  1. Would've said It was closer to 90% full. Atmosphere was insane, like a playoff game at the Nassau Colliseum level loud. My friend actually went down and stormed the court with the Harvard students.
  2. Ron Wilson went on the air during TSN Trade Center and openly admitted he participated in matchfixing while in the NHL. I am not making this up. He literally sat there and said he was instructed by management to do everything in his power to ensure his team lost games, and that the challenge was figuring out ways to get his players to agree to do it without actually outright telling them to throw games. This is an established, respected hockey figure. Nobody in the media said a word and the only legal action to come out of the show was Joffrey Lupul threatening to sue some guy on twitter. The NHL doesn't care. They're not going to do anything. I have to admit I find the glee some people have about their team losing to be shit. I don't want to lose. I want to win. I want to win every game. If that means the Oilers never pick first overall ever again, fucking great. The only suggestion I can make is an absolute, straight lottery system between every team that misses the playoffs. But even then, it's capped at 20% now to get first overall. And look at this shit show. It's ridiculous. I want to see the Sabres win a Stanley Cup in my lifetime. We have a shot at a guy who would all but guarantee that happenig and a consolation prize of a guy who would be a pretty big step towards that goal. Tanking is really the only way things get better because even though Pegulia will spend $$$ it's next to impossible to get a franchise player via FA in the NHL because they almost never hit the open market. And then you end up giving stupid money to Ville Leino in desperation.
  3. Oilers with at least a loser point so our lead is back up to 4 points.
  4. Congrats grizz! Goal was one for the all time blooper reel.
  5. But they are a shoe in for an at large bid!
  6. Game is godawful? Let's take out the one world class player! That should make everything better.
  7. The english commentary is about as professional as what you would find on a public access broadcast of a high school game in Bumblefuck County. Seriously they could pull two people from the stands and they would do a better job than Calligiri and that other guy.
  8. You can make a good case that Boychuck is the key reason Isles went from gong show to legit contender. Saw that the deal Is front loaded and drops to $4 mil for last 2 years so I don't think back end will be a Pronger like cap killer. Also think they still have plenty of room w/cap even if it does go down, not to mention almost all key players are locked up at reasonable prices.
  9. FWIW the people on the Islandermania board are doing backflips over the deal. People criticising the deal fail to understand how symbolic this is to the Isles fan base. Remember this is the team that traded for a retired player they weren't going to have to pay just because his cap hit would get them above the floor. But not only is the deal good for credibility, it was important because Boychuck has made an incredible impact on this team and they couldn't afford to lose him.
  10. After last night I've come to the conclusion that Lafayette are communist scum!
  11. Wasn't really carping about them, just hate the "We can't support Metro because they play in Jersey" types who are a blight on humanity. Also, I knew this was going to happen with the Yankee players and their fans bitching about sawker ruining their field (apparently they are made of less stern stuff than the Yankee teams who shared the old stadium with the old Generals in the late 60's). MLS rushed into this while ignoring just about every precondition they had for an expansion franchise because they saw $$$ and it's come back to bite them in the ass. Sad part is that even with as bad a job as the City people have done and all the mistakes they have made the initial signs have been far more positive than I expected. Actually, here's a solution I can see happening: team reaches an agreement with the Wilponzis to play at Citi Field, because they don't give a flying fuck about their team or fans so they'll gladly take the money. BTW major bonus points to you if you can screen capture my name on the STH scarf :-) . With City at this point I am almost hoping they are a great success to the point they embarass the Red Bull morons into selling the team.
  12. If you had tomorrow (and not today) in the shit hitting the fan on YSv2.0 hosting a soccer team (complete with whining from Yankee players), YOU LOSE! I can't wait to see the "we are too good to support a team who plays in Jersey" types if they end up having to groundshare with us in Harrison.
  13. A friend hooked me up for the big Ivy League showdown this Saturday. How's this for a full day: 1pm: Flyers-Wings, 4pm Yale-Harvard, 7:30pm Sixers-Nets.
  14. Mario was bigger, stronger, faster and led the league in scoring while missing half a season with cancer. Easy decision Gordie was a slightly above average NHL 'er... in his 50's. And I think you would get an argument on the strength thing from Lou Founiano (sp?), whose face Gordie famously rearranged in a fight in the 50s.
  15. That goal is just ridiculous. Just rewatched it again. IMHO, Mario is the greatest hockey player of all-time but what video shows is that he was also a heckuva skater at one time. I tend to think more of the half-speed-but-still-better-than-everyone-else Mario we saw toward the end of his career but the Mario who won Cups could MOVE. All hail Super Mario - only dude to score every possible type of goal (shorthanded, even strength, power play, penalty shot, empty net) in one game. The idea of a Red Wings fan saying anyone but Gordie was the greatest of all time strikes me as blasphemy. And my great NS memory was the Whalers winning a game at the old Met Center in the last second of OT on an Adam Burt goal in 1991.
  16. Rename them the North Stars and bring back the old N logo/unis. Would that help?
  17. Got a $7 ticket on StubHub for the Big East curtain jerker day tomorrow (Seton Hall vs Marquette, DePaul vs Creighton). You will probably be able to count the number of people left in the stands at the start of that second game.
  18. As terrible a show as this was, I'm almost willing to give it a pass because the Connor announcment was the single greatest thing WWE has ever done or will ever do.
  19. There is a special place in hell for anyone who would object to this. Actually I take that back, even satan wouldn't want to be associated with them.
  20. Inducting Connor was the single greatest thing WWE has ever done.
  21. If he outright said that I hope Kelly sues him for libel. The fact that ESPN employs the guy is a disgrace, but I guess that tells you all you need to know about them valuing screaming fools. Didn't outright say it. Did heavily imply it. Basically, he brought up the Riley Cooper n-word incident, then went over some of the Eagles' recent player cuts - all the while saying things like "Well, some of these moves make brothers uncomfortable" and "I guess Riley Cooper is Chip Kelly's kind of guy". Probably not quite libel/slander. The real surprise was when Skip Bayless agreed with him. I guess Skip couldn't think of anything idiotic to say on his own (or somehow get Tebow into the conversation) and felt he had to contribute somehow. That reminds me of the time Bischoff said Bruce Mitchell had a lot in common with disgraced pedophile ML Curley. Mitchell sued and the case was quickly settled out of court. He didn't come right out and say Bruce was a kid toucher but like Screamin A it was obvious what he was saying. I'm no legal expert but I'd think Kelly would have a strong case.
  22. If he outright said that I hope Kelly sues him for libel. The fact that ESPN employs the guy is a disgrace, but I guess that tells you all you need to know about them valuing screaming fools.
  23. Something to think about while watching all the shitty games that littered MLS week 1: league is going to expand by at least 4 more teams in the next few years. But don't worry, this is all part of Garber's plan to be a top league by 2022 by diluting the league's tallent pool.
  24. Slim and None by Howard Baldwin is great. Dynasty by Greg Pratto on the Islanders fron 72-84 is also highly recommend. But the best sports book ever is The Bad Guys Won by Jeff Pearlman on the defining team of my youth: the World Champion 1986 New York Mets. Go out and get it, just trust me on this one.
  25. One step closer to McEichel baby! And the Laffs are officially the Knicks of hockey. Hey, there's a great trade that should be made this offseason: Kessel for Melo straight up!
