The more I think about it, the more I think that Cross being sort of a sad sack villain was fine because the real antagonist of the piece were the characters' own failings as human beings.

I'll take the Waid/Kesel style of DD over the Miller style anyday and that doesn't even get into the decades of people trying to recreate it and the sheer amount of damage he caused second-hand by inspiring all of the dreck of the Jemas/Quesada era in marvel. Years of good comics lost there because people got back into comics in the early 80s due to his Daredevil being kewl after dropping it for girls in their teen years. (almost every interview with a creator during that period said exactly that; that's just Marvel too)
