  1. Whataburger has a honey butter chicken biscuit for breakfast that's really damn good, and they even started selling the honey butter in grocery stores.
  2. I remember he had the first or second really good Goldberg match (depending on whether we count the Regal potato/sandbag match).
  3. I started watching Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter last night. I stopped after 15 minutes and deleted it from my DVR. Last time I did anything like that was back in the day when I rented Batman and Robin.
  4. I am one who thinks that some people do get too easily offended and are looking for something to be outraged about. But it seems reasonable to me for Native Americans to express their wish not to be seen as mascots and offended by their use as such. Especially when you think of things like Chief Wahoo, people in redface, and shit like the Tomahawk Chop and chant.
  5. To some people, it's the only offensive part. To many others, the whole concept of a Native American mascot is offensive. Check out #NotYourMascot.
  6. It's interesting to get the perspective from people who love big festivals and festival bands.
  7. "Greetings to the New Brunette" I'll toss in a vote for "To Have and To Have Not". Titus Andronicus did an awesome cover of this last time I saw them.
  8. This US team seems more built for 2018, but I generally liked what I saw in the warm-up games. I think our goalkeepers are strong enough to make up a bit for our questionable backline, and the injuries to our Group opponents also help a bit. That said, we'll need at least 4 points to make it out of Group, and most have that possibility as beating Ghana, tying Portugal, not losing badly to Germany, and hoping that Germany beats the shit out of Ghana and Portugal (for goal differential). Is this realistic? I think so, but every point is going to be hard to come by and we could just as easily bow out 0-3.
  9. I was too old for Reading Rainbow (totally Sesame Street kid here) but I have a half-sister who is 17 years younger than me. One day back in the early 90s I was watching with her and they showed one of the "in-school" segments and I started thinking that the kids looked really really familiar. I realized that it was a bunch of kids who I went to school with in 6th-8th grade at a small private school in New York City, but back when they were in maybe 3rd grade. Watching the credits confirmed it. Anyway, as someone who hopes to someday have a sprog of my own, I'm psyched that it's coming back.
  10. Y'all just need to watch the Spurs commercials for HEB, the greatest grocery store in the world. ESPN blog with links to the seven best Spurs HEB commercials.
  11. Because I saw them back in 1992 at their height of their career and they were disappointing and somewhat lifeless. Honestly, both House of Pain and Ice T blew them away at that show.
  12. That's a fairly accurate description. (edited to add link to a Houston Press blog post that covers it, with links to Transmission Statement, and video) (edited to remove a Steregum link that won't work) He spent all day being a total diva dick, as you stated, possibly to hold out for more money although I've never heard Transmission directly state that. The famous story is that he said the weather was too cold and he wouldn't perform without french onion soup, so they had to send someone out to go find someplace that had it. This is fact, a friend of mine was the guy who got sent out and mentioned it on FB while it was happening. I would really, really, really love to talk to your friend about this. Oh my god, that must have been the most amazing conversation. "He wants WHAT?" Looks like he deleted the stuff from his timeline, dammit! He plays in Criaturas, so if you go see them you can ask. Of course, he was just the guy who got sent. The blog post has a copy of the original FB post by Transmission with the hilarious and sad timeline.
  13. Really looking forward to that Lower album (and the Boris). Lower played at Chaos in Tejas 2013. I caught them at the same show where The Men played their amazing set. Bought two 7"s from Lower, one of which is a split with Iceage. They sound pretty similar, and maybe have at least one member of Iceage?
  14. That's a fairly accurate description. This is fact, a friend of mine was the guy who got sent out and mentioned it on FB while it was happening. The set itself was Danzig Legacy, they started 45 minutes late (I actually gave up and went and caught a surprisingly amazing Public Enemy set), and did their Danzig and Samhain sets (story above said they were listless, I caught the last Samhain song and it was eh). Then, at 9:50, he finally brought Jerry and Doyle to start The Misfits set. They manage to get two songs in and then the sound guys tell him the set is over due to the sound ordinance. He gets on the mic and tries to get the crowd to demand that they keep the sound on, but everyone is pissed because they fucked around so long. He starts trying to get people to riot and jump fences and no one goes for it. It was hilarious watching him fail. Thing is, back a few years before when Danzig (the band) played, they did some of the same shit starting late and playing past curfew so he KNEW what the deal was. And the Ted Leo set was magnificent.
  15. No NCAA school puts player names on jerseys for current players. That's against the rules. What they do, and have always done, is seller jerseys with current player numbers but no names. This announcement by 3 schools means they will stop that practice - and just use unissued numbers (like 12 for A&M). Also a nod to the cult of the 12th Man there.
  16. The new Parquet Courts album Sunbathing Animal comes out today. Here's a youtube link to the first single, of the same name. I actually got a limited edition advance-release copy of the album with a screened cover and have listened to it a few times, I think it might be better than Light Up Gold. Still has a garagey no wave sound.
  17. Powell Books is a must-see, as OSJ mentions. Massive store with great selection. I also recommend spending a few minutes in their ultra-fancy rare books room, almost like a museum. There are lots of brewpubs downtown, I can't even remember all of the ones I went to but I do remember that Deschutes had good beer and good food. You'll definitely want to stop by Ground Kontrol (http://groundkontrol.com/), a classic video games arcade with a bar. If you're a music fan...well I wasn't very impressed with the record stores I went to downtown. One interesting place to eat, with good food, is The Kennedy School (http://www.mcmenamins.com/427-kennedy-school-home). It's a nice (but fairly reasonably priced) restaurant and bar in an old school building.
  18. Thanks to whoever bumped this thread, looking forward to reliving many good matches from the old days of the CULT OF WORLDWIDE~! when I'm not at work. Pretty sure many of these matches earned the coveted FULL WORDLWIDE~! POINT.
  19. Great record, and Different Days is a killer song that is even better live. They did a show last year at a small venue during Chaos in Tejas that was one of the top 5-10 shows I've ever seen; I hadn't been blown away like that in years. You could see the band felt the same way, and the drummer just slid off his stool and sat with his back against the wall in a daze for a minute after the set ended.
  20. I'm actually a desk jockey about 80% of the year now. And I still hate snakes.
  21. Yep, I still am Tomorrow is my 10-year anniversary of being a professional archaeologist. Only change is I got a new cushy state job about a year ago. There might be local archaeology organizations you could join to get involved in small projects and hear lectures.
  22. Wonder if I can revive this thread at all... Living in Austin, there's always something I *could* go see, but age and budget are definitely limits to this. I'm also not nearly as vested in the local music scene as I once was, also due in part to age and budget. Right now, shows I would like to see in the next couple of weeks include Red Fang, Big Business, and American Sharks tonight, Floor and Parquet Courts (separate parts of same venue, with separate tickets) next Thursday, and Protomartyr next Friday. Unfortunately, I can only afford to go to one, so it'll be Protomartyr as I haven't seen them before and heard a lot of good things about them at/after SXSW. Last month I saw The Men (who are my favorite current band) and Cloud Nothings. The Men were great as always, very drony and noisy and did a 40 minute set that felt like 20 and left me wanting more. Cloud Nothings are now very popular with the college set, so I stood back and let them have their fun.
  23. This is actually Girl Talk's third time at FFF. First time was in 2006 or so and was really fun, pretty small. Headlined a couple years back and it had turned into giant teenage EDM shitshow. For blue stage, I would see Nas and Gary Numan and maybe Run the Jewels.
  24. I figure I'll piggyback on Naimark's "I Have Returned" post to say: "Hello! I'm Back!" Damned if I can remember what my old ID was, I know my avatar was a photo of Vince Young kissing the MNC crystal football. That's all. Carry on.
  25. Finally got back on here after forever (and waiting for new site login). Went back a few pages to see what people said about the Charlie Strong hire at UT, wish I had been around then to talk about my Horns!
