  1. Are you saying Batman doesn't want to just have fun and entertain the fans?
  2. I'm assuming they'll run an angle, because of course they will. Who takes the bump? I'm not sure D'lo bumping for Droz and letting Droz get his "revenge" would exactly constitute taking the high road. But it certainly beats the alternative, where the handicapped guy bumps for the wrestler who accidentally paralyzed him. I'm hoping the promoter doesn't do anything distasteful with these two, but I'm not optimistic.
  3. I thought that was because we have more members who need lawyers.
  4. Lol, I ask those questions about most wrestling merch. And most stuff they sell at pop culture stores like Hot Topic and the like. Last time i went to a Gamestop, the games were kinda hidden behind a mound of t-shirts and those Funko pop doll things or whatever they are called. I assume it's the same couple dudes buying everything.
  5. FWIW, Meltzer has said on a couple occasions that Nakamura's jump to the WWE was partly because "he saw the writing on the wall." I don't recall Dave quite explaining what he meant, but from the context of the conversations, I assumed he meant that Nak thought he might break down physically sooner instead of later if he stayed in NJPW.
  6. Wait, you can ignore trolls on the internet? Why didn't they tell us sooner? I feel like this thread would be eight pages shorter if Marvel fired a key grip for making racist/sexist remarks on social media (I'm not even sure what Gunn is supposed to have said).
  7. I thought the last season of Angel had strong episodes, but also feel like the kind of dumbed it down. IRRC, Fox wanted the show to be more accessible and less serialized so they kinda shifted away from having one season-long arc and made the episodes more self-contained. Didn't work, obviously, as they still got canceled. I probably should go back and watch season 5, see if my feelings have changed. I remember liking a lot of the single episodes. I'm still amazed that David Boreanaz has gone 20+ years without being unemployed. In Hollywood, that's a feat. But, yeah, in general, Angel has aged a lot better for me than Buffy.
  8. True. And I'm just starting to dig into the Saturn catalog, but it definitely had a lot of fun games, so I may appreciate it more when I have a more Saturn games and a better handle of how much of the catalog is on my wish list. I miss Sega. They took risks and released some truly creative stuff that they couldn't possibly have thought would sell well (Seaman? Segagaga? The bus driver tourist game. One mistake which was probably fatal for them was basically pulling the plug on the Saturn a full year before the Dreamcast launched. That's a long time to give up shelf space and market presence to N64 and PSOne. Sega wasn't alone in misjudging what consumers would want out of hardware in the early 2000's. I like Nintendo's IP's a lot, and thus like the GameCube, but Nintendo made some terrible decisions about hardware. The mini-discs, which made using the console as a DVD player impossible, no USB support. It was way too hard to figure out how to transfer saves from my PC to the Dreamcast. Micro SD card? Really. And try to find a micro SD card under 4GB in 2018, lol. It's weird. Ps2 is probably my favorite console by a wide margin, but Sony is a distant third behind Sega and Nintendo. Ok, talking about Sega has weakened my resolve. I am off to eBay to throw down some decent cash for expensive rare Saturn games. And maybe Shenmue. Oh, hell, definitely Shenmue.
  9. I really enjoyed Buffy back in the day, but it's not aged well for me. It's one of those things I'm not quite embarrassed to admit I like, but have no interest in seeing again in any way, shape, or form - even if it's only watching a couple min of tv. Basically, it's Seinfeld. Though I'd watch a Buffy marathon way before I rewatch another episode of Seinfeld. Interestingly, I'm still a Whedon fan. I've never hated any of his work, and still enjoy things like Angel (save the last season), Firefly, Avengers, etc.
  10. What's the over/under on how many times Rippa locks this thread before the October PPV?
  11. I had no idea that was what Dan Harmon looked like. I always pictured someone much different. And, really, so long as people leave the cesspool of human DNA that is Twitter, does it really matter why?
  12. I kinda feel that way, too, but this also reminds me of a couple other crossovers by (female) sci-fi/fantasy/horror novelists who have taken comic gigs during the past 20 years, and I don't know that any of those gigs generated better sales or were that great creatively. Rachel Pollack took several DC/Vertigo assignments during the mid-90's and I don't think DC got much return out of that. DC gave a strong PR push to her Doom Patrol run, but sales weren't good and, creatively, it felt like there was a very conscious book to ape what Morrison did, both in tone and writing style. I don't think she really brought much of a following to DP and DP diehards kinda turned on the book because it seemed too close to what Morrison had just done better. Her New Gods run was kinda bad and Time Breakers didn't sell (which is a shame; the writing is skippable, but the Chris Weston art is outstanding). This also puts me in mind of Nancy A. Collin's run. DC hired her to Swamp Thing in the 90's when she was a sorta big deal. Her vampire novel, Sunglasses After Dark, was released in 1989 and got her a lot of critical praise and was a good-sized hit. She definitely had a following, but those people didn't follow her to Swamp Thing and, creatively, the book was Alan Moore-lite (though that's true of basically every reboot of Swampy since Moore). My opinion was that she never really figured out how to tell a story in 28 pages a month instead of 300 pages published whenever. Hopefully, Maguire will fare better. It's certainly not a bad idea. But it seems like most of these novelist crossover gigs kinda peter out without the hoped-for sales boost. Then again, Marvel has hired Reginald Hudlin and CM Punk as writers, so Maguire will presumably be a huge step-up from them (disclaimer: I've never read anything CM Punk has written. I have read Hudlin's BP run. Ugh.)
  13. Well, you can buy the console at a retro store or eBay for about $50 - aka roughly the price of one PS4 game. I'm a much bigger fan of the Dreamcast than the Saturn. Saturn has a deep catalog, but I also look at it and see mistakes Sega made on the business side. Not giving the Saturn a proper Sonic platformer or three really hurt it. And I personally like the catalog, but the Saturn's best games don't stack up well to the n64's top 10 (Zelda's, Mario 64, etc.). The N64 had a lot fewer games - and a lot fewer very good-great games - than the Saturn but the N64 had killer app-level games to drive sales. The problem with the Saturn, imo, is that the hardware and catalog were tied to closely to arcade ports. The catalog is a lot more appealing if you're into 2D shooters and fighting games. Arcades were starting to become obsolete and console games were beginning to become more complex. With the Playstation One, Sony did a lot better job judging the changing marketplace. They offered a wider variety of games and put more emphasis on complex, long-term playability. If you were even slightly into RPG's back then, the PSOne had a bunch of triple-AAA titles.
  14. Are we talking Kerry Von Erich in Texas or mostly aimless midcarder Texas Tornado Kerry Von Erich? Count me in the crowd that doesn't get Matt Riddle. I don't really dislike him. More like i don't have a strong feeling about him one way or the other. I'd probably prefer to watch Roman Reigns, for whatever that's worth, and I'm mostly indifferent to Roman. Matt Riddle is the most methodist of method actors. Who knew?
  15. President Trump is making more sense than usual.
  16. I really wasn't into gaming in the late 90's and when I did pick up a PS2 a few years later, it was strictly "buy whatever EB Games has on the shelf." Wasn't really aware of imports outside of FPR and KOC II until sometime in the past 5-7 years. Someone mentioned on a retro games podcast I listened to recently that you could walk into EB Games and buy a PAL copy of Shenmue II (for the Dreamcast) and a boot disc. That blew my mind. I assume that, if you walk into a chain store in 2018 and ask about a boot disc, they have security escort you to the Microsoft dungeon. BTW, anyone collect hardware? I've got plenty of games that need played, so, for a bit I'm mostly picking up hardware and accessories for retro systems. I'll still grab a system if I see something at a great price or something rare (generally a rare import that's gonna cost me at least $100), but my interest right now is consoles - especially import consoles. Grabbed several import PS2's because they were from limited Japan-exclusive series (the metallic PS2's they released in Japan when the console passed 50 mil in sales, for example) and a few import launch consoles. Paid way too much for one of the rare white original Xbox's that was released in Japan to celebrate the Xbox's second anniversary in Japan. I'm probably lucky that variant consoles didn't really become that bif of a thing till after the PS2. Most of the limited editions and color variants released before the PS2 strike me as ugly and uninteresting. The Nintendo 64, for example, put out a lot of variant colors but most of them are astoundingly hideous. I do have a gold import N64 (exclusive to Toy R US in Japan and the US).
  17. Beat me to it, but, yeah, she's had 30 or so books published in the last ten years. She writes urban fantasy under her own name and sci-fi/horror under pen names. I've never read her stuff but a couple people at the local bookstore love her. I do know she's been nominated for a host of prestigious awards (Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy Award). No idea if she won or not. About five years ago, she set some sort of record by being nominated for five Hugo awards (under both her real name and pen name(s). Her name alone won't sell me a book but it seems like a good pickup for Marvel. I used to love their lineup of writers but, post-Secret Wars, not so much.
  18. True. I kinda misspoke. Dreamcast is very easy to mod. I do own a couple boot discs to play PAL games (Shenmue II) but I also own a Japanese Dreamcast. Lol, and I still haven't looked to see how to mod a Saturn. I bought a Japanese Saturn before a NTSC-U/C Saturn. Point was, both consoles have import-heavy catalogs, so if you just relied on the games released to Gamestop or whatever, the catalogs probably didn't seem that great.
  19. Lol, wait till the PPV. I'm hoping for the best, but three hours of "Slut' chants won't surprise me in the least. This. x about 10. They would't really go into this with Alexa and Carmella as champs, would they? 2 short title matches that consist of little actual wrestling and a lot of screeching and hair pulling isn't going to help the cause. I'd vote to leave those two off the card entirely, but that's not realistic, at least in Alexa's case. Carmella was basically off SDL for six months or so, so she could be omitted once she drops the belt and few people would probably notice.
  20. Coach finishing that thought (I'm being generous here) had the potential to be both the high point and low point of the show. At the same time.
  21. I never played any Sega back in the day. Literally. Never owned a Sega system, never played a Sonic the Hedgehog game until this year. I was wrong. Terribly, terribly wrong. Really digging the Sega systems. Not so much Genesis, but Saturn and especially Dreamcast have deep. wacky catalogs. Not sure how people enjoyed either console without modding their console or just buying a Japanese console, though. So many great imports.
  22. My guess (given how tone deaf Vince generally is): WWE That Time of Month
  23. I really thought Shelley would become a much bigger deal. He seemed at ease in the role of faction leader during the GN days and I kinda assumed he would become a top singles guy on the indy scene (and hopefully parlay that into a WWE job or spot at top of TNA's card). And his initial run in TNA made it seem like he'd get a nice push. Instead, he became a tag team guy and stayed in that spot for 10+ years. There are worse fates. TimeSplitters and Motor City Machine Guns were both pretty over in a lot of places. Still seems like Shelley could have done better if things had broken differently for him. Yeah, at one point, i thought the top heels on the indys during the later 2000's/early 2010's would be Jimmy Rave and Alex Shelley. Missed by a wide margin on those two.
  24. For the record, I think the downfall of society - or, at least, the internet - was high-speed connectivity. At least, with dial-up, you had to be smart enough to remember your password, type it correctly, and hit enter. High-speed internet removed the hurdles of signing on. AOL passwords were basically a digital version of natural selection. Who knew?
  25. After watching the trailers, I'm actually interested in Aquaman and ready to check out on Shazam. I really hope Shazam isn't as silly as the trailer made it seem.
