  1. Another Miyamoto quote relevant to the initial question: "If you're familiar with things like Popeye and some of the old comic characters, you would oftentimes see this cast of characters that takes on different roles depending on the comic or cartoon. They might be businessman in one [cartoon] or a pirate in another. Depending on the story that was being told, they would change roles. So, to a certain degree, I look at our characters in a similar way and feel that they can take on different roles in different games. It's more like they're one big family, or maybe a troupe of actors." Never mind Mario not having a medical license, who the fuck let Tom Cruise fly that fighter jet?
  2. How the hell do you know he's not a doctor? Maybe he went to night school, pal. Miyamoto said so. I know this isn't the case because the following is a quote from the guy on the subject and the final sentence is one of my favourites: "There's really only one rule in terms of the things that Mario does. Generally, it's that he's more on the blue-collar side. He's hard-working, and certainly much more physical in nature. So, I think that a doctor is sort of an unexpected and perhaps unbelievable role for Mario. Perhaps the Dr. Mario you're thinking of was maybe, in some way, not necessarily legitimate."
  3. Now I remember why I quoted the golden age bit - another part of the Kamiya console warrior twitter thing was this. Not only were there a ton more exclusives back in the day, there were a ton more systems to divide them between and the best part was that you had to sit and pray that any of them even reached your country in the first place. So you could pay obscene prices for them. If they weren't arcade games, that is. Every now and again you'd get a home downport like Street Fighter II and you'd love the hell out of it because Digital Foundry wasn't around yet to count how many pixels were on screen and tell you it sucked.
  4. Great post, though I'm fairly sure the rage is reserved for the particular type of exclusive Microsoft introduced a decade ago where a company will pay to delay or effectively destroy games rather than create them. It flaring up now is still a viable point to mock however. The 80% comment reminded me of the other reason I was amused by this. Despite the console running away with gen eight, the PS4 is not getting 80% of the games released. I'm trying to picture the hordes of people who own a Playstation 4, are fine with going without Vita exclusives, Japanese-focused developers, Microsoft's exclusives, Nintendo's studios, Nintendo's affiliated studios, just about the 3DS's entire library, the masses of PC-only indie games, community-based PC gaming and all of the blossoming iOS gaming explosion... then lose their shit because they can't play Tomb Raider.
  5. I love it when 'hardcore' gamers get furious about being 'denied' games because they refuse to buy more than one games machine every six years (Kamiya has advice for thee), or act as if it is unacceptable that they buy a games console 'just' to play the games that are on it, as if there were any other sane reason in the world to do so. Also this shit's been going on for years. Try not to think about how many of your game purchases were used to fund whatever ransom Rockstar demanded from Sony/Microsoft for the privilege of hosting GTA5 first.
  6. Time to wheel this jpeg out of the retirement home one more time

    2014 G1 Climax

That's a complaint I'd direct towards New Japan in general because of a personal preference towards uncommon finishes to keep people (fans and fighters) on their toes rather than wait-for-the-finisher pro wrestling. Usually I'd use WWE's dominance and NJPW's upturn as proof that the market has spoken and I should silence my out-of-touch dissent, but for me crazy results and alternate match styles that couldn't normally happen are the whole point of booking a tournament like this. Main event, or upper card match in a tour ender with Meltzer-influenced iPPV dollars to be had then I get it you've got to ep it up a bit, but not here. Was going to say something about how the giant format means there's no room for palate-cleanser tags when I realised that while the heavies are killing themselves the rest of the roster are sat in the back enjoying their two months off. Awkward. Sucks for Goto to un-win his feud.
  8. Would it have been unfair in 2000 when Deus Ex came out to judge it by the then-fourteen years old Super Mario Bros's standards? Because that one doesn't work in its favour either.

The twenty-six day break until the next show suggests the wrestlers might be too.

    2014 G1 Climax

In a time when New Japan have built themselves up their biggest collection of viable homegrown stars in absolutely yonks it's a shame it is now an annual tradition that when they all get thrown together and put on the best tournament in pro wrestling half the internet fumes that they have to give the win to the part timer who screwed the company over twice.
  11. There is no good reason for this. Except maybe a gen 9 re-rerelease.

    Warning: Yano/Anderson spoilers.
  13. Thanks. Now I know I wasn't imagining that thread, and also that this is the second time in a row I've published the same libel about my own go-to SNES link.

    2014 G1 Climax

Best thing about this G1 is the schedule. We have days off to catch up and digest after each round. Wrestlers have days off to not slowly die as the tournament goes on. Hopefully the extended format means more people go into the final hyped from having seen it unfold up to that point than are burned out from it. I was going to mention that I'd heard good things about AJ and I'm interested in seeing his fresh match ups free of the usual main event obligations. Speculation / Fantasy booking in spoilers.
  15. Could've sworn we had this thread not so long ago because I remember posting this link - Super Play magazines' top 100 SNES games. There were a couple of odd missing titles (Donkey Kong Country 2 was one of them, forget the other) but otherwise a fantastic list. Personally, I've played sixteen games that I've awarded a 10/10 to in my head, and Super Bomberman, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid and The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past make up five of them.

I still haven't seen the 8/8 show from the 2004 G1 because those two top the card and I couldn't imagine anything topping it on a personal level.

Nak and the Mak are all you need from that press conference.
  18. The version I had was that Tenzan legit couldn't continue due to dehydration. A shame because despite the result being a cornerstone of the IWGP/Tenzan chunder years I loved the idea both of a match ending eleven seconds from time and someone (/ a whole company) so plainly holding out for the bell. In hindsight it's obvious. Draw is the safe choice for a double title match like this, this was Tenzan's first defence having already had two recent runs cut short, Nakamura going sixty with him next defence to prove that New Japan guys could go the distance etc. The 'greater' champion getting agro from colleagues, trying to roll to the outside and New Japan staff invading the ring to stall for time was never going to be in the script no matter the result. Not shown here: Kojima deliberately dropping the IWGP belt on his way out and Nakamura flipping his shit in response. I remember at the time thinking it was the best acting job I'd seen in wrestling. Total bloodlust.
  19. You can tell gaming is a youth pursuit because every year '8-bit-style' graphics becomes increasingly bewildering to anyone time travelling from the 80s.
  20. What would people advise is the safest way to flog an eshop download code (UK)? I usually stick to ebay for selling but doesn't seem like that would be a good idea here.
  21. Not weighing in on the GOTG talk, but saw Swayze Express saying he/she was using this forum to look for Wii games to play so I thought I'd expand a bit on this thing's library seeing as it's like 90% exclusives. WII GAMES I'VE PLAYED: SMASHING STATUS CONFIRMED Excite Truck - Never encountered a review that said this game was great, and never encountered anyone who played this game that thought it wasn't. I recently heard some of its terrible, generic rock soundtrack in a youtube vid and by Pavlovian response my pulse quickened. Neo Geo Everything - Anthologies for Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters: Orochi Saga. SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1 and virtual console for the rest. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition - See my post above. Kororinpa: Marble Mania - Toy-like in a physical way that tickles different parts of the brain than the usual viddygam fare. New Super Mario Bros Wii - The success of New Super Mario Bros prods Nintendo to get the band back together to make a proper Mario Bros. Super Mario Galaxy - The only game I've played that felt like it was from the future. I'm saving the sequel for when I've got 30 days to live or something. Wario Land: Shake It! - Gorgeous, serene platform puzzling made all the sweeter by previously playing a trillion inferior indy attempts at the same. Wii Sports Resort - Rockstar take note - this is how you do table tennis. Honourable mentions: House of the Dead 2 and 3 (haven't played 3 yet. Don't need to). Geometry Wars: Galaxies. Mario Kart Wii (cannot fully recommend with Nintendo Wi-fi no longer with us). Sonic Colors is the best 3D Sonic I've played if you like that sort of thing. Metroid Prime 3 and Twilight Princess are both average entries for very good franchises. WII GAMES I HAVE YET TO PLAY: SMASHING STATUS PENDING Tatsunoko vs Capcom - Marvel vs Capcom 3 before Marvel vs Capcom 3 came out, with a nuttier / cooler delete as appropriate cast of characters. Punch Out! - Supposed to be better than Super, and Super was super. Sin & Punishment: Star Successor - Very probably the best rail shooter ever and sadly possibly the last Treasure great. Rhythm Heaven Fever - Rhythm Tengoku goes big screen. Pro Evolution Soccer - Konami add the option of a control scheme where you use the pointer to control team mate movement and precision passes (and apparently works great). Am looking forward to playing a football game differently for the first time this century. Boom Blox Bash Party - Sequel to 'that Spielberg game' that is actually meant to be really good. Also, gawk at the wonder of an EA game released on a Nintendo system that gave a shit. Xenoblade Chronicles - is meant to be the best JRPG of the generation. Disclaimer: I still don't know whether this means it is good. Honourable mentions: Skyward Sword. Little King's Story. Donkey Kong Country Returns (though '2nd best 2D platformer of the generation' doesn't mean much when Tropical Freeze tops it). Kirby's Return to Dreamland. Smash Bros Brawl. Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus. Rayman Origins. Novelty picks (not greats by any measure, but might grab some interest for the jaded gamer) Red Steel 2 - Wii swordfighting done okayish! Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure - It's a console exclusive point and click game made in Japan! Elebits - Use the wii remote to trash rooms by throwing everything around! Let's Tap - Place wii remote on the official let's tap cardboard trays and tap said trays to victory! No More Heroes - Suda51 makes you use the remote to slash up goons then jerk yourself off! Warioware: Smooth Moves - Get friends round and drink and laugh! Endless Oceans 1 & 2 - Serene scuba exploring! Trauma Team - Dramatic surgery! Deadly Creatures - Game about being a spider and a scorpion starring Dennis Hopper! Fishing Resort - No joke I've seen a ton of people pimp this Yuji Naka fishing game that wasn't released in Europe. Muscle March - 'Each of the game's three levels involves players chasing after a thief, who has stolen their bodybuilding friends' tub of protein powder, through a number of environments.' A Boy and His Blob. Muramasa: Demon Blade. Klonoa. De Blob 2. Disaster: Day of Crisis. Castlevania/Contra Rebirth. Dead Space: Extraction. Flingsmash. Madworld. Bit.Trip Complete. Wii Fit. Wii Music. Pointer control Pikmin.
  22. My NNID won't be much use for a long while as my Wii U is perma-parked at the home of a friend who has much less of a backlog. If Smash fever gets too much around release date I'll probably dip my toes into Brawl.
  23. I will inevitably pick up the Wii U version at some point. The most moronic decision of my life was not picking up Melee until April last year. I've had a Gamecube since near-launch.

Full cards from Stu: Nice to see some (modest) Tenzan support, because he sure wasn't what your average puro fan was looking for back when he was actually good.
  25. I was convinced Big Mouth Loud was that kind of thing, for NJPW. Then Shibata went into MMA Ugh, bad memories. I was the same. Luckily I didn't get into puro earlier and have to suffer the slow realisation that Zero One was a) legit and b) where Hash would spend the rest of his career.
