  1. i'm going to do no research, put no thought into it, and randomly guess 1991.
  2. so, what i'm hearing that you want is DBS Jr & Billington Bulldogs vs. House of Black? edit: i would be more than OK with a Nick Aldis appearance. don't know if he'd be a good fit long-term, but i could go for a short run.
  3. there's always the NWA on YouTube as well. Tuesdays @ 6:05pm Eastern (US) time. it's a pretty breezy 45 minutes each week.
  4. NWA POWERRR! 8/8/23 @ Highland Park, IL Missa Kate vs. Ella Envy This is a "Last Chance" match, so if Envy wins the match, her team Pretty Empowered gets another shot at the tag straps, but if she loses, they will never get another chance. Envy controls much of the match, being a bit bigger and using more of the grinding wrestling type holds. Fiery comeback from Kate. Their tag partners are ringside, and that plays into the finish. A solid if unspectacular match, but i enjoyed it. Cody James vs. Anthony Andrews oof, this one was not good. Cody James looked terrible- he looks like somebody who is used to working low level local indies, as he was overacting and nothing looked natural, crisp, or legitimate. i didn't like this one at all. Magnum Muscle vs. SVGS this one, on the other hand, was really good. solid action, consistent character work, and great storytelling. since i started watching again, the SVGS have been underutilized and a highlight to me. Mims is very good as well. More of this, please. we tease Jax Dane vs. Tim Storm at NWA75. sure, why not? Odinson vs. "the Great" Zion (w/Austin Idol) Zion doesn't seem particularly interesting. He wrestled a very technical style, utilizing holds and submissions to negate Odinson's power game. Odinson coaxes the crowd to get behind him for the big comeback, which somewhat works. Odinson's explosive offense works for me (and the crowd). started off too slow but turned out pretty decent. we get a video package for Tyrus vs. EC3, which i believe is the first time Tyrus has shown up since Crockett Cup. They are having a Bullrope Match at NWA75, and if Tyrus loses, he will also retire. Well, that seems like a very quick escalation. I had to check Wikipedia, and it seems like the build is leaning heavily on their history in Impact, because it sure isn't happening here and now. Interesting choice to leave your World Champ off the show for 2 months leading into your biggest event of the year. Vampiro & La Rebelion vs. Brothers of Funstruction & Mario Pardua i still don't get the clown team. in spite of that fact, this match was OK. a jobber like Pardua teaming with the clowns was a dead giveaway to the ending, which left little intrigue. i think the clowns could work as a lower card team that relied on more comedy bits, but putting them in serious matches with the dominant champs just diminishes both teams IMO. the action was fine but didn't really accomplish anything. 2 Weeks to NWA75!
  5. for the record, i tend to feel like the "one women's match per show" is a WBD call as well, but wanted to clarify that it's not a known fact, just a reasonably suspected one. and fully agree on the need for reps (whether on TV or not) for the "greens". i would also be interested on why there's not more of that happening with said talent on the indies. a broader question, for those who follow indies more than i: how is the indy scene these days? has AEW being viable changed that in any way? are there more/fewer indies than 5 years ago? 10 years? are more/fewer shows being run on a semi-big scale? i would imagine a decently large indy that streams its content could run afoul of AEW for that reason, leading to less AEW talent on future shows.
  6. he managed a night club (strip club? i don't remember) and seems full of enthusiasm and pretty likable. i think it's fair to say he's good at running game.
  7. that is a very widely known (and mostly accepted rumor). i haven't heard anybody that would have actual knowledge mention it. If i have, please illuminate me. the "one women's match" creates a rippling effect. You imply that the talent isn't at that level yet, but how do you expect them to GET to that level? wrestling one match a month ain't gonna lead to big improvements. Here are the number of matches that each of the women's roster has had on AEW TV in 2023. [note that i don't have ROH data in front of me]: i am aware that some of those zeros are due to injury or other. but how is someone like Kiera Hogan supposed to get over or improve with only 3 matches in 8 months? She's also not one of the selected few that get promo time. Anna Jay has wrestled an average of one match a month. seriously? Toni Storm is a veritable workhorse with 18 matches in 31 weeks- a number that seems average when compared to your standard men's midcarder [Jarrett at 14, Yuta at 16] i know this speaks to the larger issue of wrestlers disappearing for weeks at a time, but when the women are only allowed to have a total of 3 matches a week, it becomes especially glaring.
  8. incentive? you mean like creating stars? generating buzz? increasing income from merch sales? diversifying your audience to accomplish all of the former? none of that is some "moral thing to do", it is about improving your bottom line. if you limit your "potential stars" to only male, you're cutting 50% of your options out. Would this "devil's advocate" position fly if it was about race? "is there any great incentive to push 'the blacks' past that it's the correct moral thing to do and fwd thinking and all that?" that's some really 1980s bullshit.
  9. forget the Bodydonnas gimmick, i would love to see a '90s partnership-turned-feud between Jannetty and Candido. we would have gotten some amazing matches out of that!! brb, now i got to check out their tv interactions: Raw 9/25/95 (Skip vs. Jannetty) Superstars 4/30/96 (Body Donnas vs. New Rockers) King of the Ring '96 [Free-For-All] (Body Donnas vs. New Rockers) Raw 7/22/96 (Body Donnas vs. New Rockers) plus some multi man tags and battle royals
  10. i'm a part of a video game forum (with a focus on collecting, although there's lots of playing going on too) and the RetroTink is very popular. i know there's different models, but haven't paid any attention to details about it.
  11. wish i could help. haven't used Hotmail in probably 15 years, and my Fire tablet i only use for reading comics.
  12. Hot Take Friday: while i like the Danzig-era Misfits (and fully admit their place in history), i find myself enjoying the '90s Only-era Misfits more. Less experimental, sure, and way less influential obviously, but i find them more fun to listen to.
  13. https://podbay.fm/p/talk-is-jericho/e/1688539500 did he only have the one daughter?
  14. yes, she does. terrific character work and audience connection. has looked great in everything i've seen her in. Wikipedia tells me "yes". i stopped watching when the promotion went on hiatus during the pandemic, and only recently returned. the only thing i saw from Cyon was the Crockett Cup match where he lost to/was replaced by (?) a different masked guy [was it Zyon? i don't understand this angle because i missed all of the build up and it hasn't been followed up on.] but the announcers were talking about this guy making his "NWA debut" so they must not count it? no wonder Aldis left.
  15. NWA POWERRR! 8/1/23 @ Highland Park, IL Chris Adonis vs. Dak Draper vs. Damage it's actually Damage this time. Adonis has shaved his scruffy beard and looks much better. Glad he took my advice. This is fine. They are telling the strength (Damage) vs. speed (Draper) vs. opportunist (Adonis). Match goes less than 5 minutes, so it doesn't do anything interesting with that dynamic past establishing it. But it's inoffensive so gets a pass from me. Submission Match: Gaagz the Gymp vs. Judais This was really dumb. match goes about 7 minutes and is basically just Judais beating on Gaagz with powerbombs and other high impact moves. Gaagz refuses to give up (because he's a sub. get it?) i challenge anyone to find a stupider submission match. Robert Anthony & Eric Jackson vs. Joe Alonzo & Fodder I'm not familiar with any of these guys, but they hyped up Robert Anthony's NWA debut here. He plays FIP for most of the match and looks good once he gets the tag (i would say "hot tag", but there wasn't much of a crowd reaction). Alonzo & Fodder actually impressed me more and i'm down to see more of them. decent little tag match here. Women's TV Title: Kenzie Paige (c) vs. Angelina Love Angelina Love is the "Psycho Girl", but Kenzie plays that role WAY better here. While i was typing that, Tim Storm makes the same point on commentary. nice. Kenzie starts off by some good stalling, trying to whittle down that 6:05 time limit. Not much action in this one. What we saw was good, but it was really built around showcasing Paige's wiliness. Koa Laxamana calls out Kerry Morton, which leads to: Koa Laxamana vs. Silas Mason Ricky Morton says that Koa doesn't want that "Morton Fever" and introduces Koa's new opponent. I guess there's a connection here between Kerry Morton, Silas Mason, and the Southern 6, but i don't really get it. oh well. Pretty much a showcase for Mason, who needed it after losing back-to-back matches to EC3. total squash, but Mason looked good here, so it accomplished what it needed to. 3 weeks to NWA75!
  16. i don't really get both companies' desire to stick to a defined timescale like that. i would much prefer it to be a lot more vague. "a few years ago", "not too long ago", etc. Let people figure out what works for them. F4 #1 came out in 1961. that's 62 years ago. You're telling me that it makes more sense to cram 62 years of history into "13" rather than leave it open ended? i disagree.
  17. look, i need somebody to tell me that i don't need to track down all of the Marvel Legends: Age of Apocalypse figures from a few years ago. there's two waves, and that's just too much, but i know that if i grab just one (Morph) or two (X-Man), then i won't be able to control myself. HELP!
  18. i just wanted to quote this to tell you that i agree 10,000%. nothing against Kidman, but you can't just drop an above average (in-ring, yet subpar on the mic) cruiserweight into a program with [the guy continuously pushed as] the greatest of all time, have him get one or two complete bullshit wins, and then bitch that the new guys "aren't getting over". Hell, Eddie Guerrero couldn't have made that feud work as it was booked, and he is fucking great at everything he does and constantly could get stuff over that otherwise wouldn't have.
  19. i would agree on the consensus as well. on my original viewing, i LOVED '96-'97, but my interest waned hard in '98 and i watched most, but not all, weeks. By Spring of '99, i was fully tuned out and migrated to WWF. On the reviewing 8(ish?) years ago, i could feel that happening as well but stuck with it. I feel like 2000 gets better earlier than that though. I can't remember when Booker T wins the World Title, but i really viewed that as a turning point, and my enjoyment went up significantly after that happened. Hell, i was even interested in the 'relaunch' and New Blood vs. Millionaires Club when that started. so much of '99-'00 were just so.... uninteresting. There can still be some good matches and even some fun angles, but so much of it goes nowhere that i just started divesting myself from caring. Nothing seemed to have any legitimate stakes or consequences. and don't get me started on heel/face alignment and allegiances!
  20. i read that Poirier had not travelled out to SLC to acclimate for this fight, so that gives me some worry. Still pulling for him and think a decision is the most likely. should be a hell of a fight either way. Ferguson apparently said recently that he thinks he's 'just entering his prime', so i don't think retirement is something he's even considering at this point. Bobby Green is a very good fighter, with flashes of greatness, but if Ferguson can't beat him, then i agree it is time to hang 'em up. looks like a pretty good card overall. looking forward to watching when i get the chance.
  21. Suggesting that visitors use one specific browser seems very 2002 to me. And especially one that is, at this point, increasingly niche. Firefox has been on a downward trend for over a decade. from Wikipedia:
  22. i would 100% listen to a 1980s Jesse Ventura podcast. Anything after 2001ish? you couldn't pay me to listen.
  23. Here's the clip from MTV. It took some looking to find the date, but it looks like it airs after the 3/16 Nitro but before the 3/19 Thunder. it's only a 2 minute segment, but worth watching. it probably gets replayed on Nitro or Thunder anyway, but here ya go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCnUpogCUNk relatedly, i just watched a clip from DDP talking about Dave Grohl being upset at how much DDP's theme song was "inspired" by Nirvana. DDP was saying that Grohl was mad, but didn't say a word when he met him in this moment. had he even heard it before it playing around him? who knows?
  24. this series did absolutely nothing for me. at all. a mildly interesting setup (i thought the same about the comics series and ended up enjoying it overall) but character motivations and relationships were just all over the place. was it worth a six episode series to have Rhodes be a skrull and Maria Hill killed off? Other than that, it didn't involve or have consequences for a single other character. Sure, they could use the "anti-Earthling act" to cause repurcussions for the Asgardians, or whoever, but that certainly doesn't make me want to watch a USA vs. New Asgard movie. too many new characters whose "reveals" and "relationships" meant nothing. the most telling was Fury's wife, who was literally never mentioned before in 15 years of movies? (ok, he made a one-line joke in one of the Captain America movies, but that obviously was not meant to have real ramifications). just made no sense at all to me. not a good show. at all. very easily my least favorite tv show to come out of Marvel Studios (i thought Moon Knight was compelling enough and didn't hate it) and the first show i have actively disliked.
  25. oh what the fuck. i don't even know how to react to this news. they also posted on facebook, in regards to a question about a fan fest, that they "have a few ideas in mind with our talent!" but i have to think that since this event happens in less than a month, that they have no idea what they are doing. perfect for a big milestone like this.
