SirFozzie Posted February 5, 2017 Author Posted February 5, 2017 The Six Nations began today, with England winning an ugly war against France, and when Scotland trailed Ireland late 22-21, everyone thought "Oh jeez, Scotland's going to bottle it again, and everyone's going to have to put on brave faces and talk about what might have been and how Scotland was almost there... AGAIN".... They got there this time, thanks to two late penalty conversions. That's right, scotland beat Ireland, 27-22. It's a whole new world, folks!
DangerMark Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 Really happy for Scotland. They were playing some damn fine rugby to watch in the first half. They forgot which end of the ball to hold for a while in the second half; while the Irish back row (w/ Rory Best) ran roughshod over them. Heroic defending, with a bit of help from an ineffective Ireland back division meant they were still in it late on. I was debating with a friend about what they should do with the last two penalties; I think they had it right. Get the bonus if you can and at 79 minutes, burn the clock and take the win. Whatever you do, don't let Ireland have the bloody ball.
SirFozzie Posted February 5, 2017 Author Posted February 5, 2017 I'm kinda bummed that I didn't work a New Day joke into my last post. Wales beat Italy 33-7, but didn't get the bonus point.
DangerMark Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 Didn't deserve it either, from that first half.
SirFozzie Posted February 12, 2017 Author Posted February 12, 2017 Ireland took Italy to several different woodsheds and beat them through them all, and England were ugly again, but won, again over Wales. England have games against Scotland, Ireland and Italy left.. They've won ugly, but having won 16 in a row, is a Grand Slam on the table here?
SirFozzie Posted February 12, 2017 Author Posted February 12, 2017 Scotland can't make it two of two, falling to France 22-16. Table after two rounds (4 points for 1, bonus point for 4 tries and/or losing by less than 7) England 8, Ireland 6, Scotland 5, France 5, Wales 5, Italy 0
Red is Dead Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 we weren't bad today, but we gave away too many unforced penalties. made for a difficult second half to watch. Am REALLY impressed with the Scottish defence though. They arent showing up for 60 minutes then fucking off, nowhere to be seen. The english arent looking convincing winners, either. They'll win the whole thing, but I dont think they'll get the grand slam.
SirFozzie Posted February 12, 2017 Author Posted February 12, 2017 All due respect to Scotland, but the last round against Ireland is the only banana peel I see, and that could be a championship decider at Ireland and a Grand Slam final game as well
SirFozzie Posted February 24, 2017 Author Posted February 24, 2017 In more "local" rugby, the USA is taking part in the "Americas Rugby Championship", also known as the Americas Six Nations with an Argentina fifteen, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, and Canada. They've won their first three games (including a ridiculous 51-34 tryfest in Canada against the top competition other than Argentina), and it looks like it's going to come down to a game in Argentina in the final week. Honestly, I don't expect them to win, but good to see them doing well ahead of the 2019 world cup qualifiers.
SirFozzie Posted February 25, 2017 Author Posted February 25, 2017 Hey! Scotland did it again, beating Wales, means the last two weeks features a couple title eliminators (Scotland-England, Ireland-England). So much for my prediction that Italy and Scotland would fight for the Wooden Spoon!
DangerMark Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 That Calcutta Cup match next week is a Triple Crown match for Scotland, now.
SirFozzie Posted February 26, 2017 Author Posted February 26, 2017 England get their four tries in and beat Italy, so Scotland could theoretically beat England in two weeks and still be behind england if England get the bonus point. But typical Italy, they are pretty decent for 60 minutes and then fall all to pieces in the last 20.
SirFozzie Posted March 11, 2017 Author Posted March 11, 2017 Ireland fall to Wales. So, if England win, it's all over with a round to play. If Scotland wins, they will likely move top (unless England get the bonus point), and FIVE teams could have a shot to win the title on the final day.
SirFozzie Posted March 11, 2017 Author Posted March 11, 2017 Oof. And Scotland was doing so well too. England clinch with a round to play, scoring SEVEN tries to hammer Scotland 61-21, the 61 points by england a record vs Scotland. USA actually scored a last second try and conversion to draw with Argentina 27-27, and the fourth try gave them a bonus point which gave them the title (they had 22 points to Argentina's 21)
SirFozzie Posted March 18, 2017 Author Posted March 18, 2017 That was a bizarre finish to the France-Wales game, TWENTY extra minutes thanks to ridiculousness at the end. 100th minute converted try by France beats Wales 20-18.
SirFozzie Posted March 18, 2017 Author Posted March 18, 2017 This is everything that happened after the clock went red (meaning next time Wales got the ball and got it out of bounds, game was over). We had a "injury" substitution that looks questionable, a player claim he was bitten, a player sent to the sin bin, and come back (minimum 10 minutes out), and then finally the winning score: 80 mins: France awarded a scrum. (France 13-18 Wales) 83 mins: Scrum reset for a third time. (France 13-18 Wales) 84 mins: France pop Uini Antonio goes off 'injured' to be replaced by Rabah Slimani. (France 13-18 Wales) 85 mins: Samson Lee sent to the sin-bin, Wales down to 14 men. (France 13-18 Wales) 85-93 mins: More scrums and penalties to France. (France 13-18 Wales) 93 mins: George North claims to have been bitten, reviewed by officials and deemed inconclusive. (France 13-18 Wales) 100 mins: Camille Chat drives over the line. (France 18-18 Wales) 100 mins: Camille Lopez conversion wins the game for France. (France 20-18 Wales)
SirFozzie Posted April 19, 2017 Author Posted April 19, 2017 Lions squad announced. Poor Scotland (I say that a lot, don't I?) Coach Warren Gatland has chosen 16 England players, 12 from Wales, 11 from Ireland and two from Scotland.
SirFozzie Posted May 14, 2017 Author Posted May 14, 2017 Saracens repeat as European Champs.. but spare a thought for Clermont Auvergne. They've taken part in 14 finals (11 in the French Top 14, and 3 European Finals)... and lost 13 of them.
SirFozzie Posted May 18, 2017 Author Posted May 18, 2017 Speaking of Saracens, they will be headed to the US to play an Aviva Premiership game 9/16 in Philly against Newcastle https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/may/17/saracens-newcastle-philadelphia-premiership-rugby
SirFozzie Posted June 17, 2017 Author Posted June 17, 2017 Well, there's a result no one could have expected, Scotland, having lost a couple players to the Lions, just beat Australia. IN Sydney, no less.
DangerMark Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 Not as many lost to the Lions as they should have had.
SirFozzie Posted June 17, 2017 Author Posted June 17, 2017 Yeah, I think the gist was that even if they had a full squad however, they would still be pretty much big underdogs to the Aussies in Australia
DangerMark Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 Oh, for sure. My point was that Scotland are trending definitely upwards. They should have had more Lions because they're a good team who have been playing well. Underdogs, sure but not a total shock.
SirFozzie Posted July 2, 2017 Author Posted July 2, 2017 Well, there's good news and bad news for American Rugby. The good news? They crushed Canada in the second leg of the Americas qualifying, 52-16 (their largest win EVER against Canada). This, along with a 28-28 draw in the first leg in Canada qualified them for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. http://www.rugbyworldcup.com/news/264256 The bad news? Their "reward" is being put in the Group of death with England, France, Argentina and an Oceania qualifier)
