legace
As the title of the topic suggests, I'm attempting to compile a master-list of surviving professional wrestling footage from before the year 1970. However, I won't be covering everything from that era, there'll be no newsreels, filmreels or short highlights of any kind, only substantial footage. I will include certain stuff that's joined-in-progress as long as it's more than just the finish to a match or segment and I'll be adding links where I can so that what I find can be viewed by those interested. I'll be placing all updates here in the first post in geographical order so it's easier for everyone to locate them but I'll also leave a reply at the bottom of the topic to notify people too. This project is a work-in-progress but here's what I've come up with so far: CANADA Queensbury Athletic Club / Maple Leaf Wrestling (Toronto, Ontario) (1930-1969) 1957 (01) Baron Gattoni -vs- Red Lyons (17th January 1957) LINK - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbryxEaEUY0 (02) Bill Miller & Ed Miller -vs- Ken Kenneth & Pat Flanagan (17th January 1957) LINK - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxczOHu0PwY (03) Édouard Carpentier -vs- Steve Stanlee (17th January 1957) LINK - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4xs-tCAXYQ 4
notoriusvig
The Chicago Film Archives on YT has a ton of stuff including some Lou Thesz/Buddy Rogers. This thread is a great idea. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I already watched the Carpentier match.
Dolphman 3000
There's 145 pre-1970 matches recommended on Cagematch, so that's probably a good start: https://www.cagematch.net/?id=111&view=list&s=71200 Edited June 17, 2023 by Dolphman 3000

I'll be going through what exists from that territory very soon. And glad you like the thread. 21 hours ago, Dolphman 3000 said: There's 145 pre-1970 matches recommended on Cagematch, so that's probably a good start: https://www.cagematch.net/?id=111&view=list&s=71200 Excellent. notoriusvig
The Carpentier match was pretty fun. He was way ahead of his time. The Baron Gottoni match was dreadful though. I didn't get to watch the other one yet.

Oh I see, it's something called the glorydays of wrestling. Figures, I ask you the question about it and two seconds later I just go to their site instead lol. Carpentier showed flashes of what he could do in that match, shame it wasn't longer though. 1 hour ago, zendragon said: I found old wrestling including the Buddy Rogers title win on Tubi I just tried to go on the Tubi site but it's not available in my area apparently. legace
Excellent! I'll add that to my Gulf Athletic Club list. I'm currently working on Fred Kohler Enterprises / International Wrestling Association (Chicago).

Curt McGirt
There is amazing stuff in the French Catch category. And Bull Curry/Johnny Valentine is awesome. But then all Johnny Valentine is awesome.
legace
I've read a lot about how ahead of it's time and state of the art French Catch was. I haven't watched any of it yet but am looking forward to doing so. Haven't watched the Valentine match yet either but expect it to be good cause like you said, he's always good.
Curt McGirt
Bull Curry has to be the ugliest wrestler to actually be a babyface not named George Steele. Maybe somebody else has a placement?
legace
You could be right. But I think in some cases fans prefer to cheer less attractive looking people rather than good looking people anyway cause they see them as less of a threat. Curt McGirt
He had probably been around long enough in the territory that he finally got over as a face with the fans. Or, your reason. Was Ox Baker always a heel?
