Matt Hardy telling Private Party that they can "keep their Cameo and Twitch accounts" got a laugh out of me. Thought Abadon delivered in her chance at the spotlight, even if some of the bits were over-the-top (and, to be honest, I can get why she and Shida went under the ring. There was criticism a few weeks back about the original neck spot looking corny. I have to think AEW considered ways to improve the spot and, when they couldn't, went with a fail-safe Plan B.). It told the story perfectly -- for Shida to triumph over Abadon, she essentially had to fight like Abadon. Where Abadon goes from here, I have no idea because, as mentioned before, she's booked as a "super heel" with no factions, friendships, etc. She can feud with anyone, but there's no one you can specifically target at the moment. Have her continue working on Dark beating jobbers to protect her and work on her in-ring skills while working on ways to advance the character. Having a Gary Hart-esque manager do the talking for her might help -- I don't know how she normally speaks, but I'm curious if she'd be open to doing double duty, wrestling as Abadon and appearing more, well, "human" as Abadon's spokesperson or advisor. Given her talents with costuming and makeup, I could see her come up with a second character that will make it hard to believe that she and Abadon are, in fact, the same person.

I was catching up on AEW Dark on YouTube last night when my daughter (whose nine) walked into the room, got one look at Abadon, and promptly walked out. Kayfabe lives. We always talk about imagining how an AEW wrestler would look if the large crowds were in the building. Abadon would probably be at the top of the list these days -- she's the new Papa Shango -- a legitimately scary-looking individual inside the ring. One thing I remember most about Papa Shango's squash matches is that the cameras would always get closeups of children with horrified looks on their faces -- imagine the same scenario with Abadon as she crawls down the aisle, spitting blood and screaming, etc. And over time, I'm seeing the announcers getting more comfortable speaking about Abadon behind the mic -- focusing on her unpredictability in the ring, while also noting intangibles that set her apart from the rest of the women (watch her Dani Jordyn squash -- spends the whole match attacking Jordyn's braced knee, and wins by submission by simply punching the knee non-stop. Sadistic, yet also original and cerebral). Like Matt Borne-era Doink, every squash match she has is different. She can be sloppy inside the ring but, to be honest, she SHOULD be. Just let her be sadistic and cruel -- nothing fancy (the widow's peak is a good finisher, but there's a huracanrana/face-buster style move she's done as a finisher more than once that needs to go). And she gets doing the little things right -- stopping Jordyn from doing a collar and elbow by simply screaming at the top of her lungs was a nice touch. Feuding with Shida will be a good test for her, but I can also see why it took so much time to find a feud for her. You can go a lot of directions with her (she's a loner, so you could have her feud with both faces and heels) but, at the same time, it can be tough to immediately match Abadon with someone given her unusual gimmick. As far as having a mouthpiece, this is when you wish Gary Hart was still around. Could you imagine Hart delivering Abby or Muta-style promos in support of Abadon? (One other note -- one match I watched was Abadon-Anna Jay from Dynamite, where Jim Ross noted that Jay was struggling in part due to Abadon's "girth." Then, after a very awkward pause, Ross said he meant "athletic girth." Abadon is having this breakout moment, and JR opts to make a potshot about her weight. Has anyone sat down with JR to discuss his weird, distracting remarks about the women? When Serena Deeb debuted, one of the first things out of his mouth was how she should go on a date with Diamond Dallas Page since they're both yoga instructors. What's that got to do with anything? If you can't find something to say, keep your mouth shut.)

IIRC, Hogan's 1987 Survivor Series team originally had Superstar Graham instead of Muraco -- Muraco stepped in when Graham was "injured" by OMG and Reed. The Hogan team with Graham instead of Muraco would have been far worse -- presumably Graham and Reed would have brawled to the back for a double countout, as I can't imagine Graham taking any bumps. The whole point of that main event was to give Bigelow the shine -- having him go 1-on-3 against Andre, Bundy and OMG, and nearly pulling off the miracle. It's a shame the WWF didn't move that along further (given all the backstage politics involving Savage, HTM and the IC belt heading into 1988, I do wonder that if Honky agreed to drop the IC Belt to Savage on NBC Main Event, and the original plans of DiBiase winning the belt in the WM4 tournament went forward, if said final would have been DiBiase-Bigelow, with Bigelow getting the "Savage run" of four matches). I also wish they played up the "do they trust each other" angles with Hogan-Orndorff and Savage-Steamboat. All I recall is Hogan and Savage telling Orndorff and Steamboar that they don't care for them, but they both hate Heenan and HTM respectively so it's all good. I was 12 at the time and thought that was dumb. Having, say, Steamboat play Ricky Morton and have Savage show reluctance to accept his tag (with the announcers screaming if Savage could let bygones be bygones for the sake of the team) would have made decent theater.

Isaacs' contract expired a few weeks back and he opted to move on. Zicky Dice is apparently still under contract ... there was talk that he would be released but the NWA reportedly renewed his contract. Marti Belle and Ashley Vox may still be under contract.

Outside of reading the reviews here and in the Observer, as well as the occasional highlight on YT, I have no interest in WWE. It's been the same old, same old for far too long -- main-event scene loaded with aging part-timers, generally bad storylines, a glut of wrestlers on both brands with nothing to do, titles that are meaningless, etc. I cringe every time the WWE opts to remove a wrestler's first name from their intros or go to the "soap opera name generator" to re-christen a wrestler. Honestly, the only real successes at the moment could be Roman and the Hurt Business, and that's probably because their work is being scripted "outside the bubble" so to say. I've watched AEW pretty much from the beginning? Is it perfect? Of course not, there is no "perfect" wrestling promotion. It's made its fair share of mistakes. But AEW has given wrestling a shot in the arm. The in-ring product is different (it's not "generic WWE" -- you get a little bit of everything on each show). Wrestlers, announcers, referees, etc., seem motivated and enthused about being there and giving a flip. The former WWE personalities there have rejuvenated (Moxley) or re-invented (Jericho) themselves. They are willing to take risks, whether it be Elite-Inner Circle in the football stadium, Jericho and MJF singing showtunes, etc. They are giving opportunities to wrestlers who were either castoffs or potential "NXT lifers" and they, for the most part, are delivering. During my lunch break, I watched the third Avalon-Cutler match. This was great, and I was into the match from start to finish. Both gave it their all and put on a heck of a match. And that's the thing -- I always got a kick watching 80s/early 90s WWF house shows and seeing two perennial jobbers having a match (I was all in for Iron Mike Sharpe vs. SD Jones). That was their reward for making the main eventers look good -- a chance to have their own showcase matches. And Avalon-Cutler was Iron Mike-SD multiplied by 50. AEW made you care about Cutler, Avalon and Leva Bates, even though none of them could win a match. And as time wore on, the fans were hoping at least one could win and were excited to see them try and break their losing streaks. Imagine that -- a group of enhancement talents arguably had one of the best feuds of the year, and it's because AEW wants you to care about every single wrestler and personality on its roster, and those three wrestlers want you to care about them by putting on the best matches they can. We haven't seen that in the WWE in more than 20 years. Same thing goes with Impact and NWA. Every wrestler and personality on their rosters get opportunities to shine and try to win interest of the fans. And both companies are willing to take risks to help their talent get the shine (Wrestle House is a good example). That wouldn't happen in today's WWE. Thanks to good scouting and hard work, AEW, Impact and NWA have found "diamonds in the rough" that have won over many. We praise and get excited watching the likes of Ricky Starks, Jordynne Grace, Orange Cassidy, Best Friends and Thunder Rosa. All three promotions can do a match or storyline with an "old fogey" and pull it off without looking stupid (Rock n Roll Express, Tully Blanchard, Mike Jackson). There's a lot of originality, and that's something I enjoy seeing. With WWE, just reading the results gives me a headache -- Orton is the headliner AGAIN? Nia Jax has sent Lana through a table every week for six weeks? Enough already!
