Has there been a lot of pre-fight shit talking on Lobov's part?

The chip on Cub Swanson's shoulder has been larger than usual in recent interviews.

Lobov asked for the Swanson fight. Cub thinks everyone in the division should be afraid of him. So he's upset about it.

I were a fighter with Lobov's fifty fifty record, I'd go into the contest confident, relaxed, and ready to rumble, but I wouldn't go around poking the bear with the 24 and 7 record who is ranked number four in the division unless Lobov assumes that Cub will make mental mistakes during the fight if he goes in angry.

Even if Cub made a mental mistake, what can Lobov really do about it? Lobov's claim to fame is his power but he couldn't even finish Chris Avila who fights like a low budget Diaz brother (seeing as he trains with them) who didn't even belong in the UFC to begin with. Yes, you will lose if you let him stalk you around the cage and potshot you. However, if you're a featherweight with any significant quality, you should be able to beat Lobov just based on activity alone.

Which is precisely my point. I understand wanting to be confident but outright trash talk from a guy with a barely .500 record aimed at Cub is not fucking wise.

Lobov is no finisher and putting a larger chip on Cub's shoulder than usual is only going to make this assbeating more personal for Swanson.

How many shots realistically is Artem Lobov going to get to headline a UFC card? He is basically Henry Bruseles to Conor's Miguel Cotto. He is there to act as a surrogate and friend to take an ass whooping. He might as well make the most of it.

Lobov fights how people THOUGHT McGregor fought before everyone had to give in and say McGregor was a great fighter. Short of an incredible upset, he is going to be a lifelong lower to mid level fighter with maybe some upside to be a gatekeeper/trial horse. On TUF,  they built him up as the guy no one wanted to fight but it pretty turned out he was one of those fighters who is probably a beast in the gym. Mike Pyle was able to parlay that rep into a decent career, but he was already known among hardcore fans before he got that rep. Lobov isn't as versatile as a Mike Pyle, and there is no real opening for Lobov to make a run inside the UFC. This is his one moment in the sun.

I would recommend everyone check out Holtzman-McBride and Ortiz-Moreno on the prelim undercard. Those two fights were pretty dann good, especially the comeback Moreno made.

Moreno is still plenty raw, but he has tools and personality to be a star.

Alas poor Jake Ellenberger.  We hardly knew ye.

Ellenberger was looking pretty good up until that left hook. Then, it went all downhill. Straight downhill.

As for Perry, they might as well put him against another striker (or wrestler/striker).

Safe to say they can throw Iaquinta back in with the top level lightweights after his time off.

I gotta hand it to Lobov. Even though he's giving up the straight right easily, he is throwing back in combination early on.

Considering the obvious talent disparity and haven't ever faced an opponent of Swanson's caliber, Lobov gave a good account of himself and probably should be facing dudes better than what he had been facing.

I sort of feel Swanson could've ended that fight a lot quicker had he just taken Lobov down more because his takedown and grappling defense are competitive.  Seemed like Swanson allowed the fight to be a little more competitive than it needed to be.

When you're not naturally a wrestler, it's hard to be inclined to go for takedowns that deep into a fight since you are already winning handily on the feet. The last thing he wanted to do is blow takedowns and gas his arms. He tried some takedowns after that first one, but they didn't work all that well. Lobov was able to get his hips back. If he wanted to get them, it had to be something cleverly set up like that hip toss.

Lobov still sucks on the ground.  Also Al Iaquinta is an emotionally unstable baby.  If he wrecked his hotel room again, he should have to pay for it.

Hey dude, if you are trying to cut time off from school or work, maybe don't spend that time posting pictures of yourself at the beach on Instagram.  Not rocket science.

If you're winning the striking battle, no need to waste energy for takedowns you probably won't get. Midway through the fight, they were both telegraphing their takedowns and trips. If this was a heavyweight fight or light heavyweight fight, trying to tip someone over probably would have worked. However, it wasn't and Swanson was winning convincingly on the feet.  Lobov's power was diminshing and his shots were getting wider and wider. Swanson is a natural striker, and likely preferred a finish in the feet than on the ground. Many of those kicks he landed (even partially) would have put several guys away, especially that late in the fight. Just didn't happen last night.
