  1. I guess now I understand why so many dudes are super excited about this character and movie. eta: I thought about this and this sounds insulting. I don't intend it that way, I just am not a comic book reader and haven't really understood the excitement. To me, honestly, it looks dumb and trying way too hard to be edgy.
  2. Well, there's nothing wrong with feeling sad sometimes. And Grave of the Fireflies is important subject matter and a really valuable perspective on a major world event.
  3. Grave of the Fireflies. I've seen it once. Someday I'll see it again, if I can be surrounded by a herd of baby goats to cheer me up.
  4. I just don't like Green. I was an REM fan and I liked "Orange Crush" then the whole album came out and it didn't really do anything for me. Really, the only thing by them I've liked from that point on is "Nightswimming". I'm not a Bouncing Souls fan. I grew up listening to the first two albums and then fell off and thought they were really friggin' dumb. But then I heard THE GOLD RECORD well after the fact and that album is so insanely great. It's a total hidden gem. The Souls get lumped into Warped Tour-type bands that are dismissed critically. It's a shame because if some random band no one ever heard of dropped The Gold Record, people would have bugged the hell out for it. It's super. Your Bouncing Souls experience is like mine, except I've never revisited them. Guess I'll check that album out.
  5. Lots of interesting choices here, reflecting a wide spectrum!
  6. I love Bandwagonesque (and It's a Shame about Ray, I used to be able to sing the whole thing cover to cover from memory). Judgment Night is something that for years I would remember as this awesome thing and wish that I hadn't sold my copy. Then a few months back I got on Spotify to show my girlfriend how amazing it was and...it hasn't aged well for me, at all. Only truly listenable tracks for me now are TFC/De la, Dinosaur Jr/Del, and Mudhoney/Mix-a-Lot
  7. Honestly, while I really like Fugazi a lot I've never truly gotten into anything after In on the Kill Taker. The Prince mention caused me to feel dumb for overlooking my all-time favorite artist, Stevie Wonder, and his run of Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingess' First Finale, and Songs in the Key of Life. I would even stretch that back to include Where I'm Coming From and Signed, Sealed, Delivered.
  8. Not much of a Beatles fan, and mainly early stuff, so I would stop after Revolver regardless. My initial thoughts were The Cure, but I can't find anything better than Head on the Door through Wish. Likewise, New Order has their first four albums but I just can't hang with Technique. I mean, I could probably compromise in order to have my four faves from each, but that's not the point of the discussion Thinking more, of course there's The Ramones, up through End of the Century. Zeppelin's first 5 albums. Maybe the Pogues, depending on your feelings about Hells Ditch. My friend used Springsteen, who could legitimately be stretched IMO to 7 albums, through Born in the USA.
  9. One of my friends asked this question on Twitter: If you could only listen to 5 albums for the rest of your life, and they had to be by the same artist AND consecutive releases, who/what would it be?
  10. Trying to remember the last time I cared less about The Big Game.
  11. Good for the players if they decide to do that, considering how much money everyone else makes off the meat-grinder.
  12. All I can think is Fox going "Oh shit, we'll have to go up against Star Wars VIII"... (grabs phone)..."Hey James, take your time".
  13. Yes, and I didn't really think it was very good or very funny. Barely held my attention. On a related note, this great article from yesterday made me think about Office Space in a new way and now I really want to rewatch it. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/01/corporations-free-marketing-instagram/423465/
  14. I prefer the Pac 12 for UT for a variety of reasons (culture, climate, academics being the main 3), but fear of the competition isn't one of them. SEC is not a fit culturally in ever so many ways, and the B1G would be a huge problem for non-revenue sports (as well as baseball). And once Colt McCoy was knocked out of the 2009 NCG game, Mack Brown checked out, and the rot just festered and festered. We'll be back soon.
  15. thank goodness, otherwise someone might try and add 2 more teams to this dead end to try and keep it going instead of just letting it run its course through the end of the current TV contracts and then blow up.
  16. Haven't seen it yet, but I am heartened by this. My main issue with Wolf of Wall St is when Belfort starts explaining what he was doing, then cuts himself off and says something along the lines of "...but you don't really care about any of that." Actually, I do. I left the movie without any clue as to what it was that he actually did and what was so wrong about it, other than "Wall St is shady." For the purposes of The Wolf of Wall Street, Belfort's actions are insignificant. Scorcese really takes some things that really happened and raised them to 11. I don't think his intent was to give an accurate depiction on Belfort as much as it was to make a commentary on the corrupting power of money and the excesses of American life when someone who has a dark side is given that much money. Speaking of Leo. I was just reading this fun article about The Revenant that I think hits the nail on the head. I am curious to experience the film visually so will probably see it today, but my expectations of it being an enthralling film are quite low. http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2015/12/28/i-dont-care-how-hard-it-was-to-make-the-revenant I saw The Revenant yesterday, and my initial impression was that it was a very beautiful movie that was too long, with a lot of story flaws. The article linked above really crystallized my thoughts on the film and many of my problems with it. I also had an issue with how superhuman DiCaprio's character is, while at the same time being very stupid. And for a movie that was supposed to be about cold and suffering (even though it's never really clear how cold it is, since at times there is ice thawing on trees but not on Leo's beard), the only time it really came in to play was so they could have the "shocking" real-life Tauntaun scene. Much like Birdman, I think it's really overhyped and the more I think about it, the less I like it.
  17. It's very true to the book, and the Mark Watney character is a very smart, sometimes slightly douchey guy who tends to relate to people by busting their balls and deals with his situation with a lot of gallows humor.
  18. Have seen, and would see again (but probably not in a festival setting outside of FunFunFun): M83, Savages, Ice Cube, CHUVRCHES, The Damned, Alvvays, Run the Jewels (they're more a "saw 'em, would see them at a fest if nothing better was against them), Deafheaven, the Vandals Want to see (but not in a festival setting except maybe FunFunFun): The Kills, Mavis Staples, Grimes, Sheer Mag, Lush, Ex Hex, and maybe Sia and Beach House I've also seen/heard bits of Purity Ring, Rae Sremmurd, BADBADNOTGOOD, Edward Sharpe et al., at festivals and didn't care.
  19. I only ever saw the first trailer (several times) and after that did everything I could to avoid any additional teasers/trailers/commercials/spoilers. Like I wouldn't even look at the merchandise. I'm really glad that I did, made it so much better to know almost nothing.
  20. LOL. I'd hate to be the one had to explain to them that "We foolishly rushed to overpay a guy based on the play of one transcendent QB and now regret it horribly" does not consitute "with cause." Surely you've seen the video of Sumlin so drunk he can't walk being carried to his hotel room by 2 dudes? It was leaked after the Ole Miss game, but supposedly is from 2 years ago. Anyway, with what happened with Sark, they may go the same route, and rumor has it they've been sitting on stuff like this, and worse, *just in case*.
  21. Speedy Noil is also possibly/probably being suspended for 2 games and also possibly/probably transferring. Going deeper into rumors, some of the big money guys (and maybe the admin) might make a run at Sumlin to fire him with cause and void his ~$18 million contract buyout.
  22. Thanks to OBJ I ended up losing by only 6/10 of a point, which I think is actually worse than getting crushed due to my multiple player injuries this past week.
  23. All week long, I was agonizing over Dalton vs. Bortles. Both were projected for roughly the same point total (I think Bortles was 20.5 v 20 for Dalton). My gut said Bortles, but Dalton was given the higher matchup rating, and he'd gotten me this far. Should've gone with my gut. Also had Eifert and Yeldon starting. Brutal week, especially in the playoffs.
  24. He's interested in OU. Also some rumblings that Kyler Murray may transfer. Of course, the situation here in Austin is a shitshow too...
