assuming we are going off of currentish storylines. BUT because you said dream I’m treating it rightfully like Athena biggest show of the year. Free on television and it puts WWE out of business. Imagine I built everything up perfectly.

    YOUTUBE (technically not) DARK wrestling:

Dante and Darius Martin (612 chants ensues) vs Platnum Satnum & Jay Lethal (managed by Jeff Jarrett

    Nyla Rose vs Kiera Hogan

    Nick Wayne vs Mark Briscoe

QUAKE BY THE LAKE 2 - We’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat (Dynamite)

Show opens with WHAT THE FLIP? LUCHA MADNESS El Hijo Del Vikingo vs Komander vs El Soberano vs Mox?!?!?! Mox does a “I’m gettin too old for this shit promo” and gets his vacation.

Chris Jericho honors the legends of the AWA. Bockwinkel chants fill the arena. Jeff Jarrett comes out and calls Baron von Raschky a pussy. They’ll fight on Rampage for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre belt. Nothing saws AWA like that unnecessary gimmicks and a Jarrett….

LANCE ARCHER IN ACTION. He eats Serpentico. Challenges Eddie Kingston for future fun

Kingston comes out and flips him off. They brawl and get separated. Uh oh, the match scheduled next is Angelico vs Eddie Kingston for the Triple Crown or Continental whatever. Kingston is hurt and Angelico picks him apart. But Kingston’s American King’s Road is too great. Archer watches from the ramp and they will kill each other later.

Fun Toni Storm segment. WHAT THE HECK WHAT IS ATHENA DOING IN THE DYNAMITE ZONE. They fuck each other up. Holy fuck they hit each other good.

Scissor Fuckers vs Bang Bang Gang to unify the trios belts and end the stupid conglomerate that they have now. Daddy Ass and The Acclaimed to lots of taunts. Neat. Bang Bang Gang win with a returning Juice Robinson kicking Billy in the dick.

FTR do a promo about family. Young Bucks says no family fun on company time. Tension. They’ll match at a future PPV.

~RaNdOm DrEaM mAtCh~ BRYAN DANIELSON VS EL SATANICO

Kris Statlander & Willow Knightengale vs Serena Deeb & Thunder Rosa. It seems random, but the intrigue I create by the build will be written about for ages. At the end of the match they are all limpy and toe to toe. Then Brit Baler comes out with A RETURNING JAMEE HAYTER and oh shit everyone fights. Continental Classic for the women’s Division coming up.

MAIN EVENT: Samoa Joe vs RUSH FUCK YEAH!

    RAMPAGE - STILL QUAKIN’!

Penta vs RVD vs Claudio vs Big Bill (w/ Starks in his corner) stuff happens

Deonna Purrazzo vs Hikaru Shida. Good Stuff.

CHRIS JERICHO VS JEFF JARRETT IN A TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE DEATH MATCH FUCK YEAH.

Nice line-up. I'd really look forward to Joe v Rush. Great matchmaking!

Let's blow the roof off the place with a 'Cobra Corps' era Greg Gagne run-in. But... let's let the crowd decide which way he'll go. If the crowd is excited and chanting 'Gone-yay, Gone-yay' he'll save the Lionheart, and wave the banner of the American Wrestling Association. If the crowd takes the opportunity to show Greg their true feelings and they're not so pretty, Jarrett gets the assist. I like that scenario because then Greg could offer Jarrett the AWA TV Title, and we'll finally have enough belts to go around for everybody!

What do you think? Is it a Gone Baby Gone-Yay? Or is it a 'That Doesn't Work for me brother!'

God, there are so many reasons why I hate this angle (the "Rock is the boss" part of it anyway). I'll keep it short and go with:

    1. If they can just change the winners, there's no point in the conflict. Why remind us of that fact? "You know this doesn't really mean anything, buy our shit anyway"?

    2. It's already been done to death by someone everyone hates now and will be reminded of whenever they do it.

    3. "Fighting the man" doesn't play when these assholes can't even get together to unionize.

I whole-heartedly agree, but... nonetheless thought the Rock promo was as thrilling a quarter hour as I've seen. Whenever I skim WWETV I consistently ffwd Roman Reigns lengthy entrances/terrible CGI/catchphrases/ACTING/promos/etc. but here the Great One made a drippy Bloodline segment post-Zayn not only watchable, but fun even. Rock was a bit clumsy on some lines and used the term 'Punks' when there's a definitive Punk in the company, but it felt McMahon-free, and I loved it. Like everything I've seen of the Rock's heel return. Incredible! Incredible!

  3. Okay, I'll bite, and sorry for making it so wrestling-centric, but what would be your current day Octupii booked return of AEW's Quake by the Lake? Going on the precedent set by the inaugural 2022 show - give us (up to) 6 Dynamite dream matches and (up to) 3 Rampage-Baby dream matches plus a bonus 'In Action'.

I FFWD through the trios. Can’t stand Archer, can’t stand Vincent.

Haha, I totally get that. The booking of Lance Archer in AEW, if anyone cared, would have to be considered amongst the worst. Squash x 10, big loss, hiatus, rinse, repeat. Along with that all time rotten entrance music! Even tops Cody's shitty music. And yeah, Vincent is easily one of the most expendable commodities on the roster. But... Archer is clearly very talented and Dutch is so underrated. I like how those two behemoths have worked together thus far. I may be alone, but I really wanna see this team get a proper push. All the way to the top, Jack!

  5. I watched this lower end Rampage like it was a higher end current ROH on Honor Club show. I enjoyed Claudio v Rugido. Tho, it did feel like Dusty Wolfe getting far too much offense on Bad News Allen. It was a bit clumsy, but I love Claudio hugging Ruggy and then lower the boom. I also liked Claudio somersaulting onto the stage to pose. Joe/Swerve/Hanger video was good, the longer form Countdown show video was truly fucking awesome. More for the emotional Stinger/Darby packages. Good solid Archer/Dutch/Vincent squash. Dying for a Dutch/Archer tag run all the way to the top. I really wish they hadn't drained Dutch's credibility with that handicap loss to MJef. Maybe the rubes don't remember? Deonna/Toni video was good. Very much looking forward to this bout, and these two pros redeeming any sidesteps caused by the Madison Rayne match. Excellent Riho v Adora bout. Far and away the best Trish Adora match I've seen. I'd love to see her lean more in on a bully heel role. Riho is such a smart worker. She could seemingly pull a good match out of anyone. Ruby/Ange/Saraya/Harley/Zak Knight segment was the usual slight awkwardness into a nice heel attack. Ruby's acting portion didn't serve it so well, but the heels aren't joking around anymore. Knight was kinda impressive on ROH, so curious to see how he'll fit in. Magnus v Sydal was good. Selfless Sydal is on a nice run. I don't pay much mind toward the WO awards, but they really oughtta add a 'Best Mechanic' category for anybody with a very poor winning percentage. Sydal would be a great candidate. I caught the Countdown show on Youtube, and it nicely bookended the Saturday Morning Wrestling experience. Great, great videos on the 3 way and Sting/Darby v Bucks. Rampage-Baby!

  6. Re: International Version/Tape Delay

Hangman/Swerve/Joe Promo was an excellent bit of dueling mics. I’m with the Horseshit (1 fall) call on 3 ways, but I’m stoked nonetheless. BCC v FTR/Eddie felt like another minor classic on the way to two PPV masterpieces. I watched this twice, and loved it even more the second time. Jericho promo was pretty good, and along with the video gave us a nice set-up for the bout. Not sure what Renee was wearing there, but she finds a way to pull off this Susie Greene-esque choice. Ospreay/Callis Family promo was excellent. I welcome the mystery of Ospreay’s heavy accent. I love his energy and flow on the mic. Exciting times ahead. I love the hilarity of Don Callis as much as anything AEW has to offer. OC v Nick Wayne was good solid action leading to a huge dark horse v Roddy on this spectacular PPV card. Jay White/Asses/Assclaimed promo – sad emoji. Save Jay White. Skye v Stat was terrific. Skye Blue is having fun as a heel, and looking better every time out. I liked Jericho v Atlantis Jr. far more than I probably ought to have. This felt like a fun mid-show/not worried about the ratings Collision bout. Not to say this was a comedy bout, but I found myself highly amused. Bucks/Darby/Sting/Flair angle was pretty solid after the quick detour of Naitch reminded all of his last match. Loved how the Jacksons sold his flimsy offense. Like others have posted, I was watching this segment with my partner. Her excitement for the Sting rafter drop was infectious, and made this segment for me. I can’t remember a PPV line-up that I was more excited for than this. Goddamn, goddamn AEDub!

I mostly tuned out on them after Joshua Tree and definitely after Achtung Baby but their first couple albums when they were a young, hungry band who wrote ringing melodic rock songs and some sharp political anthems were amazing. “I Will Follow” makes my arm hair stand in end still. And the martial snare beat to “Sunday Bloody Sunday” is perfect. I just about wore through my cassette of Under a Blood Red Sky (never saw them live, really wish I had back in those days although really Joshua Tree was the first tour I probably would have been allowed to go to if I could’ve afforded it).

My first college girlfriend made me a really great, eclectic mix tape and “All I Want is You” was on there and I hadn’t thought about that tape of that song in years but yeah, it’s way up there. Has the heart of the early stuff but the epic anthemic tone of Mark II without drifting into the eventual self-indulgence.

Man, I am going to have to listen to some early U2 tomorrow!

Well said. I love thinking of that early U2 entrenched in a rivalry with Echo and the Bunnymen at the peak of their powers. I much, much prefer the Bunnymen, but the young and hungry U2 were a worthy foe.

Still unsure whether they're deliberately portraying the members of FTR as terrible singles wrestlers.

It seems pretty clear that Dax in singles is a way to showcase his strong skillset and be a credible win for the Singles wrestlers he faces. When Dax starts getting squashed and it doesn't lead to him getting a return tag team win you might have a case for the company that pays him/pushes him as a top star 'delibrately portraying' him as a 'terrible singles wrestler'.

I think of U2 in 4 main eras:

    1) Ascendant/Overtly Political - Boy thru Unforgettable Fire

    2) Spiritual/Maturing - Joshua Tree and Rattle & Hum

    3) Mature/Experimental - Achtung Baby thru All That You Can't Leave Behind

    4) OH GOD WHAT HAPPENED. - Everything after...

NYD is probably the quintessential song from U2 Mark I.  Very angry, very righteous, very, very good.  I tend to play it as the first song I listen to on the morning of 1/1.

Mark II for me, and this may be a hot take... but "All I Want Is You" may be the most perfect song they have ever done.

Mark III is "One".  This is not up for debate.

And the less said about Mark IV the better. Gun to my head... "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own".    I knew it was over when Bono said "Uno Dos Tres Catorce" and did the "I'm crazy" sign language.

(This is a rabbit hole, I have a lot of thoughts about Bono & The Edge...) 🙂

Pretty spot on. Anybody know what Dean thought of this Irish lot?

  10. Highest recommendation for all to check out the uncut version of the BCC v FTR/Eddie bout. The first commercial break had great heated exchanges while the second break really messed with the flow of action. From reading over the thread I sense the TV version must've paled in comparison. I thoroughly loved this match, but that assessment includes the divisive Dosido spot. Super stoked for the Sunday pairings.

While absolutely a looser story, Hangman Page's storyline from the start of AEW to him winning the belt from Omega was definitely a good, long arc.  They could have absolutely hammered it home better, and ending it just to give that goof Punk a vanity reign was a massive misstep, but it was definitely a good, long story.  I'm probably missing some steps, getting some out of order, etc., but:

    1. Almost wins the belt from Jericho in the first title bout, gets too much too fast
    2. Meanders a while
    3. Tags with Kenny to win the tag belts
    4. That falls apart; Hangman talks about winning them back but Kenny wants nothing to do with the team, and turns heel
    5. Gets manipulated by FTR into screwing his longtime friends, the Bucks, so the whole Elite is gone and Hangman thinks it's his fault
    6. Is befriended by the Dark Order
    7. Gradually finds his confidence and strength through friendship, all the while Kenny is talking shit about how he'll always be below him
    8. Wins the world title

I'd argue that AEW's story quality hasn't been the same since then.  But you can put some of that at the feet of the Punk mess, Cole getting hurt, MJF getting hurt, and TK not really being the best at adjusting his booking plans due to injuries, etc.

Number 2 is still my favorite part of Page's story, the 'Hangman says 'Hold My Beer'' era. I loved his reckless abandon. The above got a bit cheesewhiz on the friendship tip, but I'd agree overall that it was a good story.

I certainly can get behind a good story, Kingston for example has had several, but subtletly goes a lot further than the traditional Wrestling Story Arc generally allows. I'm more interested in character studies/character development than long term stories. The motivation of winning and being the best and inflated egos clashing with other inflated egos on similar journeys kinda covers things. As long as there are good promos on said road I can be more than satisfied. I get my fill of well told stories from movies and the seemingly endless number of cable and streaming television shows.

Either I’m mistaken or it’s a very good bluff as I have no interest in going over your history of posts. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume it’s my mistake for suggesting you’ve more than once claimed you’ll stop watching aew due to some complaint but didn’t and continued to complain. Sorry God!

Haha, I don't know how you interpret my posts but I haven't given any ultimatums. I could keep explaining perspective and opinion to you but at this point we're just talking past each other so time to call it a day. Enjoy your wrestling, bud!

To be clear, it was a reference to your repeated posting about how you’re going to stop watching aew, and then don’t but continue to complain. I welcome discussion, but the negative generalizations are missing that perspective you speak of. All that said, grateful for your courteous closing. I suspect we could very likely have a nice chat about wrestling in person where we would find lots in common. Godspeed fellow Torontonian.

Hard disagree that AEW is anything close to disciplined. Wrestlers come and go, pushes start and stop, angles go nowhere and get dropped all the time.

Certainly from time to time, but not 'all the time'. It's a fact of injuries first and foremost. There isn't a wrestling company I've ever watched regularly that wasn't prone to mistakes. AEW's batting average is a lot higher than most. Curious what promotion you've been watching all these years where this wasn't the case.

    Quote

In the ring, matches do not progress logically and often bop between spots that sometimes are killers and other times are shrugged off as nothing.

I'm sure there are matches where I would very much agree with you on this, but summing up every match from Danielson to FTR to the Bucks to Vikingo as such is pretty Corny.

    Quote

AEW didn't have anything BUT dream matches for a long time and now they're struggling to find an identity

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story I guess. I'll gleefully look forward to going back and watching the Dream Matches era I missed.

    Quote

I kept watching after Forbidden Door, it was the combo of the ridiculous Devil angle and Joe throwing away his ROH belt that led me to stop watching regularly. E

I too hated the ROH TV title dump and the Devil Angle. The latter an erroneous creative shift due to injuries. I just found too much other fun stuff happening week to week to sweat either like some sort of monumental reason to care so much. The Devil angle for example peaked during a time when we had consistently great Continental Classic matches happening.

    Quote

Even after that I try to give it a shot every now and then. And as much as I love being told I'm watching wrestling wrong, you're just going to have to accept that as a longtime wrestling fan I have a different standard for my wrestling than you

Very dramatic. Not unlike posting ultimatums to whether you'll personally continue watching or not. I urge you to follow through on that. The standard isn't changing.

I hear everyone about the backstory to Danielson/Akiyama, maybe the issue is that I only checked out the YouTube clip but that's part of the problem for them too. As a casual viewer of AEW, Kingston and Danielson wrestling Akiyama doesn't feel like an angle to me it feels like performers checking things off their bucket list

To be honest, I now know I was mostly transposing my disappointment with Danielson/Okada at Forbidden Door 2 onto a more recent match. I bought a ticket to see that because it was the last true dream match for me, the best of their generation in their styles, two of the best to ever do it. And the build was minimal and the event was endless and by the time I finally got to see this dream match live all my enthusiasm was sucked out of me. That's not every fans experience but it was mine and it's why I have a hard time getting hyped for anything AEW anymore

I wouldn't suggest Danielson v Okada from Forbidden Door was as excellent as it looked on paper, but I guess I saw the glass half full on that one. Being in the presence of even the tiniest work they did in that match felt exhilarating to me. Okada's on the button and simple dropkick might have been my favorite spot of the night. That match was totally under rated by all the ppl burned out after 4 hours of great wrestling. I'm somebody who wishes all PPVs were just under 3 hours including the Pre-show, but a precedent has long be set to expect an AEW PPV to run over 4 hours plus.

    Quote

I also view a wrestling show as a TV show more than a wrestling event, that may be where part of the disconnect with other viewers is. To me, a wrestling show needs to maintain a consistent internal logic and presentation to support its narratives and that requires a certain amount of discipline with your booking and in ring work. I can watch wrestling for wrestling's sake anytime and I have been since tape trading started, when I'm watching a wrestling show I want to be taken on a ride so I can get that emotional catharsis that is ultimately what we're all looking for out of our entertainment

It might be worth considering your disappointment with Okada v Danielson from 8 months ago is also tainting your viewing of AEWTV which pretty clearly has a consistent internal logic/presentation along with the required discpline with booking and ring work. Surely, the results will vary concerning taste, but to suggest it doesn't have it because they also like to present the audience with a few 'dream matches' is more than a bit distorted.

When everyone is special no one is special. There needs to be a return to having some matches be used solely for moving stories along without being a “good match” for 10 minutes before hand. Let a match be short and cut off because of something (runin, screwy finish, count out, anything) that will move the story for one or more of the wrestlers.

The Daniel Garcia v Adam Copeland match from Dynamite 2 weeks ago may scratch the itch. I think you might find some real satisfaction with the Monday Wrestling show. I'm of the belief we get more than enough screwball activity weekly for the special to still be special.

I love this company in many ways, but those two opening videos are not any of said reasons. Collision on the other hand!

  19. Maybe Sean Waltman for Edge Evans? Waltman had the Lynn matches and the early WWF run and then at some point became the definition of ‘go away heat’ then known as ‘XPac Heat’? I guess it all depends on how strongly you feel about Boy to Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby era You Two. The Bronco Buster was the equivalent annoyance to U2’s Pop. Or whatever that later automatic download album was called.

  20. Which wrestler's legacy most matches up with musician Sting's - arguably strong early band run to full 180 light pap solo? Dave 'Edge' Evans equivalent would be a bit easier - somebody with a somewhat unique style who became huge, and then watered down anything interesting and played the hits for the latter part of his career.

    Anybody got a line-up?

The thought process when all of this went down was that Tazz was supposed to be a really big deal as the sawed off killer for Vince, but then the RadicalZ came in and it all went to hell. Just the timing was against him. All four of those guys are going to push Tazz down the list.

The Toxic Head of Creative clearly saw Tazz at a certain level. If hypothetically those 4 world class performers didn't jump to WWE I still have a hard time believing it would have matter at all. It's not much different than suggesting a specific wrestler coming in after Raven hurt his push.

The thing about the myth of the Casual Fan is, social media exists. And you can see when Wrestling things go viral outside of Wrestling Twitter.

And usually when that happens, it's a feat of outstanding athleticism, a woman wrestler looking very attractive, or deathmatch wrestling being gross. It's almost never a promo. Promos will go viral within Wrestling fandom, not beyond it.

Looking at the Wednesday rating, it's safe to assume there are ppl watching Dynamite who don't automatically watch Saturday Collision. A well produced video package has good potential to add viewers in pretty much any content based industry. There's a reason every movie has a trailer running well ahead of the release.

17 minutes ago, Technico Support said:

Right, and I'd guess the number of those casuals who watch this week's viral wrestling video and then decide to start watching wrestling is somewhere between 0 and 1%, and I'm being charitable here.

What makes new wrestling fans?  I don't even know.  Maybe parents who are fans passing it on to their kids?  Maybe little kids happening to see it and thinking it's cool?  But I find it hard to believe a fully-formed adult just sees guys pretending to fight and is like "damn, that's for me."  I know there a degree of self-loathing here but wrestling still hasn't shed the stigma it's always had enough to be at the point where someone can go from zero interest to watching weekly.

If WWE is any indication, which it oughtta be, catchphrases and repeating talking points ad nauseum might be part of the equation.
