    MLB 2014: JUNE

Justin Verlander got lit up again last night. To say he's been terrible this year would be an understatement. 6-7 with a 4.98 ERA. Zach Greinke recently went 5 billion starts in a row giving up 2 or less runs. Justin Verlander has given up 2 or more in every start this year - all 15 of them. He's given up 5+ earned runs in 6 of his last 7 starts. Combined with Mad Max being awful in his 4 starts prior to his shutout against Chicago, along with the atrocious bullpen Detroit has (AGAIN) this year, it's a miracle they're still in 1st place. The pitching the last month or so has been one long WTF.
  2. Not that the outcome would have been much different I don't think, but there were definitely stretches - sometimes long ones - where the effort from Miami was lacking.
  3. This week's PS+ update for the US: Free - Terraria (Vita) - some kind of crafting adventure game. I dunno, I don't have a Vita Discounts - lots of discounts this week, including just about all of EA's sports games, Flower, and several others.
  4. They announced several weeks ago that they would no longer have long-term titles for PS+ subscribers. Each system gets 2 games on the first of each month and then those are gone at the end of the month.
  5. Same here. I mean, it was entertaining and all but nowhere near as good as the box office and hype would indicate.
  6. Hahaha. Thank you for saying this. Anybody who's ever listened to Rick Barry talk for more than 5 minutes knows that he has an amazingly outsized opinion of himself.
  7. Wow, really? I don't think I've ever heard anyone place 2 at the bottom. Most people either have 3 (it's so stupid) or 1 (it's so slooow). Would love to hear your reasoning. I don't think I've ever heard anyone NOT put #2 at the bottom.

That's hysterical. How does a GM not understand that stuff?
  9. Jeebus man, that sucks. Glad your daughter is going to be OK.
  10. Lebron was invisible in the first half doing that "trying to get my teammates involved" thing that involved bad passes to guys less open than him. He had a very productive third but overall I thought his game was not good, let alone great.
  11. E3 Trailer for a game I've not seen mentioned anywhere before, the PS4-exclusive Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
  12. Screwing up England and the USA should count double though.
  13. My daughter is eleven now and likes movies like The Fault In Our Stars and Divergent, so I may dodge this bullet. Or not, since all I've heard this week is "When are we going to see How To Train Your Dragon 2, Dad?" The first HTTYD movie was AWESOME. And I think this trailer looks great. I might actually check it out. And, hey, Sheldon is one of the leads. That works.

That was a helluva throw by Cespedes but I'll take Bo Jackson's best or Ichiro's best over that one. Too much arc on Cespedes' throw to be at the very, very top of the elite throws,

Willie also wouldn't have misplayed the ball before making the throw.
  16. Has there been any thought to how to expand the range of cars/speed up "refueling"? Like is there a way to make the fuel cells/batteries/whatever interchangeable so you stop at a "gas station" and swap out your battery for a different one as a means of refueling?
  17. what are some of your favorites? i haven't read any, but anything that covers mid 80s to mid 90s would be what i'm interested in. In another direction, if that timeframe interests you a lot, pick up issues of Retro Gamer magazine. It's heavily UK-biased but the interviews and "making of" or "history" pieces are absolutely top-notch. The publishers have also done "bookazines" covering various systems and compiling back issues. It's the best gaming magazine since Next Generation died.
  18. Oh yeah, there are also books dedicated to the creation of the Xbox, the 360 and the Playstation. I've read the Xbox one and it's very good. Haven't read the 360 one yet and haven't bought the Playstation one yet ($$$). I imagine we'll see PS2/PS3/PS4/Wii/Xbone books before too long.
  19. The preview shot of this video is why I made the "plastic skin" comment in the E3 thread on this title. Ugh.
  20. what are some of your favorites? i haven't read any, but anything that covers mid 80s to mid 90s would be what i'm interested in. The discussion starts with the best of 'em all: The Ultimate History of Video Games by Steven Kent 600+ pages of awesome. A must-own for any video game fan that can read. Others: Replay by Tristan Donovan - Heavily focused on the European game market, which a lot of Americans aren't all that familiar with. Has an incredibly bad cover design but is a great book. Phoenix by Leonard Herman - Outstanding semi-early work on the industry. Good luck finding a reasonably-priced copy. Hackers by Steven Levy - This one covers the history of the computer industry, going way back, but has lots of great stuff on early game companies like Broderbund, Sierra, and others. Jacked by David Kushner - Pretty good book covering the creation of the Grand Theft Auto series. And then, of course, Console Wars. There are lots more I still need to get. The book on Ocean being a foremost one I still need to get.
  21. I loved how that story ended up, with the Pistons and their total lack of superstars just crushing the Lakers.
  22. Yes! That movie was great. Sooooooo much better than you expect based on the synopsis and cast. Semi-true story, too.
