  1. Dustin Rhodes vs. Lance Archer

Two big tough Texas lads fighting in Texas! I'd be stoked for this TNT title tournament re-match anywhere in the world. But the Texas angle is a fun one. Like, Eddie Kingston vs Homicide would be great anywhere, but it would add a little extra frisson if they were fighting in Yonkers.

    Alan “5” Angels & 10 vs. reDRagon

Would "Five and Dime" be a good tag team name for this Dark Order duo?

I really like Kyle O'Reily and here's why: Back when I was living in Canada and working as the director of a children's summer camp, I brought a group of staff and volunteers to see an ECCW show in Vancouver. Bryan Danielson was on the card, and I told my staff that this was an opportunity to see the guy I considered to be the best pro wrestler in the world. it ended up being a pretty good-sized group that decided to go. My buddy Verne set us up with great seats and a lot of the wrestlers played directly to us. They definitely created some new big fans of pro wrestling that night!

After the show I was hanging out and catching up and I noticed O'Reily chatting with a couple of female volunteers from the camp. I made my way over there and discreetly let him know that "These girls are not rats." He reacted immediately with genuine shock and told me he's "not like that." I can still remember his tone of voice and facial expression. 100 percent sincere. He was impressed that these were good people who chose to spend their summer volunteering at a kid's camp. I have always liked him since then, and I have watched his developing career with a real sense of happiness.

    Nyla Rose In Action

vs Madi Wrenkowski, the  protege of Thunder Rosa! This will be pretty great. Plus, apparently it will upset some hateful bigots just by taking place at all which is another mark in its favour.

QT Marshall Certificate of Accomplishment to Hook

Gee whiz, @JLowe, sorry you had to sit through this live. ?

I hope we get a few crisp Hook suplexes here. I wonder if cutie will be able to get him to speak. I wonder if chips will be eaten.

FTW Championship Match: Ricky Starks (c) vs. Swerve Strickland

The answer to "Whose house?" is " Swerve's house."

The answer to "who's House" is "House comprises Chris Bronson, Chris Adams, Pete Bainbridge, LA Taylor, and Kneecapper Murphy."

I had to use Cagematch to make that joke. I'll be very impressed indeed if anyone immediately gets it.

I don't think that's the same Chris Adams.

Kneecapper Murphy is a great name!

Also: The FTW Title match is likely to be fast-paced and exciting. Some people hate that. Also someone is likely to complain that whoever takes the loss here is no longer relevant. That's OK. Discussion is fun!

  2. That opening match had a lot of Hart. It was a hit, man.

Darby getting thrown down stairs and Darby marking out for Jeff will hopefully never grow old. Jeff almost missed the Marq on that ladder spot!

FTR vs The Young Butts will be great.

Regal on commentary and the Smells Like Teen Spirit cheerleader moping on the outside were real treats, and the actual wrestling (per se) was top notch... but who the F@#K is Griff Garrison?

    Blackpool Combat Club ???

Anyone watching a TSN feed (or actual TSN) think Sophie Chan is actually a bad mother for lying to her kids like that?

    Wardlow!!!

I like that commentary mentioned Bay Bay and Lethal's ROH background.

Why doesn't Adam Cole own a vacuum?

    Spoiler

Because he's all about the BROOM!

When Adam Cole was a kid, what was his favourite TV show?

    Spoiler

He was all about the ZOOM!

What is Adam Cole's favourite very bad movie?

    Spoiler

You know he's all about The Room!

What is Adam Cole's favourite first-person shooter game?

    Spoiler

    No. He actually prefers Goldeneye.

    Dustin vs Archer re-match ???

I think it would be awkward to have sex while wearing title belts. Anyone here have any experience with that? Dan Lambert is my Bobby Heenan.

Sammy and Tay are young, attractive, and obviously in love. They gonna have to turn them heel, I guess ?

I love the whole Hirsch/Velvet/Buttlander non-title women's division ongoing feud.

Andrade vs Darby will be ill.

I marked out for Silver's "Come on baby!" spot and his hawt tag.

     That's entertainment!

I think that may have been recycling her old Stardom gear so she doesn't get any more bad vibes for wearing her Russian attire. If it was a red top and white shorts, that was what she wore in Stardom.

Yep! I somehow wasn't aware that she had worked in Stardom. That explains the Japanese writing.

  5. I am enjoying this recent trend of under-announcing what's going to be on Dynamite. Only four things have been officially announced so far, if I understand correctly.

Eight-man tornado tag match: Sting, Darby Allin & The Hardys vs. Private Party, The Butcher & The Blade

You're probably gonna need a five-man booth to catch all the action in this one!

I loved Darby Allin vs Butch(er) on Rampage. The "smaller fan favourite gets knocked around the ring, big baddy slips on a nanner peel, blue-eye hits a big move or two for the thrilling victory" formula is a damned good one! These two guys were perfectly cast in their roles. Making it a countout finish was an unexpected twist that worked perfectly.

Deserved to make @Phil Schneider's Ringer column!

Chris Jericho & Daniel Garcia vs. John Silver & Alex Reynolds

I love how Jericho took us from everyone moaning about yet another inner circle talking segment through "Jericho Appreciation Society is a dumb name" to "OK this actually makes sense now and could be really good" in pretty much that many steps.

Jericho is the master of knowing when it's time to switch up his gimmick, and successfully pulling it off to keep things fresh. That's an incredibly valuable skill, isn't it? Understanding when a gimmick has run it's course and become stale and tiresome?(*? at @andyfromkansas*)

    MJF speaks

CM Punk appears in person for the first time since Revolution

It's possible that these two things will in fact be one thing. Who will interrupt whom?

Or maybe @JLowe will get to see a Punk match live!

One reason I love this recent trend of under-announcing their TV shows is that AEW keeps filling in the gaps with exactly what I want to see (like Comoroto, Bear Country, and Legit Leyla on network TV).

I was kinda bummed out that The Spooky McEvils didn't give Bear Country any offence in that trios on Rampage. On the other hand, Fuego's rag doll bumping and selling was insane in that match.

I loved Leyla's new gear. No more Russian flag striping. "Legit" in katakana on her top, and "Re-ra" on her bottom. Jericho and Starks riffing on the Japanese writing got a legit lol out of me.

Thanks to the basketball game going long, I had to leave before Lee vs One of the Acc!aimed started, which also bummed me out. I watched the highlights on YouTube. I agree that some of Lee's movements and reactions seemed a bit slow. I also agree that his power moves like his pounce and his yeet look amazing anyway. Hopefully his body fully recovers from the aftereffects of the coronavirus soon.

So: What are you hoping will fill the gaps this week? Hook, obviously, but what else?

I sure wouldn't mind some JD Drake on the main show. Maybe vs Eddie Kingston?

I wonder if Brian Cage is in Texas this week. Or Miro...

Maybe they've been saving AQA's SSP for the network shows?

EDIT: oh, dang! Just read that a Legit One vs The Nice Lady from Momma's Kitchen re-match has been added! (*dances around, winking and "stirring it up" in pure joy).

DOUBLE EDIT: Hey! @JLowe! Apparently you are also getting Jay Lethal vs Dr. Britt Baker DMD's boyfriend Adam "It's Allabouttha Boom!" Coal Bay Bay.  That could be a good one! ROH title re-match. Wonder if they'll reference that.

TRIPLE EDIT: As posted by @DreamBroken below, Blonds vs Mox & Dragon has been added! Lock the windows and bar the doors! It's AEW Dynamite time once more!

  6. In my experience, a lot of wrestlers are genuinely nice people.

Not always. I have personally seen Dynamite Kid curse out some children who asked him where Matilda was. I heard some very nasty rumours about how one wrestler who became nationally known behaved when he was working in the Vancouver territory. I have heard pro wrestling old-timers tell stories that they thought were very amusing but which seemed to me horrific.

On the other hand, I have had many more very positive experiences hanging out with pro wrestlers than negative ones. I can state with absolute confidence that not all current pro wrestlers are carny assholes who are only out for money.

Abdullah the Butcher and Akira Hokuto both have reputations for being unfriendly to fans. Maybe there some truth to that... but both of them were extremely kind and friendly to me when I had the good fortune of meeting them. Well above and beyond ordinary politeness. So, my tendency is to think that people may not be kind enough in their assessment of some pro wrestler's actual personalities, rather than to assume the opposite.

I have zero problem believing that the nice guy persona that Bryan Danielson portrays is a reflection of the thoughtful, positive, legitimately good dude that he is out of the spotlight. I've been in the same room as him a few times, spoken with him at length, seen how he treats other people... It's a small sample size, but I have never seen him do anything that would make me suspect he's not a genuinely warm and decent human being.

I think Danielson, Kingston, and Mox (to name three) have all given us glimpses of their true selves, recently.

I'm good friends with  a handful of wrestlers, on the Vancouver and Osaka scenes, and some of them at their worst are better than many people at their very best.

Here is a very partial list of wrestlers who have been extraordinarily kind or friendly to me when they didn't stand to gain a single dime from it:

John Tenta, Bad News Allen, Gene Okerlund, Atsushi Onita, Bob Sapp, Asian Cooger. Ebessans 1 and 3, Tigers Mask, Chono, Irie, Akiyama, Apple Miyuki,  Dump Matsumoyo, Joe Doering, Tajiri, Mr. Hito, Kotoge, Harada, Tadasuke, Zeus, Bodyguard, Superstar Billy Graham...

So many positive experiences and happy memories over so many years.

It's cool that there's a diversity of opinion w/r/t how much importance we wanna place on wrestlers being sincere.

It's fair to paint pro wrestling as a business with carny roots based on dishonesty and taking the marks for all they are worth.

However, my point of view is that many of us might be very pleasantly surprised by what many our current favourite wrestlers are like in real life. My experience is that the once-notoriously-carny business has an awful lot of very nice people working in it these days.

37 minutes ago, John from Cincinnati said:

    What?!

    That's s good counterpoint!

    But...

You may recall an isolated asshole fan trying to start a "What?" chant during an emotional ( Kingston? Mox? Punk?) promo on a recent episode of AEW TV and getting shut down immediately while receiving ZERO apparent support from anyone else in the crowd.

I can recall Jericho successfully asking the crowd to stop with WWE-reference chants as "bad ideas from bad creative" and I am pleasantly surprised by how easily Bryan kept an "AEW Yes Movement" from becoming a thing that grew out of control.

I won't even pretend to argue that there aren't asshole wrestling fans. Obviously in any large gathering of human beings there are going to be at least a few assholes.

I might, however, try to argue that the assholes certainly don't seem to be the majority any more... at least not in AEW crowds.

Not sure what the ratio might be for a WM weekend crowd in Texas.

Meh. Call it selling out if you want, but the correct term is cashing in.

The wrestling business is a... business. Always weird to me when fans turn on a guy for doing what he's supposed to be doing. Making money. I would have preferred if he stayed in AEW because I liked the narrative of him betting on himself and trying to live up to his father by being more than just the wrestler. But that's all just a narrative. None of it's true. He didn't own AEW. Not even a piece of it. He is a businessman trying to make the most money possible. Good on him for cashing in.

You sold out is about the dumbest thing anyone could ever chant at a wrestler. EC-dub chants didn't buy Taz a house, but that WWE money sure did. I loved ECW. But this idea that wrestlers are supposed to destroy their bodies for "the love of the game" and not piles and piles of cash is pretttttttty antiquated.

I think there is a sense in which "You sold out!" can be seen as highly complimentary. It kind of means "We cared about you. We identified with you. We considered you 'one of us.' We are sad and even a little angry that, in moving up, you have moved on."

in that sense, "You sold out!" chants might actually be a good sign w/r/t Cody Rhodes. I don't think you get those chants if people have stopped caring about you.

  11. Here's the joke I thought of last night as I was drifting off to sleep:

Idea for Cody's WrestleMania entrance: There's a Jacksonville Jaguar's jersey, a Fulham kit, and an automobile bumper on a.small platform near the entranceway. Cody comes out holding a sledgehammer...

And then I came here to post that joke, and found that @For Great Justice (and others) had beaten me to the punch (no pun intended). And I got a huge smile on my face thinking that I am part of a community where I am not the only person who thinks about pro wrestling that way.

    *****

    Skip-able side-ramble about social media

I am of two minds about the posters here who paste up tweet after tweet after tweet. On the one hand, I strongly agree with the "we do not need to see every tweet from every wrestler" point of view; and often I cannot see any reason for a particular tweet to have been re-posted here other than "Hey! pro wrestling!"

On the other hand, almost every single day there are a handful of genuinely amusing tweets or very cool gifs posted here that I would otherwise miss, since I have never ever been on Twitter myself.

I follow a very small number of people on Insta, mostly people I know in real life. Mostly from a single extended social circle here in Japan.

But my Insta feed is choked up with dad jokes (one in five of which are even mildly amusing, one in ten actually funny), food porn, obviously  manipulated photos of male and female fitness influencers, fitness advice that alternates between terrible and obvious, and worst of all nostalgia posts where there's a picture of, let's say, a bicycle and a caption reading "If you rode one of these as a kid, like this post."

Those nostalgia posts make me weep for the human race. Presumably people are that desperate for any sense of connection whatsoever these days.

I can only assume Twitter is like that, but worse, and with way more negativity.

I occasionally follow a wrestler on Insta that I like but haven't met. But generally only one at a time. At least their muscle/sexy pictures don't appear to have been manipulated! Minoru Suzuki posts lots of pictures of socks!

So: What is wrestling twitter like? Is it possible to manipulate/curate a feed that isn't a maddening stream of vitriol and bullshit? Are there (worthwhile) discussions that go on there that don't make their way over here?

    *****

    Second topic:

Speaking of Cody, (and of Twitter):

Now that he's apparently officially moving to "the other channel" I think it's a good time to gaze into our navels and ask:

Is AEW actually better off without Cody (and Brandy) (and Pharoah) Rhodes?

I don't think this has been discussed much here, yet. Is it a thing on wrestling Twitter?

(Sincere apologies if it has been debated and I somehow missed/forgot it).

Anyway, maybe the answer seems too glaringly obvious (on one side of the debate or the other) for most people?

I mean, Cody is handsome, talented, has star power... Cody vs Dustin is undoubtedly one of the all-time great AEW matches... He and Brandy have cross-over celebrity appeal... People were always talking about Cody and what he was up to... AEW (probably) wouldn't exist without him..

On the other hand, his stuff really didn't seem to fit in any more, even given the extremely broad range of stuff (from Orange Cassidy through Eddie Kingston, from Abadon through Juventud) that somehow does manage to fit in on AEW's shows. He seemed, at times, pretty tone deaf. He made some baffling creative decisions. And so on.

Certainly there are a lot of arguments to be made on both sides. I am only scratching the surface here.

There might also be arguments to be made (kindly and unkindly) that Cody will be better off without AEW.

Personally, it feels weird to say it, but I think I have been enjoying AEW's shows a bit more since he left. They have certainly had zero difficulty putting on banger after banger even with Cody gone, Kenny and Miro on the shelf, and so on. Its kind of amazing. And it speaks well of the breadth and depth of AEW's roster and their style of booking lots of wrestlers to look strong rather than having a.tiny handful of top wrestlers who dominate the main event and championship scenes.

I feel like Bryan, Punk, Kingston, Wardlow, Keith Lee, Thunder Rosa, and others are a better fit on 2022 AEW's (very spacious) upper card/TV main event scene than 2022 Cody Rhodes is.

Quite curious if everyone generally feels the same, or not.

Also, while we are navel-gazing here: Is there ANY chance whatsoever that this is all (still) part of some massive post-modem Brian Pillman style swerve?

Maybe the "Jericho Appreciation Society" is a way for AEW to beat Cody to the "I am a pro sports entertainer and I love sports entertaining" punch! ?

As seen on the ROH thread, FTR vs Briscoes has been booked for Supercard of Honor.

What's also interesting, and why I'm posting this here, is that it looks very much like SoH will be going head to head with Rampage that week.

I am assuming that the date and time were already set and Tony Khan decided to honour that commitment (no pun intended) (rather than assuming that Tony Khan is trying to book AEW some direct competition).

It will be interesting to see how that affects ratings, and hilarious to read how the "The Sky Is Falling" and "same-day American TV ratings are still the be-all and end-all because the TV landscape has not changed since the 90s" brigades react to those numbers! I can hardly wait.

If I am able to watch the ROH show live, it will be a tough choice which one to go with first, and which one to watch later. It will be really interesting to mine the Supercard for clues about the future direction of ROH, and to see who Tony Khan books on each show that day.

It will be fascinating to see what gets booked on Rampage. That's WM weekend, right? Presumably lots of hardcore fans will be in the area instead of home watching TV, and there will be many many alternatives to Rampage, and the Supercard going on around then.

Will AEW punt on the show to give ROH more views or go all out (also no pun intended) to draw eyes their way? Will there be cross-promotion?

    Gonna be interesting!

  14. Following up an all-timer of a PPV and a stacked St. Paddy's Day Dynamite, AEW dials it down a notch and gives us... exactly the kind of low-key wrestling card that I, personally, love to watch.

Bear Country & Fuego (!) vs House of Black

I am so stoked to see three of my favourite AEW YouTube show mainstays on Rampage! What kind of freaky strength spot will Boulder pull off against the Evil Tattooed Guys? I wish House of Black would just come out to Malakai's very very awesome theme (I think it's called GNAGONFRUZZST). Bear Country have to be on the verge of breaking all the way through by now. Obviously, they are gonna lose today, and watching Fuego get tossed around is going to be great, but I am mostly looking forward to seeing what Boulder and Bronson do in there.

    Legit Leyla vs Red Velvet

Speaking of breaking all the way through... it does my heart good to see how well The Legit One (I can't spell Hirsch) has gotten herself over with the AEW crowd and the folks on these boards. It's kind of a shame, in my opinion, that quite a few people want her to be The Female Taz(z) rather than just letting her be her own thing... but that's an issue I have with a lot of AEW talk in general. It's a "me" thing. But Hirsch is awesome. She doesn't need to ride on anyone's coattails.

    Max Caster vs Keith Lee

I am enjoying the patient way AEW is bringing Keith Lee along. Reminds of what they did with Miro. when you've got someone as awesome as Rusev or Bearcat, there's no need to rush things. They have so much obvious star power. You'd have to be unbelievably incompetent to screw up booking dudes like that!

    Darby Allen (w/Sting) vs Butch(er) (w/Blade)

I like how the ongoing Andrade storyline has so many threads, and how those threads intersect with so many other threads. And there are so many intriguing possible match-ups that can be built out of that.

Like this one! Who doesn't like a good David vs Goliath match?

No massive, huge, must-see "Championship Opportunities" here. Just a bunch of really good, likable, entertaining, gifted pro wrestlers doing what they do best. And if you're not down with that, I have two words for ya: "Fair enough."

For me, personally, I love this kind of show every bit as much as I loved the totally stacked ones.

    That's a great point!

Probably, a lot of people don't know that his real name is Mongoose McQueen

I don't want to shock anybody and I'm not trying to be controversial, but in my opinion AEW has been on quite a roll recently.

I like how we got fast exciting big spot action in the opener, hard hitting technical violence in the tag match, power wrestling and shenanigans with the TNT Angle Advancement match, real talk mixed with high comedy from Jericho, then I had to go get my Pfizer shot but I'm assuming at least some blood and violence in the cage match. Nice buffet there. Something for everyone.

EDIT: and I didn't realize, or maybe I forgot, that Garcia was the guy who got into the accident that Jericho helped out.

Glad I got to see most of the show before getting vaxxed, as I wasn't able to avoid spoilers this time. Forgot to turn chat notifications off.

A Sports Entertainment faction has potential to be hellaciously entertaining! Some good ideas getting floated in this thread already.
