  4. Ehh. You can argue MLB stats pre-integration shouldn't be recognized either. Or that Negro League stats not against the white leagues shouldn't be. Heck, MLB counts the Federal and Player's League stats - and those were poor imitations of leagues. Shoot, you can argue the quality of play in certain eras of MLB aren't totally valid (like the AL in the 50's aside from the Yankees Dynasty or the Deadball Era and 19th Century baseball in general). Last I checked, Cy Young was still credited with 511 wins and...it's a real stretch to think an 1890's pitcher could beat a decent college team of today. The leap in logic to consider Japan (or even the PCL) is more of a stathead overarching concept and comes from now accepting the Negro Leagues as valid. For example, if we accept Josh Gibson as a HOFer (and we should, for sure) and we only look at the stats in league games, we see a poor candidate. But we know he barnstormed, played countless undocumented exhibitions and played winter league in Latin America - and all that combined creates his myth. So we're in fact, appreciating ALL he accomplished even if his stats that will now show on B-Ref or whatever are poor. So in appreciating the whole picture, it's only a hop skip and jump to start appreciating and accepting other leagues - including Japan. MLB will never recognize Japan Leagues in my lifetime, if ever - Japan has its own HOF after all. And it's not like other sports leagues don't dismiss what they don't understand/mesh with (the NFL with the CFL, the NBA with the ABA). But in the stathead community this probably will open doors to giving more consideration to Japanese stars as greats alongside the usual cast of characters we know well. Plus, if it gets Lefty O'Doul in the NBHOF it would be worth it.
  5. Yeah. MLB clearly went into this with rose-colored glasses. You can argue the merits and rightly call adding the Negro League stats as gentrifications and pure PR shucksterism. You won't be wrong. This is MLB patting itself on the back. But there's a lot of bad to this that MLB sort of ignored - willingly or not. But focusing on the good - There is a lot to be said about the Lord's work the researchers have done in going through game recaps and box scores to get stats. The researchers really need to be commended for the work they did. And one can hope this will also open the door to MLB accepting Pacific Coast League stats AND...the ultimate...accepting Japanese League stats as valid too.

  11. Robbed was too harsh. My bad. Denny was a perfectly acceptable choice. He gave up less Hits, Walks and Earned Runs. He also lead Soto in WAR and ERA+. Soto threw 31 more innings, with 15(!) more complete games and 103 more K's. Plus Denny was pitching on a pennant winning club and the 83 Reds...were not that. But like you said, Soto was another case of a Reds pitcher who had bad luck with another pitcher being a (even if a smidge) better.

  13. And Mario Soto was robbed in '83 to John Denny's out of his head season. Not saying Denny was the worst choice, but Soto had a good argument. And GOD were the '83 Reds REALLY REALLY shitty.
  14. He has the mullet. No chance he does not have both.
  15. We need footage of a fanny pack and/or zubaz present for this to be a proper work.

  23. Is it too early for LOLMets? Naw it never is. Steve Cohen to blow up Wilpons’ ‘archaic’ Mets technology
  24. Fitting. It's either this or someone is going to post the Everlast album. It's best to go with the Tom Waits Whitey Ford reference. And yeah. Gonna say it - screw Paul Simon. This is a better use of baseball players in a song than Mrs. Robinson.
