  1. Random thought. The in-ring career of Shawn Michaels is the greatest character arc in the history of wrestling. Young up-and-comer who betrays his friend for individual glory. A selfish jerk who sees the light of being a do-gooder and in doing so achieves his boyhood dream. Once at the top of the heap, becomes paranoid and reckless before being forced into retirement. The big comeback from exile. Holding off younger challengers who studied his blueprint. Eventually makes peace with the man he betrayed at the very beginning. Finally killed off by one of his greatest foes. Its positively Dickensian (it even has a rival mocking him for the loss of his fortune.) Its the Great American Novel of pro wrestling.
  2. I think its telling that the commentary team barely even put The Ascension over on Smackdown. Cole: "John, Do the Ascension have what it takes to make it here?" JBL: (five second pause) "Don't know." Pretty funny.
  3. The problem with the Ascension is that the two are just horribly miscast and don't fit the gimmick of two fearsome monsters at all.
  4. Does anyone listen to Russo's podcast? I'm looking at the description for this week's and it features Marc Mero telling a tale of being a Miami drug lord whose connections went as far as Colombia! That's got to be awesome, right?
  5. When The Miz looks more intimidating than the two new debuting "monsters", there's a problem. The smaller Ascension guy's pants kept looking like they were going to fall down. I can't stop obsessing over the height (or lack thereof) of Mercury and Noble whenever they are onscreen. Rollins is listed as 6'1" which seems legit and they look to be close to a foot shorter.
  6. It had a limited number of copies available and the co-author stubbornly refuses to print another run despite wrestling fans (and even Steve Austin) telling him to.
  7. I like the idea of wrestling being on Saturday mornings. It brings to mind being younger watching Mania, the WCW syndicated stuff, and LIVEWIRE~! I really think TNA should go for a Saturday 6pm slot to play off the muthaship nostalgia.
  8. Elaborate, please. Prichard basically stated that "even if you couldn't work, you could still get booked in Memphis" as long as you were willing to take the low payouts from Jarrett or Lawler. Personally, I feel like as the years go by (and especially as we're hearing more voices from the era through podcasts), Mid-South, World Class, Florida, et al are being given more and more their due at the expense of the Memphis territory.
  9. Prichard's Memphis discussion sort of validated something I've been thinking lately the more territory stories I hear on these podcasts. Memphis wrestling kind of sucked.
  10. Ambrose's Vince impression is now my favorite. Way more nuanced than the popular "Goddamn, pal!" which is kind of hacky at this point.
  11. Anyone remember WCW Prime from the mid-90s? It seems to be the forgotten syndicated show. In my market, it aired on the regional sports channel at 3 in the afternoon on a weekday so catching the end of some WCW after school was bizarre. I found some full episodes up on Youtube. The highlight going through them seems to be Sting vs. Eaton in a 10 minute match. The New Japan guys are on some of the tapings so you get Kensuke Sasaki vs. Mr. JL (Jerry Lynn) for those who like odd pairings. Happy hunting.
  12. Cody's twitter account is hilariously geeky based off his profile pic alone. I like it though.
  13. If only this were the late 90s, HHH would go over a dwarf "CM Punk" on Raw this Monday, and that would be the end of it.
  14. I'd be okay with Jericho converting his podcast into one focused on cult movies. He seem pretty well versed in them and I've heard enough wrestler podcast interviews over the past few years, I'm kind of over them.
  15. I think it's just the stuff he had been doing in ECW was heavy on promos and angles. Then he's brought in with a mouthpiece to be a cold, emotionless wrestling machine. It didn't play to the strengths that had gotten him noticed. This is true. However, if you check out his introduction on the Brother Love show, he delivers a pretty fun heel promo wherein he implores viewers at home to touch his hand through the tv screen to feel "what its like to be destined for success". Although, Ringmaster's overuse of the word "man" was a little much, man. Not sure how to imbed the Youtube for those interested, but the WWE uploaded it, man.
  16. I never get why Austin considers The Ringmaster to be such a terrible gimmick. Sure, he probably would have rather used the Austin name from the get-go, but Dibiase managed guys at that time period were considered potential upper echelon heels. Its not like he was brought in to be Freddie Joe Floyd.
  17. Fandango's new Flamenco theme music is pretty baller. One thing I wish modern day wrestling had is character specific theme music and less "crappy Nu-Metal for everyone!" Granted I know its a symptom of less gimmicky guys but still...
  18. When was this? I'm intrigued enough to want to take a gander at Punk fecal-freakin' in the ring w/ the Shield boys. It was an early December Smackdown match against Ambrose last year. It wasn't for the faint for the faint of heart.
  19. 2001 heel Austin was pretty awesome with the gold knee braces and "The Bionic Redneck" nickname being used for the first time. It kind of bums me out when Austin downplays the character on his podcast. That said, the gimmick did take some strange turns during the Invasion with the constant burials of the WCW/ECW guys in those in-ring promos.
  20. I think the Attitude era audience for the p.roduct at the time would have totally ate up a quick 30 second squash (provided of course Shawn was able to take a Stunner).
  21. Just got caught up with the Batista 2 parter. The "rape child" gimmick was a hilariously bad idea. Surely Vince will recycle that concept to give to some NXT callup at some point.
  22. If Dr. Death doesn't get injured in the Brawl for All tournament, does his rumored main event program with Austin ever come to fruition? At the time, it didn't seem like he "fit" aesthetically in 98 WWF. Also, JR as a heel mouth piece always seem ill conceived when the Fed tried it. I just don't see the flood of new Attitude era fans, at the time, buying Williams as a monster that would be a threat to bulldoze Austin.
  23. He had no problem revealing to marks how to sell a worked punch 15 years ago on MTV.
  24. The Dungeon of Doom segments were a major part of me becoming a more regular wrestling viewer after I lapsed as a kid in the early 90s after the Hulkamania era ended. My dad and I would laugh at the cheesy Master/Taskmaster segments and it was also cool at the time in terms of seeing what ex WWF guy would debut next. Not even a year later, the NWO debuts and it was off to the races with my Monday Night War watching and discovering the IWC.
  25. Much like with De-Stalinization in the Soviet Union, the De-Ortonization era of the WWE should be a relatively fruitful time. Except, rather than statues of Stalin being taken down, strategically placed and well thought out tattoo murals on wrestlers will slowly disappear.
