun to revisit. That album and a few in the years around it were right after I graduated high school and was branching out to new things. A few tough things in life started popping up and it was nice that the music coming out around that time had such a chill, relaxed meandering style. Very needed in life to slow things down when things get hectic. 3

My one quibble would be how you and apparently everyone else sleeps on the fact that Prine's Diamonds in the Rough was a totally kick-ass brilliant album (it was my intro to Prine, if you were to pin me down I'd have to say that "Ziggy Stardust" and "Diamonds" were the two albums that really changed my life.) Granted, the stage had been set for my weirdness with "Free Your Mind", but that's neither here nor there... 1
OSJ Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 Scorpions - Blackout "Speedy's Coming"" was the best Scorpions album, but I can count the people that I know who have heard it on the fingers of one hand.

Him, Mingus, and Sun Ra have been my go-to’s as ive been diving into Jazz music. I have to listen to more Prine. Outside of the few I listed, which do you recommend?

ohtani's jacket Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 No worries. I thought it might have been a release I didn't know about.
OSJ Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Thinking about 1990s releases, I shall mention my dark horse candidate, (if y'all don't know this band go to youtube and search for band name and "Lodi" and you will be a believer too. The album is "White Dirt" by the Chickasaw Mudd Puppies!)
