  1. I watched a few films over the weekend that really helped in shaping out my list to where I feel that it'd be respectable if I did not watch anything else prior to balloting. One film I really want to place on everyone's radar is the below film. I am pasting a brief blurb I posted about it on my Letterboxd account. Ida - I can throw many adjectives at Ida for which it rightfully deserves: gorgeous, effective, engaging. Ida explores and ultimately wrestles with a platter of ideas at the viewer while not wasting a single frame and says a multitude while rationing the film's dialog. How does Poland move past the atrocities of the Holocaust? How can Ida stay steadfast with her faith now that she's faced with a new history and new temptations? I like the decision to keep the camera still for most of the film until its final moments. It jars the viewer into an uncertain world that Europe and Ida must face ahead.
  2. My understanding was that the Bobbleheads had a Dead influence, but I could be wrong there.
  3. There was a report that Roo offered the Dead members 3 Million to do Roo, which would have been a nice excuse to bust back out the Bobbleheads they apparently got rid of last year. I loved those Bobble heads. They were the perfect landmark for meeting spots.
  4. Even though I am by no means a Dead guy, I kind of hate that Bonnaroo didn't secure the Dead reunion. It would definitely surpass our current headliner situation. Also, other southeast festivals dropped their lineups. Shaky Knees is a festival that understands its audience and released a rad lineup. Big Guava in Tampa uses a lot of those same artists plus Passion Pit, and Counterpoint just sounds like a chaotic blur of Jam Bands and EDM. The Price-point and shorter drive to Counterpoint has me interested as well. Shaky Knees is really the most friendly lineup to me, but I understand they are in a bad venue for a third year in a row. Can they really not justify a full weekend in Piedmont Park or Centennial without charging an arm and a leg?
  5. I still have not finished watching the final season.

    OSCARS 2015

Let's not get into immediate Hyperbole. I bet if you run through the list of all of them, you would find some worse ones. For example, I was just reminded that Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was nominated for 2011.
  7. I'm about halfway through this thing...if quirky's not your thing, stay far, FAR away from it. I mean, the movie opens with a guy cooking along to a chef on TV who reaches through the screen and helps him, there's a guy in a mouse costume playing a mouse who lives in their house, and when the doorbell rings, it comes to life crawls around the floor until it gets smushed by a frying pan. And that's in the first five minutes or so! Gondry without any studio funding can be way out there. I think the last thing of his that I watched and never got around to finishing was The Science of Sleep, which was another quirky film. The last film o his I enjoyed was Be Kind Rewind.

    True Detective

Sandler's in both the newest Jason Reitman and Thomas McCarthy movies. (The McCarthy one is supposed to be bad, though.) The Reitman one is supposedly not much better, and I think you can rent it through VOD if not now before the end of the month.
  9. The rumor is both he and Deadmau5 are going unopposed on the main stage, which probably would mean a healthy nap for myself if I go.
  10. A lot of Roo's audience is younger and probably does not have the experience with Joel's catalog that some might, so they're just excited to hear say "Piano Man" live. I am also a big proponent of seeing guys with a mostly positive reputation live, for the "oh shit, I saw _______" live thing. In some cases, that ends up being one of the best shows of my life (like Macca was).
  11. I still need to see all of Anatolia. That director does not know how to make anything short of three hours it seems.
  12. To play off of Jingus's list, here is my 2014 Big Unseen stuff from Me (I am sure I am forgetting stuff): Ida, Blue Ruin, The Immigrant,The Double, Frank, The Drop, The Babadook, Lego Movie, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, 2 Days 1 Night, Winter Sleep, St. Vincent, Whiplash, Love is Strange, Tale of Princess Kaguya, Night Moves, A Most Violent Year, Unbroken, American Sniper, Wild, Selma, The Imitation Game, Mood Indigo, Foxcatcher, A Most Violent Year, and I am sure a few other ones.
  13. Of the Acts I haven't seen that I want to see, there's just enough to entice me, but I am not as giddy as past years over it. My Morning Jacket Billy Joel Florence Brandi Carlile Hozier Ben Harper Bassnectar Jamie XX The Growlers Houndmouth War on Drugs Strand of Oaks
  14. There's a lot to like in that Roo lineup, but there is not a lot of WOW. Ben Harper & Innocent Criminals Reunion is a pretty awesome add though. I hope they do tour some non-fest dates in the southeast.
  15. I wouldn't be surprised to see ACL drop the second weekend at some point. I think they've reached a point where there is no way to accommodate the crazy of trying to squeeze everything into one weekend from a local-impact point of view, so they bring back the national acts for a second week with different locals, but now they've reached a point where both weekends have enough heat and tourists to make shit messy for locals, but not enough to reach that critical mass inside the park. They're basically victims of their own success (and the total clusterfuck Austin has become generally as its out-of-control growth continues). Well, I think ACL more than any of the other fests was responding to people complaining about how quickly they sold out a one weekend festival. With a festival like ACL, you're only going to sell out your first weekend because the luster of the festival is not the same for the second weekend, and you do not have the same media coverage either. 2014's was a little different in that they booked Lorde for the second weekend, which I am sure helped that weekend slightly.
  16. They're dumb and the water down things. I think Coachella's quality has dipped since they started. The only acceptable festival for it in my opinion is Jazz Fest.
  17. I am bumping this topic myself. A coworker asked me to look at theirs. It had the "system update didn't process properly (paraphrasing)" error. I downloaded the update to a thumb drive, ran it, and started to cook lunch. I noticed when I stepped away from cooking that the console was on but the tv acted like it was receiving no HDMI signal. I tried rebooting and still no signal. I tried switching HDMI cables and no luck. Is this a case of the hard drive going on the fritz? I'm not sure because you would think even with a bad HD that I would be getting a bios screen or something.
  18. This PPV could be under 2 hours and just be those two matches as far as I am concerned. What other filler would be worth throwing onto the undercard?
  19. It looks like the only major summer festivals we will not know the lineups for next week will be Firefly and Forecastle. I wonder of Sasquatch is attempting the two separate lineups thing from last year again.
  20. The undercard seems like it has potential based on what is confirmed and I don't mind navigating the main stages. I feel like I've mastered that art. I can get close when I want to get close. I wish I could figure out navigating the tent stages which tends to be a pain for any shows where the crowd reaches beyond the awning.
  21. Billy Joel - Kendrick Lamar - Mumford and Sons - Deadmau5 That is your top billing. Kendrick goes from random Sunday spot at What Stage two years ago to Roo headliner. I still do not get the appeal.
  22. I watched the ACH/Lethal match that Alan gushed over. While I wouldn't call it ****3/4 like Alan did, I thought it was an unexpectedly solid match. I know Lethal is capable of good work, but this was the most complete match I had seen from ACH. This would probably be somewhere in my better matches of 2014 list.
  23. Was Ross's intro taped after Sunday? I'd like to hear him talk about his Japan experience at least.
