Great American Bash 1990 as Sting beat Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship

    I was at that show!

Lance Storm told a story on this week’s Alvarez show where he asked Sting back in the day why he never signed with WWF in the 80s/90s and Sting told him something to the effect of, “every time I talked to them, they were more about how signing me would hurt WCW than about how it would help them.”  GOD DAMN, we should all strive to be that good a dude.

Lord yes.  Every Miro tweet and anecdote makes it abundantly clear why WWE didn’t push him.

  3. Yeah, Claudio vs a guy in a Monchichi mask going 15 minutes was too fucking long.  Someone who knows more about Lucha than I do, please dispel my belief that we’re now getting the CMLL B team because of the latest visa problem.

As an avid Bossman Slam enthusiast, I was legit worried Dutch would tag out before hitting his glorious slam.  But my worries were unfounded!

  4. I'm not much of a figure guy but I do buy figs of wrestlers I like.  My local Wal Mart had 1-2 figs from AEW's newest line in stock last weekend, so I picked up Brody King.  It's a good fig but not big enough.  A little too fit and trim.  Contrast that with my Eddie Kingston fig, who has traps bigger than Lesnar.

March sees Sting's last wrestling match at AEW Revolution

Wow.  The first time I ever saw him wrestle live was maybe two years into his career, in 1987!

    JCP @ Baltimore, MD – Arena – July 12, 1987 (13,500)
    Misty Blue defeated Kat Leroux
Terry Gordy (sub. for Buddy Roberts) defeated Thunderfoot #1
Rick Steiner (sub. for Black Bart) defeated Sting
Jimmy Garvin defeated Manny Fernandez via disqualification
NWA US Tag Team Champions Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane defeated Michael Hayes & Buddy Roberts (sub. for Terry Gordy)
    Barry Windham defeated Big Bubba
Ron Garvin defeated NWA US Tag Team Champion Bobby Eaton (sub. for an injured Jim Cornette); Cornette came out to the ring on crutches before the bout
UWF World Champion Steve Williams defeated Dick Murdoch
Nikita Koloff & the Road Warriors defeated NWA World Champion Ric Flair, NWA US Champion Lex Luger, & Arn Anderson in an elimination match
Dusty Rhodes defeated NWA TV Champion Tully Blanchard in a non-title barbed wire match

Fun Great American Bash show (non-PPV) as far as I can remember, except the main event, which is a study in the carny arts.  The whole show went long and the announcer (maybe Cappetta) told us all not to worry...they were "granted a curfew extension by the arena" and we would definitely get our main event!  Dusty and Tully get in...Tully attacks Dusty...Dusty ducks and either hits Tully with some plunder or a bionic elbow (memory is hazy on that point) and pins him.  Time of the fall is probably 10 seconds.  I'm positive no "curfew extension" was granted.  More likely the promoter (Gary Juster?) begged and pleaded because losing the main due to curfew would mean refunds, thrown trash, etc., and the arena manager told them "fuck you, you have 30 seconds and that's it."

  6. Gym bitching...I hate these people:

    • People who tie knots in the long rope AND also don't untie them when finished (the rope used for stuff like lat pullovers).  There are already 2-3 short ropes with lovely rubber blocks on them.  WTF
    • People who, between sets, don't stay near the thing they're using
    • People who occupy the only machine of its kind in the gym (in my gym, it's incline barbell bench, hip thrust, pec deck, & hack squat) and take crazy long breaks between sets.  If I can knock out three different exercises (9 - 12 sets) while waiting for you to finish up, something is terribly wrong
    • Crowded gym supersetters
    • And, as always, groups of 5 high school boys, all with broccoli hair and Crocs, "working out" together ie using a bench for an hour.  I am dreading Summer.

    Re: International Version/Tape Delay

Hangman/Swerve/Joe Promo was an excellent bit of dueling mics. I’m with the Horseshit (1 fall) call on 3 ways, but I’m stoked nonetheless. BCC v FTR/Eddie felt like another minor classic on the way to two PPV masterpieces. I watched this twice, and loved it even more the second time. Jericho promo was pretty good, and along with the video gave us a nice set-up for the bout. Not sure what Renee was wearing there, but she finds a way to pull off this Susie Greene-esque choice. Ospreay/Callis Family promo was excellent. I welcome the mystery of Ospreay’s heavy accent. I love his energy and flow on the mic. Exciting times ahead. I love the hilarity of Don Callis as much as anything AEW has to offer. OC v Nick Wayne was good solid action leading to a huge dark horse v Roddy on this spectacular PPV card. Jay White/Asses/Assclaimed promo – sad emoji. Save Jay White. Skye v Stat was terrific. Skye Blue is having fun as a heel, and looking better every time out. I liked Jericho v Atlantis Jr. far more than I probably ought to have. This felt like a fun mid-show/not worried about the ratings Collision bout. Not to say this was a comedy bout, but I found myself highly amused. Bucks/Darby/Sting/Flair angle was pretty solid after the quick detour of Naitch reminded all of his last match. Loved how the Jacksons sold his flimsy offense. Like others have posted, I was watching this segment with my partner. Her excitement for the Sting rafter drop was infectious, and made this segment for me. I can’t remember a PPV line-up that I was more excited for than this. Goddamn, goddamn AEDub!

"Liked" just for the Suzie Greene reference.  I assumed it was a Julie Winters tribute but I also admit that's probably too deep a reference.

Note to Americans, "getting pissed with the missus" means something different in the UK.  I need to rewatch the Austin Powers "let's speak English English" scene to get ready for Will's run.

    Other notes:

    • God damn, The Bang Bang Scissor Gang is a waste of everyone involved, which is a tremendous accomplishment in mediocrity.  Its only saving grace would be if it ends in a blood feud where Billy Gun is forcibly retired and the belts are unified.
    • When did FTR changed the name of their finish back to "Shatter Machine?"  They had been calling it "The Big Rig" in tribute to Brodie Lee.
    • "40 extra black bats" is in Sting's rider with every venue.

And PWG is dead, for reals? Did Super Dragon totally retire?

Oh no, just on indefinite break.  Super Dragon posted on Twitter in November that the company is on hiatus because his girlfriend, who'd been in remission from cancer for some time, had been battling aggressive cancer since early 2023.  He mentioned that they'd be back as soon as they could in 2024.  The last show they did, which was in August, hasn't gone on sale on DVD or streaming but I don't really want to bug him.

I'm a big believer in the (Bill Watts?) philosophy that a regular tag team should always defeat two regular singles competitors thrown together in a one-off.

Conversely, when a guy that regularly works tag matches works a singles match against a regular singles competitor, the tag guy should lose.

    Booking logic.

    😄

    Check the post above yours

To add to this, a GREAT way to build your tag belts into something to be taken seriously and maybe main event shows: every once in a while, maybe on a big TV show, put your world champ and secondary champ against the tag team champions in a non title challenge match or, shit, if those two singles two champs are closely aligned, in a tag title match.  Then have your tag champs beat them clean.

  10. Eh, he's a tag team wrestler.  He should get beaten by skilled singles wrestlers.  Of course, two singles wrestlers thrown together should be beaten, the majority of the time, by an established tag team as well.

Do you think, Technico, that this story advanced Hangman as a character in the long term in some noticeable way? Does it feel like his character has evolved from where it was before?

I'm not sure, so I guess probably not.  I mean all the Punk shit happened, and all of it derailed whatever Hangman's story was supposed to be.  We never got the real payoff of "Hangman Page: Champion and Top Babyface" because TK figured Punk was the top and most visible guy and should be the champion.  So then Page meandered for a bit again, got injured, rejoined the Elite (thus abandoning the Dark Order, which is a real head scratcher), and then got in a feud with Swerve and is now ostensibly a heel.

So it's been a weird journey where he’s been aimless due to circumstances beyond his control.  I do like his current arc of being obsessed with the title and losing himself.  I hope this is some kind of Superman 4 thing where he sees what he's become and turns back, because he's really great as a wholesome yet asskicking babyface.

wierdly I understand the characters and the story without knowing anything that they said.

We're getting back into those glory days of "I have no idea what he's saying but I understand what's happening" now that Will Osprey is here.

  13. While absolutely a looser story, Hangman Page's storyline from the start of AEW to him winning the belt from Omega was definitely a good, long arc.  They could have absolutely hammered it home better, and ending it just to give that goof Punk a vanity reign was a massive misstep, but it was definitely a good, long story.  I'm probably missing some steps, getting some out of order, etc., but:

    1. Almost wins the belt from Jericho in the first title bout, gets too much too fast
    2. Meanders a while
    3. Tags with Kenny to win the tag belts
    4. That falls apart; Hangman talks about winning them back but Kenny wants nothing to do with the team, and turns heel
    5. Gets manipulated by FTR into screwing his longtime friends, the Bucks, so the whole Elite is gone and Hangman thinks it's his fault
    6. Is befriended by the Dark Order
    7. Gradually finds his confidence and strength through friendship, all the while Kenny is talking shit about how he'll always be below him
    8. Wins the world title

I'd argue that AEW's story quality hasn't been the same since then.  But you can put some of that at the feet of the Punk mess, Cole getting hurt, MJF getting hurt, and TK not really being the best at adjusting his booking plans due to injuries, etc.

That do-si-do spot would have worked so well against Juice/Switchblade. Doesn't work in a match with "real ones" like the BCC and with Kingston at your side. Just a matter of context

That's such a great point.  BCC"s gimmick is "we are legit fighters who would just as soon stab you as get you in a headlock."  Good call with the Rockers...them vs cartoon comedy goons like Akeem & Bossman?  Of course that spot works there.

I'll agree with this, particularly the dumb ass "do-si-do" spot. It's funny, they have the whole southern throwback tag thing going, but the second you put those guys into any kind of trios situation, you get a couple of those too-cute, PWG-esque moments. (Though I'm sure the Fantastics or another old school team escaping me probably did something similar as well - I said PWG before but I see the Memphis in it too)

On the flip side of the coin: one of my biggest gripes with their whole presentation at times can be the overly-serious nature (particularly Dax's promos, which we've discussed ad nausem) - I don't think it's the worst thing in the world for FTR to show a more lighthearted side in these kind of TV affairs once in a while, I just think it would've worked better/been more enjoyable as a standalone piece with (let's say) Best Friends or the Assboys on a Friday Rampage, as opposed to a PPV go home where they're across from the team they'll be in with on Sunday. From a story perspective, you'd wanna see those guys on BCC like Hanger was on Swerve, right?

Yeah, I don't think every FTR match needs to be a 30+ minute SERIOUS WRESTLING VERY IMPORTANT MATCH.  Their AEW run feels like an overcorrection of the ass cream and jester outfits stuff.

Also, I will brook no criticism of my beloved and sadly defunct Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.  We are now enemies.  Good day sir.
