  1. "Flatline" was great. Last few have been really enjoyable. And despite his Debbie Downer attitude, it was nice to see the Doctor being a do-gooder again.
  2. Just send him a similar message: "Dear cuz, thanks for your message. You are in my thoughts as well. Please know that I hope you will acknowledge the utter falsity of your religion, and know you will one day."
  3. That was great, but Jesus, they have to get a new guy to do the score. It's just incredibly intrusive.
  4. It's too bad Richard Ayoade is a terrible actor. He'd fit perfectly into the 10-11 Doctor mould of cute, nerdy guy with eccentric hair. He'll just have to continue being a great director. If they want to diversify Who, how about Kayvan Novak? PS - Capaldi is pretty much the best.
  5. Canadian Doctor Who would have been Louis Del Grande. And ya'll would have loved it.
  6. My favourite of this season so far. "Ludicrous premise" isn't really a critique that holds water for Doctor Who. Excited for a Doctor solo episode next week. Edited to add: admittedly, the fact that people are now talking abortion and Doctor Who has made me reconsider my fondness for the episode.
  7. Not really a gadget question, but I couldn't find a better thread. Can anyone suggest a free program or website that "grabs" audio off of video sources? A google search turns up a lot, but it's hard to tell what's trustworthy.
  8. Had to ask my neighbours not to throw darts at my fence. I mean, shit.
  9. Waiting with my wife in emerg. It's 4 am. She has kidney stones, which we knew about and are to be dealt with next week, but they moved tonight and caused her a ton of pain. We both have work in a few hours. Blerg.
  10. I could have done without the spoon-fighting though. He should of been all *FLIP!* "Venusian Akido, gentlemen!" So far it seems like the series is very calculated based on mood. "Into the Dalek": This is a new, darker Doctor. "Robot of Sherwood": But not that dark. The kids can still watch. "Listen": But seriously, it is dark.
  11. So you're intent on having GHOST WORLD knock out the remainder of the good films in the first rounds, aren't you?
  12. Second episodes for all the New Doctors have been pretty lacklustre. Capaldi's is easily the best, even if I'm not particularly high on it. I do love that he was carrying coffee throughout the first scene.
  13. Peter Capaldi is so good he made that lame mind-meld part almost work almost.
  14. I had to look up whouffle. Not happy about it.
  15. Stop trying to make sense of Doctor Who, y'all,
  16. Yeah I think you're supposed to go off the idea that she was attached to Matt Smith, not that she didn't believe/couldn't cope with regeneration.
  17. Daleks are rough, though--they're awesome villains, but they're really, really hard to write episodes for. Really, aside from the very best Dalek episodes, most of them are mediocre or bad. I think they're handled best when everyone is absolutely terrified of them, though. IMO, they just need to do an ALIEN-style Dalek episode, with one to three Daleks and a very small space with a few well-written, supporting characters. Like, a smaller space and character list than the "Dalek" episode (which I loved). Maybe not a "space" location either. Really present them as horror villains. The highs were higher under RTD, but the lows were way lower than they were under Moffat. Anyway, I agree with the idea that the showrunner should be some non-Whovian.
  18. It wasn't great, but I ain't mad at it. The new theme might take some getting used to. Every new season I find the score invasive and actively detracting from the show. I don't think it gets toned down, either. I think I just get used to it.
  19. Awesome: I was hired to teach a course at a local university. Oh shit: it starts in one week, and it's an upper-level theory course I have to prepare from scratch. So all new course plan, lectures, and the class probably won't have textbooks for the first week or two. But at least I'm teaching.
  20. In a way, one of the things that is fun about a new Doctor is that everyone starts comparing him to their "ideal"(ish) Doctor, the one that every single instance of the Doctor is supposedly an interpretation of. In that way, I can see how you'd have an idea of what the Doctor is "really" like, even if it doesn't match up to how any particular actor has actually played him.
  21. Man, I' gonna have to resist the urge to read Who reviews for the current season. I've read a few objections to Doctor potentially pushing the robot. I'll use the review from Twitch as my example: Uh, David Tennant killed a dude in his first episode, and it wasn't to save humanity: it was to be a total badass. Then he went and concocted punishments for the Family Blood which would have made Greek Gods shudder. Matt Smith wipes out an entire species to save Venice, and then spends like 1000 years on Trenzalore defending a tiny village by killing every motherfucker who looks at him sideways. And his potential for violence isn't exactly new: for shits and giggles, Sylvester McCoy tricked Davros into blowing up Skaro. Pushing a robot to save a bunch of his friends, if it happened, shouldn't really rate. I realize I'm generalizing here, but some people seem to hold this show to a standard to which it has never held itself.
  22. I never got the impression that Odell's proposition was legit. It has been a while since I watched it, but I thought it was presented as a pretty straightforward con.
