  1. Nah, a twat is someone who makes shit up and pretends other people have said those things. Like you just did. So you’re the twat Because I never said people can only like what’s popular or that you’re not allowed to have personal opinions on things. Simply said that the only impartial metric of how a TV show is performing is the number of people who are watching. But feel free to continue to make shit up and be a dick. Or twat. Whatever you prefer.
  2. Some of those instances did exist, sure. But saying it was all like that is patently false. For example, the Rock’s heel turn in the fall of 98 was some of the best writing in wrestling history, period.
  3. Looks like Sydal is done with Impact and both AEW and WWE want him. Because AEW doesn’t have enough guys that look and wrestle like him yet.
  4. Nobody wants Russo’s bad tendencies. But then you have the opposite extreme where everything is “I’m the best and I Want the belt” and they beat you over the head with it for two hours. Shit gets boring.
  5. I agree very much with this. I used to get so annoyed when people would complain about “how dare you take away from the match by talking about something else?!” It added to the show. It made the things that were more important feel more important. And it gave things a sense of unpredictability which is so missing today. I too loved Nitro and appreciated what they offered. But I also appreciated what Raw was doing, for different reasons.
  6. Disagree. Nitro 99 devoted way more time to wrestling than Raw and didn’t have almost any stories playing out throughout the show apart from the main event. It certainly wasn’t as fast paced as Raw.
  7. Going back and watching some 84 Mid South for shits and giggles. Those Hacksaw Duggan music videos are... something.
  8. I wasn’t referring to Russo’s work in WCW. I meant the pacing from 95/96 compared to 99 before Russo came in while he was still writing for WWF.
  9. Was his early 90’s WCW booking similar?
  10. That had more to do with the ridiculous contracts handed out and taking the TV on the road in a foolish way. They were actually in the black in 2008/2009. Its a shame they didn’t just stay the course and went with Hogan and Bischoff. That crash TV format was netting them close to 2 million viewers.
  11. I was hoping for crash TV segments mixed with quality wrestling. Instead we got meaningless long matches, basic “I’m the best, I want the belt” storylines, barely any character development. The viewership plummeted to record lows and they got kicked off POP. To be fair, Sonjay was really the one writing. The last couple weeks have been an improvement. They still have the good matches but now there are actually story threads happening throughout the show. I like what they’re doing with Killer Kross.
  12. But people have different opinions on what quality is. Therefor the only impartial metric of whether a wrestling TV show is performing or not is based on yes, how many people watch.
  13. Or before that we had the Dungeon of Doom.
  14. Not about grasping it. More so dismissing it because most people use it as a way to try to convince others that a show’s quality should be judged based on what their opinion is.
  15. I mean, there’s ways you can circumvent that. You don’t need to go full bore with it. Instead of giving everyone a meaningful storyline start with 70% or so. Instead of having crash tv all over your show, intertwine it with quality matches so you can have the best of both worlds.
  16. The pacing of Nitro didn’t change much from 95/96 to 99, which is what you cited. And the storylines were equally as bad during both periods, before the nWo.
  17. Fuck this mindset, its so beyond stale. It makes it supposedly impossible for any storyline to land.... yet people were hooked every week and couldn’t wait to watch. You may not have liked it but clearly a lot of people did. Nitro was good too in a different way. But citing Nitro, which 1999 WWF, the worst year in pro wrestling according to you, was kicking the shit out of on a weekly basis using the same formula you’re shitting on... doesn’t do much for your argument.
  18. I like your posts Beech. You lay stuff out in a logical manner and make me see things from a different POV. And yes, they don’t need them and I don’t see what it does for them in terms of growing the fanbase outside of who they already have. But I do see why they would want one, based on the things you said.
  19. 100% agree. I’m in that boat. There’s no reason why you can’t write that type of show today without all the super crude stuff. And is there anyone other than Russo that can write that type of show? I don’t want him back... but I also don’t see anyone else that can write a show where things are actually happening. It seems like 90% of shows today are guys telling each other they’re the best or they want the belt.
  20. Been watching Smackdown from fall of 1999 lately. The Good House keeping stuff with Jarrett and Chyna was hella entertaining. I feel like that was the most over Jarrett was with the crowd ever. Also, they had a super stacked tag division. Outlaws, Holly’s, Acolytes, X-Pac/Kane, Dudley’s, Edge/Christian, Hardy’s, and a few more. The shows are pretty entertaining. Everyone had a story and something going on. Wish there was someone out there who can write a show using Russo’s strengths without his negatives.
  21. What do they really need from NJPW after they get Omega?
  22. He basically just said he’d like to have around 30 or so contracted performers.
  23. Well, according to Cody they want about 30 contracted wrestlers. So more or less they have 1/3rd of that already. Most of them look and wrestle the same so far. I’m hoping they make an effort to bring in more big guys who wrestle a brawling style.
  24. Also, Jungle Boy is like a Young Buck clone. Minus the crazy hair. They desperately need to start diversifying that roster.
  25. Well I posted the episode so clearly I’m following it. And it remains to be seen if they can effectively introduce characters to a new audience. And I’m not talking about slapping a nickname in someone and saying “That’s Lucha Royalty!” like most wrestling companies do these days. The last guy I can say that was effectively brought in with a distinct character and built up from scratch was EC3 in Impact 2013. That’s the kind of presentation I’d like to see more of.
