Well it depends on what you are saying the "common opinion" is. Like most feel that Mauro is the best play by play person the WWE has (but that is a low bar). Granted - there is an inherent bias there as most LOVED his work on the New Japan English show. As per with everyone else - he is much better when not getting micromanaged by Vince (like Michael Cole on the UK show, Mauro's best work was probably the CWC) You would not be the first person to not like Mauro though. I have seen/heard arguments that his over the top excitement comes off as fake, the hookey catchphrases (MAMA MIA!), the pop culture references that are forced and unnecessary, etc... Now - no matter how you feel about the job Mauro is doing, I don't know how you can say he is the first to go when Otunga is sitting there
