    2014 G1 Climax

I really love Honma. Even if you don't like his ring work, it's hard not to get pulled into his matches because the crowd is just waiting for him to get one big upset in the tournament. It's going to be huge if/when he does. That Ishii match, as a result, was my favorite thus far. Also, I came into the tournament ready to fastforward through the Shelton Benjamin matches since he really hasn't done much for me so far, but that said, he's been pretty slick. I'm interested to see him take on some of the bigger names to see if he can deliver a gem. AJ Styles has also been great. I have not been a fan of Bullet Club, but it seems they've cooled off either in the G1 or post-Devitt on the annoying-level interference. AJ's really adapted well to the New Japan style; I really liked his match was Naito and the match with Okada from Night 1 was also a lot of fun.
  2. I just got home from this show, I wouldn't be too excited for Jericho/Orton. Maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea though. On the other hand, Bo Dallas was phenomenal. Reigns/Rusev was...slow. I was surprised that they let Reigns get to the point where he was just about to finish him with the Spear. i was sure they would do a couple of power spots back and forth and then Kane comes in. The Usos thing was one of them doing 'commentary' while the other pantomimed the match. I thought it was kind of amusing actually.
  3. Ambrose was super over by the end of the ladder match, I know he was always the one people 'knew' would make it, but he's making it work well. It's refreshing to see him just try to pummel Rollins and not 'wrestle' him at all. I'm surprised not many people are mentioning Rusev/Big E, that was a pretty great match! Between the knee blocking the first spear, the speak to the outside where Big E nearly killed himself and the Rusev kick I think it was about a tie for my favorite match of the night with the MITB match. Main event was very underwhelming. I didn't really see an outcome going in that would please me, and as it turns out the one they picked did not.
  4. I'm totally ok with goofyness, as long as there's some kind of precedent. Invisible choke slam only works for me if he's doing some kind of Green Lantern gimmick and they add a glowing green hand in post.
  5. I am so glad that someone made a gif of this. I can't tell you how much I laughed when I saw this on the Memphis DVDs. And just in time for Friday the 13th!
  6. Worth noting that, after the show went off the air, it came back on, with all the heels coming out. This included a huge guy in a gas mask, with wires and stuff, marching out Soldier Ant and Delerious with hoods over their heads. When they took them off they attacked the Colony and Ultramantis respectively. Everyone brawled and the huge guy did a chokeslam/backbreaker on Kobald that seemed to imply he was done for awhile. I thought the show was really fun, not their best, but solid. All ant match was especially good.
  7. Was it just me, or was that whole RVD/Cesaro match pretty off? Not just the wrestling, but the camera was cutting away at weird times and, at least in Canada, they cut off heyman's promo walking down, brought it back, then cut it off again. Plus, that ending...did the ref think that Cesaro just got tired and took a nap? "Huh, he fell down...guess I better count as quick as I can". On the other hand, Barrett/Sheamus was pretty good. Loved the ending with the Bullhammer from the outside.
  8. Just saw the preview for the first episode. Noticed at the end that Hacksaw was PRETTY quick working that blender...
  9. I wrote a little something in my blog in my signature, but basically, whatever you may have thought of him before the last few days, he really seemed like a good guy. I thought he was crazy, and he may be a bit crazy, but it seemed like he came to terms with a lot of stuff and made amends with a lot of people on Wrestlemania weekend. I'm glad he had the opportunity, and I'm glad all his fans had the chance to give one last goodbye.
  10. I'm sure Cesaro is winning this easy, but I love Nakamura and I had to give him my vote. He wins based on sleeze and entertainment factor while opening card games.

  12. You can get all the downloads with silver, but if you want to play online or download creations, yeah, you're going to have to get a gold membership. I'm hoping for a free weekend or something because dropping 30+ bucks just for creations isn't really enticing to me.
  13. I was about to specifically ask if Savage's jump-over-the-top-neck snap was in. Sad news. And yeah, the elbow isn't perfect, but both of those things being said, I actually enjoyed my brief session playing the game so far. The AI is pretty good, and it feels like it flows a lot better than in the past. The last one I played was WWE 12 and this is a huge step up from that. Thus far, I'm not disappointed and am looking forward to jumping in to Universe Mode and grabbing some edits.
  14. That's good to know. Hope so. I agree about the floaty moves. I've been wishing they would re-do all the moves going back years as it looks like there were 2-3 different visions for how moves should look. There's a few moves that are really simple, smooth and nothing fancy, then there's all the ridiculous sell moves complete with bouncing 3 ft in the air after the impact, and then there's the holdovers from the very first game (eg. the backdrop that's been in forever that looks like they've never re-animated it). It's one of the things that really bothers me about the series. That and that I had to edit Mason Ryan so he'd stop doing running German Suplexes while I was squashing him with Mark Henry 2 years ago...
  15. Hogan's moveset looked better 3-4 years ago than it does in this game. Also, I'm always impressed at how they put in some moves I wouldn't expect, except not quite right. Like Bryan's Regal-plex he used in Japan is in, but it's a release version. It's like they've never played Fire Pro!
  16. Those toss-in-the-air finishers look really awful and possibly defiant of gravity and physics. The trailer made me consider whether the Macho Man and his distinct colour schemes are actually worth it...
  17. Well, yeah, but they'd probably also have to pay Shamrock for his likeness then, and it's not like he fits into the whole "Legendary Wrestlemania Matches" schtick they're doing this year. Anyway, it'll be fun when the generic ref suplexes Hart off of Austin, you know it.
  18. I'm hoping there's a downloadable moveset shortly after release of a crying WMD for Big Show, possibly with a full minute of will he/won't he drama. I would put down 1600 Microsoft Points for that.
  19. I'm pretty much going to buy this now because there's at least 4 different Macho Man costumes.
  20. The guy Ryback beats up is none other than Archibald Peck!
  21. To be fair, a lot of us are sofa-cushion black belts who know that he shoulda GOT THAT ANKLE UNDER HIS KNEE. I can't imagine it bothered the live crowd. Is it any worse that Brock's insistence on doing Kimuras from half guard on the bottom? Half guard on the bottom is actually a pretty good place to do a Kimura from. Thought for Pro Wrestling purposes it probably doesn't look as good. I never really got why in wrestling they refuse to do the triangle fully, since it's not like just putting your ankle in the right place makes it SUPER tight. Anyway, I imagine on Brock's giant shoulders it would be tough. While I don't think Bryan as champ would be 'boring' by any means, I think he's far more interesting chasing the title. I'm totally cool with it taking till Wrestlemania.
  22. I had a great time watching the G1 Climax this year; the fact that I could watch each day as it happened makes my former waiting-for-a-VHS self envious. I really only picked back up into New Japan this year, and I never really 'got' Naito. He looks like Robert Gibson had a good night on a Japanese tour in the 80's, and I could see his offense as some sort of 2013 RnR comeback. Anyway, I thought he was midcard and as a result the final really didn't do much for me. Then again, it took me awhile to come around on Tanahashi too. Okada has such a weird moveset. I don't mind the tombstone set up because I can easily adjust to the Japan logic, but his submission(s) really could use some re-thinking. I thought Shibata and Ishii both stood out, but man Kojima really had a great run. I had slept on his stuff for a long time now but he was excellent throughout. Lastly, I never ever thought I would say that Lance Archer wasn't the worst guy in it, but now I'd actually even say he wasn't too bad.
