  1. As far as QT goes, I always liked him as a mid-card heel. Good wrestler, good talker, pretty entertaining in the right role. My first thought was he's probably going to WWE but we shall see. If he left because he thought AEW needed to be more "entertainment" than "New Japan", c ya! It's already been going in that direction and it sucks. I've said it before but there's a level of silliness and comedy and goofiness that I love in wrestling that AEW has managed to pull off really well at times, but I'm not a fan of the sports entertainment WWE/TNA stuff that, based on QTV, he is If he left because he wanted a bigger push, again, don't see him any higher than midcard in AEW. I think WWE is probably a better place for him anyway, he'd be a great midcard heel there and probably a better fit without the baggage he already has in AEW where a lot of fans just don't want to see him at all
  2. Thanks for bringing up The Owen. Owen was one of my all-time favorites, loved KOTR back in the day, should have been right up my alley. And yet I didn't care about either tournament because they didn't do anything to make me care. Slapping Owen's name on an underwhelming tournament isn't enough. And likewise, Tony had that "put your money where your mouth is" comment about the CC tourny, like "this is what you guys want, I'm booking this for you, don't make me regret it!" in a totally self-defeating way IMO. I'm not really into this tournament yet for a lot of reasons, a big one being that it's just getting thrown out there at a time where wins and losses have seemed to matter less than at any time in the company and there's already too many belts for me to keep track of. Too much product as well. If this is the start of a shift, great! But you can't expect everyone who's been down on the product to just be magically 100% on board again because you threw a G1 style tournament at them
  3. If you're trying to establish this new triple crown as a real big deal (and Tony talks about how historic it is having a title representing 3 promotions, so they should), Danielson should win and be the first champion
  4. Watched this on a whim, lazy Saturday post Thanksgiving nothing better to do. This was the first WWE show I've watched since WM. Didn't watch it live but I stayed off the internet. Wasn't expecting Punk to show up in the slightest. I was so caught off guard after a night of annoying 'CM Punk' chants in several matches and peppered throughout the main that I didn't even have a reaction to it other than, "huh, I guess this is happening" Was curious if it got leaked before/during the show but after reading this thread I guess it didn't. Personally I don't watch WWE outside of the occasional big show and I'm not a Punk fan so this doesn't really affect me, I'll just grab some popcorn. Can't think of any matches I'd want to see him in, I was over Punk in AEW. It does make AEW look real bad to casual fans when they sign a bunch of "castoffs" and old guys and the superstar aura main eventers like Cody, Punk and possibly Jade are the ones leaving to go to WWE, perception wise. Thought the show was average, but I did some fast forwarding during video packages and the Miz match that made it easier to watch. I didn't think the Wargames matches were particularly good or bad, just kind of there. You don't want to take your eye off them because lots of stuff happens, yet they were both kind of boring. Thought Santos and Dragon Lee would be better given what a big spot it was for them. I liked Gunther beating Miz with a Liontamer after the announcers pointed out Miz was attempting to tie Jericho with his 9th IC title win. The moronic fans chanting for tables incessantly was annoying the shit out of me. I loved Sabu but I'm starting to think he left a horrible legacy on the business by popularizing the table spot. It's not even cool anymore and hasn't been in decades!!! Don't get why fans do it, and why of all things tables are what they want to see. At least in AEW last week they were chanting for FIRE!!!
  5. there was a brawl at Kowloons https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12790433/customers-brawl-restaurant-Massachusetts-Thanksgiving-Eve.html insert a Haku joke here
  6. Man, I'd forgotten all about the TNA round robin. Didn't it go on for months and they had to make up fake results to make it make sense? I always go with Russo's 99 World Title tournament as the "at least it can't be as bad as this" example
  7. I'm gonna be the wet blanket. This feels super rushed, the title/triple crown is out of nowhere, Bryan who can't get out of a match healthy these days would have to wrestle 7 matches in a month if he goes to the finals, and he's supposed to wrestle Okada on Jan. 4. I want to be optimistic about this but it screams bad idea on multiple levels and I don't understand the rush to do it now. Don't get me wrong, I've been wanting to see a tournament like this since AEW started but this wasn't the best way to go about it. I also don't have much faith in Tony's waffle house napkin booking right now. I'm still looking forward to it and happy to be proven wrong. Maybe Tony's had this planned forever, it'll be a great intricately booked layered tournament full of awesome matches and he makes his late push for booker of the year! He's at least off to a good start promising no interference
  8. I liked Skye Blue's old theme. Good Daft Punk vibes Alvarez has pointed this out a few times now but I was thinking it myself watching the show. Tony Khan in kayfabe is a complete lunatic. Adam Cole isn't cleared to defend the ROH tag titles but he OK's him replacing MJF in the main event? If Tony is going to be used like this as the matchmaker/owner, to explain away the nonsensical booking I want them to lean into him being kayfabe off the rails. Like that segment where he was screaming at MJF and Cole behind closed doors and "normal" Tony when the cameras are on. All his detractors think he's a coked up goofball anyway, lean into it like the Mr. McMahon character but instead of an evil megalomanic he's a schizo weirdo who loves rasslin more than anyone on the planet Hangman and Swerve was incredible. Between that and the Hell of War match for a guy who's not exactly known as a deathmatch wrestler he's been in two of my favorites. AEW has had some pretty wild and bloody matches, I'm not sure this was the most violent because I think I've cringed more at some Mox stuff, but it was up there. The crowd did not know how to react to the blood drinking-->mist spot. I was laughing my ass off and screaming FUCK YEAH!! Then I see some people were disgusted by it? Oh well. I was a little worried about 50/50 booking going into this but I thought they pulled it off perfectly with Hangman getting his pound of flesh and then some and Swerve just barely surviving with just a bit of outside help I'm not really a fan of multi-person ladder matches at this point, all I can think of while watching them is how it's impossible to come out of these matches unscathed and nobody will remember it a week later. I'm guessing guys like FTR, Ricky and Black would prefer not to be in a match like this, maybe I'm wrong. They were doing all the dives early in the match with everybody catching and talking to each other on the landing and it just felt like every other multi-person match to me. It got better as it went along and there were some crazy spots, but I'd rather they save ladder matches for once in a blue moon when they have a creative idea to get to it or for the match itself MJF is fucking insane doing that elbow. Good match, didn't need the angle, felt super WWE from bygone days. I'm a big Jay White fan, I never expected him to win and he's gonna be just fine. Juice is on the shelf now though, that might cool down some of BCG's momentum if he isn't on TV. I'd be down for several weeks of TV of them recruiting a new member. Maybe a heel turn for Action? I also wasn't expecting a devil reveal going into the show, it hadn't been built up enough on TV yet. I was kinda thinking Cole heel turn fingerpoke of doom with Jay White was possible though, so they at least had me guessing a little with the angle.
  9. I bought Doggystyle on cassette on the down low and somehow my mom found it and confiscated it. Now he's selling fire pits. What a world
  10. Kathleen Hanna! Bull in the Heather! AEW doing their own version of the G1 for Bryan is cool. Bryan rushing back for it where he's almost guaranteed to get hurt again and put the Okada rematch in jeopardy, not so much. I've been wanting them to do something like this for a while. I'm worried about who ends up in it based on Tony's track record with tournaments and such. I also don't have as much faith in Tony getting the intricate booking right as I might have a couple years ago. Hopefully it isn't full of run ins and distractions... a field of 12 off the top of my head, all AEW guys:
  11. There's already too many titles, but there's definitely too much talent kinda aimless with no direction too It would be solved by going back to more of the "real sports presentation" they used to talk about. They should have stuck with the win-loss records and standings. Too tough to track it/book it? Bullshit. Also, do more tournaments for title shots, do a G1 style round robin, young lions, whatever. Also need more organic personal issues between wrestlers to give them a reason to fight, it doesn't have to be super sports entertainmenty. But if you need to do, "he stole my sponsorship!" that's fine. And related to that, more of an emphasis on the pay windah in regards to wins/losses/title shots. It's pro-wrestling. It's pretty fucking simple.
  12. I'm not enjoying AEW's conversion into TNA 2.0
  13. Am I crazy to think it's going to be The Kingdom? MJF gets a call from Cole who convinces him to give Roddy and the boys a chance. They fail and it plays into Cole's turn down the line. It's all leading up to MJF accepting The Acclaimed's help but I don't think they're going there yet
  14. I'm in the minority of AEW fans who listens to and generally enjoys the Cornette pods. I've been thinking about writing a post about that for a while but I don't really have the energy. And this thread is about to be locked. I'll just say that I agree that he's actively harmful to the overall discourse, he's biased as fuck and he has some horrible opinions. The AEW talk is the worst part of the shows. I like when him and Brian are riffing on old comedy and tv shows and random bullshit more than the wrestling talk at this point, rather they'd just do a show like that. Jim is still a funny motherfucker. I was a 605 listener and find Brian entertaining, funny and knowledgeable about all sorts of random minutia wrestling and otherwise. Seems like a dick, but he's pretty unapologetic about it. Reminds me of some people I've known. I'm amazed that him and Jim have lasted so long, most of Brian's other podcast relationships have blown up over one thing or another, but I guess misery loves company. Maybe move this to the podcast thread?
  15. With me at least I think there's also an element of MJF being so good, a deceptively great athlete and making everything look so easy that it makes it seem more like a performance than a struggle. It's hard to explain. Then I have to remind myself that he's like 27 and still a work in progress....
  16. Ballmer's NBA2K18 All-Star team is complete!! Get your Intuit Dome PSLs now!!!
  17. WO/F4W now says Bryan's orbital bone was broken against Andrade on 10/21 think I'm calling shenanigans on that one.... My expectations for big Kenny singles matches are absurdly high so I was kind of disappointed by that match. It was good but missing something and I definitely felt like they could do a lot better in a rematch. A lot of it felt a little too scripted and choreographed, too pretty. There's something detached about MJF's work that kind of takes me out of matches. It feels more like he's checking the boxes in his performance than actually being in it if that makes sense. Not going through the motions because he's working his ass off, but kinda that. All that said, I should probably rewatch it to judge it more fairly, it's not like I didn't like it. I'm also in the camp that would have preferred a non-finish. 30 minute time limit draw, match is thrown out due to tons of interference, take your pick. I wouldn't have booked it here in the first place and you can still do a rematch (they gave Kenny a bit of an out with Callis coming out when he had him up for the 1WA), maybe it doesn't matter
  18. I heard that too!! It wouldn't be the best but I'd pay to see Larry Zbyszko and MJF attempt to out stall each other broadway
  19. It wasn't announced on Dynamite last week, I watched that show and would have remembered such a thing. I mentioned the graphic early in the show, that's how I found out! Looked it up and apparently it was announced on Collision Saturday. Didn't catch that show, I'm not on twitter and didn't check this board for a few days, completely missed it. Outside of the bubble I can't be alone in that. Still seems like unless it was booked on Saturday it could have been promoted better
  20. Danielson's talked about his philosophy re: working injuries and stuff like getting his foot stuck in the ramp over the years. He's so good, he unfortunately gets legit hurt all the time, and "AH MY ORBITAL BONE" is random and believable, so yeah. I don't like when he teases concussions and randomly spasms at all, that's kind of crossing into cruelty to the fans with his history. If it was a work though I'd love to know the motivation. Get a bigger number for the overrun? Build to Okada II? I didn't even see what he got hit with and the announcers didn't seem to know what was going on. Weird ending after a flat finish to a fun match I didn't see the announcement about Okada so you can imagine my shock when he showed up on a graphic early in the show. I was planning on watching anyway but you should probably advertise something that big more than 24 hours ahead of time on social media unless it came together last minute. I had no clue about it going in and I bet a lot of other people didn't either. Is he in the states for another show this week? I liked the Jericho promo with Renee and the Big Show tease, love me some JeriShow. Good use for Paul Wight. The open to the show with fired up MJF was great. Fired up MJF was great in the match! This is the babyface version of him I want to see, dial back the comedy and dial up the intensity. Fun match. Love Juice Robinson's theme music. Acclaimed got a huge pop making the save, they've built this stuff with MJF up well and nursed Acclaimed back to relevance. Setup for the trios titles with BCG and the Kingdom as well. Good stuff, I feel like the booking around MJF has been really on point the last several weeks after the Cole injury derailed things. Personally I'm way more into BCG stealing the BBB and a half dozen guys gunning for MJF than I was the Cole stuff because we're back to actual fucking pro-wrestling Kenny and MJF on Collision is certainly a choice. Knew it was coming soon after they did the 13 day tease but it's one of the biggest matches they can do right now. I know they need strong ratings right now but giving away one of your biggest PPV matches for free is pretty WCW Speaking of WCW I got some real TNA vibes seeing Flair out there with Sting. This was the one thing I had spoiled before I watched because it popped up on my youtube home page (note to self: add youtube to list of places to avoid when not watching live). It's Flair. It's a cool moment in Philly for the Sting retirement tour and I don't really want to see him on TV beyond that. I feel like Flair went into business for himself saying he wanted to be around til March. I guess maybe if they kept him to a minimum in goofy backstage skits with Danhausen etc. I wouldn't mind it Christian got a legit LOL from me when he was like, "relax, relax...I know Ric Flair's not dead" after the crowd reacted to the Weekend at Bernies line First time in a while I'd seen Brother Zay, thought he was the star of that match Are The Outcasts still a thing or not? Ruby is still using the entrance and the music One of the more memorable Dynamites in a while, pretty good crowd (they were only really dead during the first half of the trios)
  21. If they're giving away MJF and Kenny on f'n Collision Tony has lost his damn mind
  22. If you don't remember Juice in NXT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB4a9xz_amA This is great!
  23. Thought White-Penta was pretty good. I'm always surprised what great shape Penta is in, the outfit obscures it. He should wrestle without the top more often. I watched the international feed so this might have been during a break but the announcers were definitely taking veiled shots at Kevin Kelly. There was a "b team" mention and snickers A fan yelled at Juice, "JUICE YOU'RE NOT A HIPPY ANYMORE??!?" I didn't know what the "13 days" thing was in reference to, glad the announcers clarified it later on. They've set up a lot of challengers for MJF now with Omega, Joe and Wardlow on top of Jay White. Good stuff. I'm also digging the build up to MJF teaming with the Acclaimed. I didn't know about the social media stuff before they did the first angle a few weeks ago but I think it's played out fine on TV without that backstory (seen people complain about that). The Acclaimed are goofballs with a "Daddy", Max having a mancrush on MJF isn't that ridiculous and fans seem to be into it. They set up the Kingdom to get involved too in that pre-tape Fletcher-Danielson was probably better but I dug KF and Kenny a lot. Flip bump off the V-Trigger was great. Callis stuff on commentary was good. KF had a great bodyslam during the break. He's still not very over but hopefully these matches will up his status "kicking his opponent to the ring...." Archer looked good, in good shape. No Jake. The two of them were one of my favorite parts of the first year or so of AEW. Max had one of his better raps in a while Daddy Magic is living the gimmick looking like one of those 80's WWF guys who take their foot off the gas when the money run is over and they're on job duty around the horn. The gut on that man....
