1. The Guardian featured a series of indie wrestling photos on their site today - https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2022/jul/14/body-slams-and-super-fans-an-indie-wrestling-diary-in-pictures
2. With just five episodes left, I'd guess we're gonna be leaving the McGill timeline next week, moving into BB, and then the final episode or two in the Gene timeline.
3. I rewatched the trilogy earlier this year, introducing my son to them. They're still pretty decent. The first is the best of the bunch as movies in 1997 still relied on practical effects. Watching the second one a few days later really highlighted the shift the industry made to CGI in that time period, although to be fair the CGI in both still holds up somewhat. Was surprised to see David Cross show up in bit parts in the first two. Actually he's shown up in bit parts in a bunch of movies I've watched from that era recently (The Cable Guy, Small Soldiers, Ghost World) EDIT: I should say I bought the above single on CD at the time too. Fun song and video.
4. Unfortunate closed captioning...
5. Well, that's the thing. I had to pick some kind of cutoff point, and here it's that the matches are listed on Cagematch. It's just a bit of fun, and not designed to be taken seriously. If we were to hunt down match results not listed on Cagematch, then it'd quickly become something like "oh Terry Funk lost a match in 1976 that's not listed" and then I'd have to re-do the whole lineage. If Storm hasn't wrestled by the end of the year (or some arbitrary point I decide on) then I'll just consider it vacant and go back to Simms.
6. I had a go at a tag title too. There were lots of stops and starts in the early years, firstly because cagematch records are obviously spotty, but also because tag partners are sometimes just together for a bit and then never wrestle together again.
7. The women's title... 17/08/19 Jamie Hayter Tokyo, Japan 01/09/19 Utami Hayashishita Sendai, Japan 19/01/20 Arisa Hoshiki [2] Tokyo, Japan 16/02/20 VACANT / RETIRES 16/02/20 Utami Hayashishita [2] Awarded as last champion. 13/09/20 Maika Fukuoka, Japan 19/09/20 Syuri Tokyo, Japan 20/09/20 Risa Sera Tokyo, Japan 08/11/20 Ram Kaicho Saitama, Japan Defeats Sera and Chun Li Shinobu in a 3 way match. 13/12/20 Madeline Tokyo, Japan Defeats Kaicho and Banny Oikawa in a 3 way match. 16/12/20 Suzu Suzuki Saitama, Japan 23/01/21 Tsukasa Fujimoto [2] Tokyo, Japan 09/05/21 Mochi Miyagi Saitama, Japan Defeats Fujimoto, Tae Honma and Totoro Satsuki in a 4 way match. 16/05/21 Tsukasa Fujimoto [3] Sendai, Japan 13/11/21 Tsukushi Haruka Tokyo, Japan 17/11/21 Rina Shingaki Saitama, Japan Wins a gauntlet match involving Haruka. 23/11/21 Ayame Sasamura Chiba, Japan 25/12/21 Nagisa Nozaki Kawasaki, Japan 01/01/22 Yumi Ohka Tokyo, Japan 23/01/22 Rina Amikura Kawasaki, Japan 13/03/22 Kakeru Sekiguchi Tokyo, Japan 10/04/22 Moeka Haruhi Kawasaki, Japan
8. Ok, update on this one...
06/04/19 Matt Taven New York, NY Defeats Lethal and Marty Scurll in a 3 way ladder match. 15/06/19 Bandido Tijuana, Mexico Defeats Taven, Adam Brooks and Dragon Lee in a 4 way match. 16/06/19 Dragon Lee Monterrey, Mexico Defeats Bandido and Emperador Azteca in a 3 way match. 28/06/19 Dalton Castle Baltimore, MD 29/06/19 Jonathan Gresham Philadelphia, PA Defeats Castle, Jeff Cobb and Kenny King in a 4 way match. 05/07/19 Dragon Lee [2] Daly City, CA 21/07/19 Kenny King Lowell, MA 25/08/19 Jeff Cobb Nashville, TN Defeats King, Jay Lethal and Matt Taven in a 4 way match. 06/09/19 Kenny King [2] Dearborn, MI Defeats Cobb and Tracy Williams in a 3 way match. 07/09/19 Colt Cabana Villa Park, IL Defeats King and Dalton Castle and Marty Scurll in a 4 way match. 20/09/19 JP Simms Moncton, NB 22/11/19 Mike Hughes Moncton, NB 23/11/19 JP Simms [2] Truro, NS Defeats Hughes, Titus and Duke MacIsaac in a 4 way match. 13/03/20 Ryan Storm Moncton, NB
The title has been stuck in East Coast Canadian indies for a while. This Ryan Storm guy has only wrestled once (in Oct 21) since he won it, although it's just as likely that Cagematch doesn't cover the shows he has wrestled on.
9. There is. I've been keeping it updated every few months or so. I'll post it over the weekend if I remember.
10. The periods you've chosen don't quite line up with my own so I'll just go with my own - 91-95 was my childhood intro to wrestling. We didn't have cable so would watch at our friends when we could and rely on others (including my dad's co-worker) to record the PPVs (things meant a lot more back in the day when you had to work hard to access them instead of having everything at the click of a button. The thrill of the hunt is mostly gone from today's society) We collected the cards, magazines, plastered our walls with posters, had our wrestling figure feds, etc. The other period I have fond memories of is 99-05. I had grown out of it in my teenage years and got back in in a huge way, watching with my brother and introducing my then-girlfriend. Loved discovering the behind the scenes aspect via the internet, reading the WON, tracking down old VHS tapes in second hand shops. Nothing has ever come close to hitting those memories for me. I think subconsciously I've always been chasing those feelings but really I think I just watch wrestling (AEW these days, not WWE) out of habit now and unfortunately not getting a ton of enjoyment out of it (even when the wrestling is very good)
11. Do they just always pump in crowd noise now? Sounded like a mixed reaction, and I can't get too mad at people cheering him - not everybody follows news all the time. However if you did know the reason for Vince being there and you still cheered, then you're quite the dick.
12. Yes, very interesting ? Y'know, I did begin typing a good faith response to you but you seem to be angling for an argument for some reason. I think you've misread my posts somewhere here because you appear to be insinuating something that is not borne out by my posts. We're in agreeance on the topic at hand. I was just pointing out that an immediately combative tone doesn't lead to an engaged audience. You feel different obviously. The left eating the left, plus ça change.
13. That line was more in response to the attitude that if you're not supportive of every single aspect of trans culture, then you're automatically a transphobic bigot. That's an obviously ridiculous point of view. In this thread, NoFistsJustFlips asked a question about pronouns and AxB labels him a fascist. How is that helpful for getting people on your side? Apart from fascists, you know who else asks questions? People who want to learn and increase their understanding and knowledge. I believe most people are generally okay with the idea of transgender, but don't necessarily know everything there is to know or the correct terminology. Faced with confrontational posts when just wanting to discuss the topic, people are likely to just back away completely and lose the opportunity to learn.
14. This "all or nothing" stance is ridiculous and is what turns away potential allies. Pointing out that "they" can lead to misunderstanding or make for awkward grammar does not make one a bigot or an enemy.
15. It can cause confusion though. There was a musician who died last year who went by "they" and also used a one word moniker for their stage name. I'd never heard of them and can't remember their name now or the actual cause of death, but let's say it was something like "Blam". I was half listening to the radio in the car when the DJ mentioned "Blam died earlier this morning in Miami. They were reportedly drinking heavily at a party and fell over a 10 storey balcony." and I'm thinking "what, the whole band?!"
16. Yep, that chase in the woods looked ridiculous. Also the actress playing Leia runs like a toddler so it's hard to believe that grown ups would have trouble catching her. It's also hard believing that she's supposed to be playing a ten year old. Although, wiki says she's turning 10 this week, I presume this was filmed a couple years ago, or she's just a really short girl. Also while I'm bitching about a little girl, I have to say I find the character annoying. What is it with this franchise and wanting to show iconic characters as whiny little brats?
17. Someone was uploading them to YT years ago but they kept getting taken down, so I only saw the first few episodes. I remember falling about the place at Mortimer's terrible Taxi Driver impression.
18. My favourite Liotta role is actually Tommy Vercetti in Vice City.
19. There's an article in the Guardian today interviewing collectors, one of whom is Peter Blake, cover artist for Sgt. Pepper's. Which wrestler does he have here? Kinda looks like CM Punk.
20. Nice, I noticed that camera man last week and thought he looked suspicious but then nothing came of it.
21. Wordle, Globle, Framed and now Quordle (4 Wordles at the same time) for me
22. Ah gotcha. The imperial system is still used in metric system countries - pints being the obvious one, but also feet for height, yards in football and, in the British Isles, stone for weight, for example.
23. Canada too. I'm curious what you guys use down south now.
