I don't think they're banking on any type of name recognition on any of these people so much as they think recruits who have played sports in college regardless of success or notoriety counts as having an accredited athletic background, which makes for good sound bytes they can bring up and adding some type of legitimacy to the product. There is probably also the thought that if someone is athletic enough to have played sports on a collegiate level then theoretically they can transfer those skills over to wrestling easier than some random person who wants to get trained. I'd assume Johnny Ace or whomever else works on the recruiting front interviews these people to assess what sort of personality and charisma they might have in order to determine what they're capable of on the mic and such.
JR has to be kicking himself that he's not going to be there to talk these guys up.

I'm checked out on all of the Forbidden Door PPV stuff. I'm glad we have Blood & Guts coming and I'm excited for whatever July reset we get, including the idea of a ROH PPV in July (Joe vs Lethal; maybe Yuta vs Garcia; FTR vs Ropangi Vice 2?). I feel like a kid watching Starrcade 95 and wanting a proper blowoff to the Savage/Luger feud and another Big Bubba vs Jim Duggan match instead of all this NJPW stuff they're giving me.
There is a very real chance that we are getting American Dragon vs Zack Sabre Jr.
And you are checked out?

Spoiler
I feel like Hangman vs Jay should be really really good. Mox vs Tana has been percolating for a long time and I expect Mox to go 100 percent here. Danielson vs ZSJ is the dream match for me!
Not directly related to the PPV, but: Archer in the G-1 makes sense and will be fun, but I've definitely fantasy booked myself into disappointment in this regard.
I was pretty surprised that nobody from AEW showed up in Osaka to help hype the show.

Enjoyed the show quite a bit. Made it to my buddy's house right in time to catch Khan on the Cobb's entrances for the tag match. Missed the Yano match
Enjoyed the show more than I expected... but I put more energy and attention into catching up and bantering with my friend than into watching the matches, until the main event.
SpoilerQuite a finishing sequence there between Okada and Jay! We both popped pretty hard for the title change! Jay vs Hangman ought to be very good.
@The Natural I agree with your take on the G-1 announcement. We set our expectations too high. I was surprised also that nobody from AEW flew over to make a surprise appearance at the show.

Find someone who loves you as Konosuke Takeshita does Cinnabon!
As in: A temporary out of control infatuation that they eventually get sick of, which is fun while it lasts and hopefully does no permanent, irreversible harm?
OK. Can do.

Kingston is so good at fighting back from underneath. His sympathy selling is as good as it gets. I had some issues with my stream at the end of the match, but from what I saw Hager did a great job as the monster heel that King had to -literally- fight back from his knees to overcome.
I agree with Taz(z). Dutt's suit was indeed snazzy!
Hosslander and Velvet are developing some really good ring chemistry, and Velvet is on her way to being a darned good pro wrestler. Some of Highlander's strength spots were really impressive!
It was cool seeing the lion mark symbol lit up between the AEW entrance tunnels. I loved how that match built and built without ever getting too flashy. I felt like Ospreay showed admirable restraint and gave his partners plenty of room to shine.
FTR leaning in for the hot tag was such a classic pro wrestling visual. Maybe the highlight of the show for me.

Also, to keep it on topic, hard agree with your preview of Kingston/Hager - I expect some bombs.
I don't think that "a clash of styles" (between a trained MMA fighter and a wild, angry brawler) precludes bombs being thrown. I'm just expecting them to throw different types of bombs.

why All-Atlantic? It just seems like a weird thing to be the champion of. Is Aquaman a contender?
Is it possible you are conflating Atlantic and Atlantis here? In my opinion, those are different things.
That being said, I'd be more than fine with them bringing Drum-playing Octopus in for a shot at the title.
Which reminds me: @Octopus, can you play the drums?

I wonder if he hit In-N-Out when AEW was in Cali? Probably not, or we would have seen a tweet. No Takeshita Morishima announced for this show, anyhoo.
What has been announced:
Trent & FTR vs Ospreay and Ozzy O'Penn: It's fun when something good is coming and you know it's going to surprise people and you can anticipate the positive reactions. By this time next week we're all going to be hoping for more of Fletcher and Davis. I'm as confident about that as @A_K was about Punk's in-ring stumbles being a work, there being nothing factual about the MJF/Tony Khan schism, and AEW's early ratings decline during the 2019/20 playoffs portending certain doom for the promotion.
Jay Lethal & Satnam Singh vs Sex Bob-Om: Nothing against Vega & Fitchett, but I don't expect them to make the same kind of impression as Aussie Open. They are both very good, but I assume they are being brought in to get squashed, this week.
Even I am finding it hard to work up much enthusiasm w/r/t The Surly Green Giant. He certainly is large.
Edit: Now @Go2Sleep has me feeling cautiously optimistic. Hooray!
Red Velvet vs Kirsten Highlander: Cake vs Alien was a natural match-up. Baddie vs bad-ass might be even better.
Eddie Kingston vs Ripped Jake Hager: A clash of styles! This could be sneaky good. I am curious to see what they bring out of each other.
Hookhausen appearance: I was searching for Hooters on my tablet because my friend and I wanted to eat a lot of chicken wings and the options for that are relatively limited here in Japan. My autocomplete assumed I was typing Hookhausen. That made me smile.
Hooters Osaka is permanently closed. There are other options, though not so much for Buffalo style wings. Sekai no Yamachan is reliably tasty, and closer to home Tebasu's dry curry wings are delicious. I might get a bottle of Frank's from Amazon and improvise.
Edit: And thus the circle of lardilization continues to continue.
SpoilerKotoge once told me that, when they went to America for the Chikara trios tournament, Harada had his first cheeseburger before they'd even left the airport.

Is Danielson going to be at Forbidden Door? If so, who is he wrestling? Not Okada, not Tanahashi, not Osprey, most likely not Shingo... I'm not that excited about anyone else.
If he's close to 100% by the show I'd have to imagine he'll be featured. We all know that the chance to work in Japan was part of what sold him on going to AEW. Maybe ZSJ? he was talking that up recently.
Bryan vs Zack or Bryan and Yuta vs Zack and MiSu (or Despy or, say, TAKA) would be well worth getting excited about, in my opinion.

I want an 8-man hair vs hair tournament next, with the loser of each match forced to undergo the ultimate humbling of having their head shaved.
Maybe: Dax, Scorp, Lethal, Alan 5 Angels, Luther, Silver, Blade, and Cutler?
Also, Ospreay vs Archer from the 2019 New Japan Cup remains one of the very best matches I have ever seen live. He bumped like Darby in that one.
Jacked up Ospreay still freaks me out a little. I keep forgetting he hit the weights during plague times.

You shouldn't be. The Arena Anarchy match was a glaring flashing blinking light as to what Jericho's hair really looks like. He has a pretty bad Shawn Michaels thing going when he can't keep it dry. Almost the Bill Murray from Kingpin. I noticed this the night of the PPV and had assumed Jericho watched the match back and decided he didn't want that to be his look. But instead of a radom hair style change he went old school and went to TK about a hair match to get something positive out of it.
Yeah, but..
Imagine the embarrassment, the utter humiliation of losing a hair match!
Can you possibly conceive of how awful it would be to go out in public with your head shaved like some kind of bald-headed circus geek?
I shudder to think. A fate worse than death.
SpoilerOn the other hand: If anyone can sell that, it's Chris Jericho

I can remember joking around on these boards when AEW was first starting up that they should be the All Tournaments All The Time promotion.
I don't think the deal is that Tony Khan still lurks here or that he has someone mining this board for ideas. I think it is that he thinks about and enjoys pro wrestling in the same way we do. That is what I think the deal is.
I love moving straight from the Owen into the All Atlantic Tournament.
Also, I don't want to be a pedantic nit-picker
Spoilerthat is obviously not the case. I am clearly being a pedantic nit-picker.
But in my opinion The Orient and New Zealand are not on the Atlantic.
I wonder who the Oriental participants will be! Bad Luck Fale and Yoshi-Hashi, maybe?
There was too much really good pro wrestling today. I feel overstuffed now. All you can eat nachos, wings, and garlic shrimp. I'm not complaining. I am delirious.
And so much potentially GREAT wrestling coming up, as well. FTR and Trent vs United Empire?!?! Good heavens!
I think I enjoyed Hangman vs Finlay the most out of all the very good matches today. Like Dean pointed out, it's the lock-ups.
Shafir never looks awkward on the YouTube shows. People who don't watch Dark probably don't appreciate her the way she deserves.
PAC vs Buddy was a whole lot of muscle action.
Mox vs Kyle was intense.
Tana vs Goto is also a foregone conclusion but will likely also be very good. I am stoked for Mox vs Tana and happy that it will not be a foregone conclusion.
There was a huge chunk of time, maybe six years or so, from when Osaka Pro basically closed down to when AEW started up, when the lion's share of my pro wrestling watching was interesting old matches. And that was FUN. But having new pro wrestling to look forward to every week is even better. Genuinely adds something to my quality of life. I'm just a little bit stoked up all the time now.

You better buy up; there's a domestic popcorn shortage due to people going back to the movies. I doubt that will affect Japan but you never know. (What do the Japanese like to snack on at the movies, anyway?)
Popcorn.
Edit: Sometimes caramel popcorn or a caramel/salty mix. Occasionally they'll offer BBQ or corn pottage flavour. I always get that, if it's on offer.
I usually also sneak sour gummy candies in, as well.
Oh, and you can get beer at cinemas here. (Insert Marcellus Wallace quote).

I love battle royals. (Battles Royale?)
Give me darn near any battle royal from darn near any pro wrestling promotion to watch, and I'll be happily entertained for the duration. And, if Andre is involved, I will be delighted for the duration.
A battle royal is like a nice plate of nachos. Not the best food in the world, but almost always enjoyable. And if you turn your nose up at either of them, I have to imagine it would be a drag to hang out with you.
Give me a battle royal that is gonna be loaded with pro wrestlers I really like, with some stakes attached, with the winner subsequently fighting (and probably - but not definitely - losing to) Mox for the right to face the winner of Ace vs Choker for the phony baloney title?!?!?! Oh baby! I literally bought some popcorn on the way home from work tonight. A battle royal, a main event Mox fight, and -what's that? Fit Finlay 's son fighting The Hangm'n as well?
You need more?
Well, we're probably getting more regardless. Maybe some more Ember Moon or Miro or Wardlow? That would make sense.
I kinda want Darby to win the battle royal. In my opinion, he and Mox match up really well. Or Hobbs or Lee or Miro or Bear Boulder or Buddy or JD or Archer or Comoroto or Dustin or a surprise return Kenny or Butcher or Dax or Rush or Wardlow or Toa Liona or Takeshita or Hook or Angelo Parker...
I was thinking about trying to get tickets to Dominion, at least in part because there might be some AEW guys showing up to promote Forbidden Door, you never know... but it looks like I'm just gonna go watch it on TV at my wrestling buddy's place.
Good week for wrestling, and also popcorn, is what I'm saying here.

"Not including your absolute favourite" is a weird criterion. Was that to prevent having most lists be "Bryan and three other wrestlers"? If so... only partly successful.
Anyway, I am reading a book called "They Just Seem a Little Weird" which is a history of Kiss, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, and Starz. Cheap Trick were one of my first favourite bands. Live at Budokan was the second record I bought with my own money. Then I got to see Misawa headline in the Budokan, almost 40 yeas later, and think to myself "I am in the same building where that record was recorded, watching my favourite wrestler! " which was a pretty cool feeling.
Hair rocker Sebastian Bach is quoted, on his love of Kiss: "I don’t judge them: Oh, they’ve got to top that last record. I look at it, like, This person is going to be dead one day, and I want as much art from them as they can possibly give me.”
Well... Damn straight!
That's why MiSu and Ishii both make my list. I want as much art (and violence) from them as they can possibly give me. Them touring around and playing the hits is all I need. It's sheer delight for me. And it warms my heart, deeply, to hear crowds all over going nutzoid for these guys doing their thing.
Eddie Kingston makes my list because he's the purest distillation of what I love most about AEW: The fact that great wrestlers who have been toiling in semi-obscurity (or being used to less than their full potential elsewhere) can be given a chance to fully shine in front of a massive international audience. Kingston has made himself into a star! That's kind of amazing. All he needed was the opportunity, but we can be forgiven for having once imagined that he would never get it.
Finally, Lulu Pencil. The pure embodiment of pro wrestling love and joy. The most uniquely charming character in pro wrestling today (which is really saying something).
A wrestling world in which Suzuki and Stone Pitbull are touring to rapturous reception, The Mad King is an international TV star, and Lulu Pencil has fans all over the world is a world I can fully enjoy living in.

I imagine it'll be Mox and we'll get the long-awaited Mox vs Tana match at Forbidden Door...
But I'd love an unexpected swing for the fences and have a big man like Hobbs or Keith Lee or Wardlow or Miro or, say, Brody King clear the ring and dominate the Battle Royal, then squeak out a banana peel win over Mox... Elevate one more guy into that Main Event/World Champion tier.
Maybe have a couple of guys get shortish runs before Punk comes back. Set them up as future contenders vs Punk.
But I would be fine, totally fine, with Mox.
Or Bryan. Or Kingston.
Or Tanahashi!

The Young Bucks and Lucha Brothers "all action, focus on creativity, speed, and athleticism" style isn't for everyone, I know. But if that is your cup of tea, nobody does it better (except perhaps Hiromu and Dragon Lee?). Those two teams have Rock'n'Rolls/Midnights Bulldogs/Harts level of ring chemistry. So much fun to get to see them fight again!
A surprise Hobbs & Starks squash match! Sure! Thank you! I'll take that!
I hope that Sir Mix-a-Lot was watching Hogan vs Athena, because I have to imagine he would have really enjoyed that. I also enjoyed that, but for different,hard-hitting pro wrestling type, reasons.
So I am sure the whole confusing Punk thing will have been clearly explained by the time I finish typing. At least we get a battle royal out of it. And a Mox match. I like both of those things!
It was hard to concentrate on the TNT Title match because I was trying to work out the Punk title situation with my AEW chat buddies. Then they explained it. Just in time for me to catch Dante flying. He is one spectacular athlete.
Scorp's belt and Lakers gear both looked great.
We might get that long-awaited Moxley vs Tanahashi the Ace of The Orient match, now.
Feel bad for Punk. Feel excited to see what comes next.
That was some compelling television.

Rampage: 11 am Japan time this week I believe. Back to our regularly scheduled timeslot. Check your local listings.
YOUNG BUCKS vs LUCHA BROTHERS!!!!!! It's in California. Will the Bucks get face reactions like Britt in Pittsburgh or MJF in Long Island? Every time these teams meet, it's insane.
Also: Ember Moon Athena makes her AEW in-ring debut, vs Hulk Hogan! (note: it is possible I misheard or misread something there). AEW's womens division keeps getting stronger! I am looking forward to this one. If I understand correctly,it's a Booker T trainee vs a Mr. Hughes trainee. I don't think I have actually seen Athena wrestle before, but I have heard good things. Hogan is definitely better in the ring than her namesake, in my opinion.
And Dante vs Scorp in a title match!! Same question: Will the SoCal guy with the Kobe tribute belt get cheers in The Forum? Dante Martin is from Minnesota, I believe. So are the Lakers! That's why they are called the Lakers. It's not like Los Angeles is famous for its lakes (nor is Utah famous for Jazz).
I wonder how Jazz and Rodney Mack are doing.

Maybe I really am a mark, because I loved the whole card and I think the main event of Dark really helped get the crowd hot for the rest of the show.
I am definitely a mark, and proud of it.
I believe that originally the term applied to carnival workers surreptitiously "marking" the clothing of carnival-goers who could easily be fleeced. Targets for the con.
Then, it meant the locals who would be fleeced out of their money by gambling on "fixed" wrestling matches.
Then for a long time it meant a person who attended pro wrestling matches but was not aware of the worked nature of pro wrestling. Someone who believed that the matches and outcomes were genuine and not predetermined.
What does the term mean now? There are likely still a few people for whom the prior definition holds true. The very young, some of the very elderly, certain people who are cognitively impaired, perhaps...
I think maybe these days marks are fans who (choose to) buy into the characters and emotional beats? Someone who chooses to use their disposable income on tickets, streaming memberships, and merch?
These days, a pro wrestler trying to insult a fan by calling them a "mark" is kind of embarrassing. You have devoted your whole life to "the business" pally. Who is the real "mark" now?
Wrestling fans trying to insult other pro wrestling fans by calling them "marks" is the saddest of the sad.
Frankie Kazarian angrily yelling "Mark!" at people, however, is hilarious .
While we are it it: I am not generally a fan of "worked shoots" but I do not understand using "business exposing" as a criticism thereof. "Exposing" to whom? The marks?
We're all "smart" now.
And we, here, are all marks.

AEW - JUNE 2022
in ALL ELITE WRESTLING
Posted · Edited by Gordlow
I think we need more Les Kellett tribute acts, personally.
I feel confident in asserting that Bryan Danielson vs ZSJ would all but certainly be something you'd enjoy very much.
It's also likely that Ishii, Suzuki, Cobb, and Yano will all be involved in one way or another, and that should be fun, too.
