  1. To add to that, the Rangers play a lot of road games at Seattle and Houston - places where visiting players don't have to pay income tax on their earnings. According to Boras, Choo would have needed to get $148m from the Yankees to equal the $130m he got from Texas.Be honest: how many of you knew that players had to pay state income taxes on their away game checks (where applicable)? I'd read that before but had forgotten it. I think most people know that. Its a big thing the local sports teams in Toronto do now to ease concerns over the high taxation rate in Ontario and Canada when they are wooing a potential free agent
  2. Hopefully Broner takes this as a learning opportunity and starts hitting the gym with a fury. Seems like he was saying all the right stuff after the fight. People say his work ethic is a bit dodgy. I dont know but he will be better served maybe moving back down to 140 or something. Have to hand it to Paulie. He really showed a lot of Broner's weaknesses. Same his punch cant break wet paper towel
  3. Ties blow. Especially when teams were getting into the high teens or over 20 ties in a season. Should be a better way to eliminate ties but you dont want the fans to see how much better 4 on 4 or 3 on 3 hockey would be.
  4. No one on earth needs a bag of fries that big. Portion control guys
  5. I would like the possibility of Quebec City explored since there is always talk of how big amatuer football is in Quebec and you cant deny the success at the college level but Q City is already spending a lot on the new hockey arena. Its an intriguing opportunity though. But again until a money man comes forward and says he wants to own a team all expansion and stadium talk is moot. 10 teams seem like a must though. I know they really wanted Ottawa back but I would have had a plan for a 10th team in place to give the league some balance. Maybe they are expecting the Toronto Argos to call it quits
  6. Problem is no one wants to own a team in Atlantic Canada or build a stadium for it. Dont worry as fast as you can say Glieberman the Ottawa Stupidteamnames will be in the Ottawa football graveyard with the Rengades and the old Riders
  7. Fuck a Joe Gibbs. One of those Super Bowls was from the 9 game 1982 season and another one from the 15 game scab season. Those two are tainted wins. I only give him credit for one Super Bowl and even a shit coach like Barry Switzer could win one. Joe Gibbs was no Bill Walsh. If nothing Bill Walsh turning the 1979 2-14 San Francisco 49ers into Super Bowl champs 2 years later is astounding. Especially when you consider the Niners traded away their 1st round 1st overall pick in the 1979 draft for the remnants of OJ Simpson
  8. Tough for anyone in Florida to get excited about a team that has made the playoffs 4 times in their 19 seasons in the league and look like they are going to finish far out of the playoffs once again. Rewind to 1996 when Panther-mania was running wild all the way to the finals and everyone was gushing about how this situation was working like gangbusters.
  9. The bars on King Street West will be crying into their overpriced Jack Daniels . The female fans in Toronto will have to find a new object for their affection. I liked JP but man he was way too confident and comfortable with his production last year. Yeah he was hurt but who isnt towards the end of a long season
  10. No the Whale shouldn't come back. They are stuck being so close to Boston and not that far away from NYC. I know the Boston Bruins made them change their name from the New England Whalers to the Hartford Whalers back in 1979 I dont know if they can claim territorial rights now or not. But things could change if some billionaire hockey fan from the area can get a building built and makes some friends but it will never cure the things that hurt small market teams
  11. They just didnt have money an arena an owner a few of those pesky important things franchises need. The NHL should have given the TB franchise to Karmanos but still doesnt stop the fact that the Whale was bound for relocation
  12. At this rate TSN2 will be showing rodeo, darts and truck pulls.
  13. Possibly cutting a duet album together based on the success of this solo one: http://www.amazon.com/McCarver-Sings-Selections-American-Songbook/dp/B002OJGGH6 The Most Helpful Customer Reviews for that CD are brilliant
  14. Haven't watched the fight but listened to the radio commentary. Most are saying it's a crap stoppage. With a boxing fatality and 2 guys punched into comas over the last 4 weeks you are going to see quick stoppages for awhile
  15. Truly shocking considering how tenuous the situation is for the future of all the clubs in the east. Westerners must have got up early to pop that ratings number
  16. Hockey always have been a Boston Bruins fan. When I was a kid loved the Don Cherry led Big Bad Bruin teams. Should have won more but the Habs were unreal back then. Baseball Toronto Blue Jays since they are the local team. Pittsburgh was my National League team since the 1979 World Series was the first series I really got into since my Dad never had baseball on the TV and he let me watch some of that. They were a great team Football Oakland Raiders and the Hamilton ti-Cats. Raiders probably because of the renegade image. Dont know why I gravitated to the Ti-Cats. Probably because they wore black and yellow like the Bruins. Never liked basketball too much just liked certain players. Julius Erving was my fav player as a kid. Strange I dont like basketball since the first live sporting event I saw was a Buffalo Braves game when I was 5. Never got too into soccer but went to a few Toronto Blizzard games back in the day
  17. Sorry didn't know there was a statute of limitations around here. I will reply with my snappy comments quicker just for you Sparky
  18. I think dumping Darcy Regier right now was a bad move for the team going forward (I understand the firing was done to improve the team in the fan's opinions/because fans weren't renewing season tickets) but Darcy Regier is absolutely the guy you want managing a team that's already out of it basically and is planning on dumping players for picks/prospects. -He sent Thomas Vanek, with just 3/4s of a season left on his deal for a 1st rounder, 2nd rounder and a player in Matt Moulson whom will likely fetch a 1st or 2nd at the deadline. -Earlier this year, at the deadline, he sent out Jordan Leopold with 2 months left on his deal and picked up a 2nd and 5th. -Also this year, he got Johan Larsson, Matt Hackett and a 1st round pick for Jason Pominville. -Again this year, he snagged two 2nd rounders for Robyn Regehr, who had a couple months left on his deal. -In 2012, he got a 1st rounder for Paul Gaustad (on an expiring deal) and a 4th. -In 2008, he got Steve Bernier (whom he later flipped for a 2nd and 3rd) and a 1st round pick for Brian Campbell on an expiring deal. Regier is a guy who consistently gets more than he should for players on expiring contracts (I still can't believe he got a 1st rounder for Paul Gaustad when Marek Zidlicky, Antoine Vermette, Andrei Kostitsyn, Johnny Oduya, and Nicklas Grossman were all dealt at the deadline that year and not one of them fetched a 1st rounder in return). Personally, I probably would have kept Regier on to the end of the year, then dumped him after the season was over. Agree about shitcanning Regier. Its just odd that you get rid of a GM and coach and then just bring in a coach and slap the interim tag on him. Now when it comes time to hire a GM is the first proviso of the job going to be that you cant hire your own coach you have to accept Ted Nolan.
  19. WTF. Rolston seemed like a real shit stain and bush league but situations like this scream desperate and despite his buckets of money and love of the game the Buffalo owner looks like he is becoming one of those guys that cant stay out of the way
  20. Oh, come on. Slightly horse-faced, sure, but one of the top 25 ugliest? Chamique Holdsclaw, on the other hand, has a hairline to rival Gervinho's. Please her face could stop a sundial. People used to see Howard Stern running in Central Park and they thought it was Rebecca Lobo
  21. Yeah Howard Eskin was on the radio in Toronto last night and he couldnt even figure out who the Phillies would send the other way if they acquired Bautista. He seemed to think it would be a stright up trade Bautista for Domenic Brown. Will be surprised if Bautista doesnt get moved during the winter meetings
  22. Maybe quicker if Buffalo sucks really bad for a couple of years and they wind up winning the Connor McDavid sweepstakes
