Brian Fowler Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 There is a very good argument to be made that TD's 96-98 stretch is the best the year run by a tailback ever.
Niners Fan in CT Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 The old timers claim Gale Sayers was a special, once in a generation kind of talent. I only have video and I haven't seen much of it. I think TD should be in too though. Bettis was a compiler more than anything. TD was better than him. 1
johnnyboy Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 There is a very good argument to be made that TD's 96-98 stretch is the best the year run by a tailback ever. Smith's is probably the closest in 92-94. He never got the magic 2k, but in a 3 year span he's got 2 rings, NFL MVP, rushing title, Super Bowl MVP etc. (+another ring in 95 obviously) They're probably 1a and 1b in best 3 year windows as a total package. TD had more total rushing yardage and the 2k, which maybe shades it, but it's coinflip territory.
elizium Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 I think TD should be in the Hall, but I think he's been hurt slightly by the fact that after he retired, it seemed like the Broncos could throw any plug in the backfield and they'd get 1000 yards. Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, Tatum Bell and Reuben Draughns all had 1000+ yard seasons behind that line (Portis too, but he was great). It probably shouldn't matter, because TD was all world, but maybe some voters give more credit to the line, than Davis himself? If only he had a stereotype smashing friendship with a dying white guy, he'd have been in already. I totally believe that Brian's Song is 50% responsible for getting Sayers in the Hall.
Burgundy LaRue Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Damn, that's a harsh thing to say, even coming from a Packers fan.
elizium Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Probably yeah, but I think that without it, he isn't in. He a guy that had 4 and a half really good years, but probably falls into the same trap as TD, too little longevity even for a sport with such a high rate of attrition. But that movie had such a huge cultural impact, that he became more important to the game than just as a player. Shit, I've gotten dusty watching it and I think the Bears can go die in a fire. If it makes it any better, when I first wrote that post, I had it at 80% responsible... I think he deserves to be there, but that movie is totally what put him over the top.
elizium Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 I wonder if Shanny's ability to generate 1000 yard rushers from almost anyone has hurt TD's chances. I somehow didn't see this post before I wrote mine. Mea culpa, but dogwelder gets it.
Tabe Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Not a Broncos fan by any stretch of the imagination, (except during the Tebow era <3) but who does TD have to sleep with to get in?4 or 5 more years of active play? What an odd name for a person. 2

I'm saying THAT is an odd name for a person, not your username
