  1. So I guess I'm the only one who actually doesn't want to see Do Hoo Choi - Swanson 2 sooner rather than later? Don't get me wrong, I loved that fight but I'd hate to see Choi take another beating like that so young into his career. Give Do Hoo Choi a relative softball or two in 2017 and at the same time see if Swanson can get to a title fight then revisit these two in late 2018 depending on their career trajectories. I get that that means potentially never seeing a rematch but at this point I don't see how an immediate fight between the two benefits anyone but the audience.
  2. The momentum swings from both sides have been nuts. I thought both were done multiple times.
  3. I'm surprised Choi's head hasn't spun around Exorcist style from some of those punches. You know he'd keep coming forward too. This is insane.
  4. Filipino Eduard Folayang just TKO'd the shell of Shinya Aoki to win the ONE LW Title. Aoki clearly still had the technique but just didn't look in fight shape. Still a huge win for the Filipino fighter and I think the first of the big ONE names to lose.
  5. Easy now - he probably earned that payday. His fight alone probably brought in enough to justify his paycheck (based on this thread at least). You could argue that he didn't deserve to be on the main card / taking a spot away from somebody who deserved it but that only made sense in 2003/4 again when UFC was running 5-6 shows a year and putting the dude who beat Kimbo on a ppv card. Oh shit, guess the next fight stated? I'm out.
  6. Have you ever sat there staring at a light, hoping to see it come on? That's me right now. I'm going to duck out of this thread right now and catch the replay later on.
  7. My power cut as soon as this show started. Came back on and Gall was on top 30 seconds in. Electricity stayed on just long enough to see Punk tap and went off again. Just hoping it comes back before the next fight or the main event at least but am not optimistic.
  8. That's a fair argument but not exactly an epidemic in the sport. McGregor and Silva are the only champions in history who have fought non-title catchweight fights unless I am forgetting someone. That's why I think this argument is a bit over-the-top. It rarely, rarely happens and I think we're a bit early to be calling to eliminate all titles. I get that you meant that it frees up match-makers to put on whatever fight people want to see but I think we get that 99% of the time anyway without having to make all fights catchweight. In GSP's case, if he's re-committing himself to the sport why not do the Woodley-GSP fight? Sucks for Thompson but you can make the argument for the fight. If it's not Woodley or he's just back for a one or two fight stint - well, everyone's going to want that money fight. Are there other champions calling out GSP for a catchweight fight? I honestly don't know. I get your point and agree to a certain extent - I was fine with McGregor taking the first Diaz fight but feel that by the time the rematch was announced the FW title should have been vacated. Where we disagree is on how severe of a problem this is and how much it really affects a fighters legacy.
  9. Either way I commend you on calling out that only Sean Sherk remembers Sean Sherk.
  10. Yeah I can't really dispute that. I didn't mean immediate title shot or anything but even one less significant win on your way to the title can be a life-saver.
  11. He was lightweight champion. You're right, the alpha-champions will always be remembered, As it stands now, will Dos Anjos be better remembered in 15 years than Diaz, I'm not sure. Titles change hands quickly, unless you go on a major run you're likely to get lost in the historical legacy shuffle.
  12. But really, they don't need to be mutually exclusive. Diaz IS closer to a title shot now by going 1-1 in high profile fights. Just having his name explode as it has guarantees he'll need to win less fights between title shots. And these big fights are rare. We're talking two guys right now who everyone wants to fight aren't we?
  13. I don't think it's so much the talent gaps but that some people move the ppv buys than others and get bigger purses because of it. Rousey did pretty good as a pay per view draw, didn't she? During her run there was a bigger perceived skill gap than in the flyweight division or during Silva's run. I have to disagree with the idea of 'anybody can be punched in the head for a living' - sure, but there's something to be said about working your way up to the point where you can get a massive payday for it. Even before the Diaz series, anybody would have lined up for a fight with McGregor because you know you were gonna get PAID for it. There are realistically very few fighters who get that attention so it's not like these types of dream matches will ever be more than rare. I bet if Diaz could go back and have fought for the LW title with the same results (win the title, lose the rematch) he probably would have still preferred to stick with this reality even if it means never winning the title. He's probably made 2-3 times as much money and has another huge pay day in his future. Titles are great and all but if you have the opportunity to basically set yourself for life from one or two fights, you've gotta jump on that opportunity.
  14. Same here. re : rubber match - Does Dana choose McGregor fights though? Ediy : Well there ya go. At 155.
  15. And he knows he's probably up on the scorecards and the less he engages, the fewer opportunities Nate has to counter. Damnit - finally the takedown with 10 second left. Great fight -lived up to the hype.
  16. McGregor looks like he's made all of the right adjustments in the stand up game. This isn't looking good for Diaz. I think Diaz got pretty shook up by that first big shot - interested to see what he does from here.
  17. Was that the women's 10,000 m yesterday? That was incredible watching the pace they set and I'm pretty sure the top 3 broke the olympic record and 4th place was like a second shy of it. Also the woman who set the early pace spit, like, a lot, didn't she? In my mind it was a long distance version of Mario Kart and she was dropping oil slicks at the runners behind her. But seriously, I thought you'd be savouring every last drop of saliva. Though I can't relate at all and I'm 100% sure I would have been lapped in the first km.
  18. Is this mma's equivalent of a spotfest? I thought things were looking bleak for Cacares when he was slowing down going into round 2 and Rodriguez was still looking strong but things have really evened out in round 3. Fun fight. Edit : Did I hear right? 49-46 Cacares? Not saying it wasn't close but I didn't see how it could have been scored 49-46 for Cacares. I thought the right guy won in the end at least.
  19. I've got judo on two different channels right now and am a happy man, More than that, we've had all of the judo grand slam semi-finals and finals/bronze matches from the past two years airing live on 'Fight Sports' so I actually have a far better understanding of the sport this olympics.
  20. And that wraps up what must have been the biggest 3 days in mma history. Crazy to think that UFC still has three more shows to run in July.
