  1. they learned their lesson from the Becky/Charlotte Summerslam 2018 situation, I guess. ... general agreement, but ... when has Rhea ever not been on par with the heavyweights of the women's division? Rumble winner, Rumble finalist, Riptide on Nia, winning record against almost anyone you'd care to name, including Tozawa... I feel like her only kryptonite so far have been full-power Charlotte, Legend Beth and Black and Gold Era Raquel-plus-cheating, and it wouldn't strain credulity to have her as a favorite against any of them right now.
  2. Roman sure is lucky no one's been stepping up to challenge him since Mania.
  3. At a minimum, Jey at Clash of Champions, Strowman at Hell in a Cell and Balor at Extreme Rules
  4. I agree with the vast majority of this. I'll add -- they were trying to get Gunther to be using an Emerald Flosion (sp?) as a finisher, called The Last Symphony, but I appreciate the countervailing efforts to keep away from it. I'm also glad that this was a step back from Raw's winning-by-interference and just went back to beating his opponent. I had mixed feelings about the women's MITB - I think that it was made unnecessarily challenging to book on account of two thirds of the match being in their own factions (Trish/Zoey, Bayley/Io) and a bit weird when neither Zelina (nor Santos, nor Butch) got a whiff of help from their running mates (Priest is excused, everyone else in JD had other business on the card). Great finish. Finally: I have been waiting YEARS for someone to punch Roman in the dick on a kickout. Brilliant, cathartic moment, first in a series of them in an otherwise plodding main that will surely be effusively and excessively praised.
  5. Emma may be quietly building up a great CV with this bit. There was a match a few weeks back where she utterly murdered Roxy with a Widow's Peak... which started off with mutual respect, including Emma offering Roxy a hand up after a takedown. She only really hit the "I am being disrespected and I will not stand for it" character beats after Roxy dropkicks her.
  6. I think there's reasonable room to quibble with the MJF and SANADA ratings, but wow, the Jericho 6-man is overrated.
  7. Yup. In the Stratton/Ruca encounter we saw, they were pretty even on flips and grapples despite Stratton's head start, and every time Stratton would take over on offense, it was due to an unexpected (unsportsmanly) punch or kick. The other thing is that Thea's newfound grappling puts over Dempsey and Gulak in preparation for their upcoming issues with Chase and Hudson. Also, the "tapping fast to try to get the face to break the hold" thing could apply here -- I don't remember how aware Tiffany would have been of the ref at that moment. ... and yeah, Blair is positioned on a higher level. Her intro to NXT US was at the 'smashes Indi, strong contender against Meiko/Mandy' level, and her having beaten Lyons and Ruca into the injured reserve list probably shows they want to keep her up there. Hail struggling against her but stepping up to Stratton feels about right.
  8. Yeah, I posted that before he came out at the scrum and we learned about the arm. It's going to be a tricky match to go back and watch knowing that.
  9. I say this from a position of grumpiness (my signal was very shaky last night, AND I was primed to be wary thanks to a reddit post alleging more Vince involvement) -- I really did not like Gunther winning off a crutch shot from Vinci. Undermines almost a year of being basically honorable.
  10. The Japanese announcers called it a Kamigoye, at about 1:20 in the video in the linked tweet
  11. Sorry if this has been said upthread -- it'll be challenging to reevaluate Okada-Danielson with the knowledge that the seizure sell was to get his broken arm looked at. SANADA was ... OK. Looks great in a suit, but is undermined in the eyes of casuals (like myself!) by the "...huh?" of "just five guys" and the very poppy entrance and the ... blank space ... between his moves ... and also, not knowing his finisher, the moonsault came off as a deflating transitional move that happened to end things. He really needed a video package and more of a sense of who he is and how he works. (contrast with Tanahashi, where it's really easy to infer things from the energy of his entrance and "GO ACE!")
  12. oh, and someone really should have told Ospreay that doing a Crossface in Canada within a day of the anniversary of unspeakable things was not a thing to do.
  13. My appraisal of Danielson has plummeted as a consequence of the seizure spot and the anticlimax of the finish.
  14. His energy is nearly identical to that of Rollins' character from Southpaw Regional Wrestling: https://youtu.be/V3eHss1Mc8I?t=123
  15. https://twitter.com/RealJackCassidy/status/1672757485223149568 I unironically love this. The music, the energy -- they're all all-in on the AEW world, but there's just enough of a wink to let us be in on the joke with them. This meets one of my highest bars of wrestling critique, which is "can I send this to a friend who barely cares and be confident they'll appreciate it. "
  16. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbjnTMbUfv0 On this week's Hey! EW: six referees. One of the better ones, mostly.
  17. Really liked this episode overall. Glad that Dyad / GYV are regularly getting time for fun and occasionally-unhinged tag bangers. Surprised that Ivy's issues with Ava weren't continued. Ambivalent about Bron getting Seth while Melo gets Corbin. It also points to a bit of a potential issue on alignments -- right now we have Melo, Wes Lee and Nathan Frazer, which is a lot of good guys with gold (and Tiffany feels like she's on the cusp of not being booed all that much). I was initially a bit wary of the Thea/Cora match, because the story of Thea learning mat work from Gulak and Dempsey wasn't represented in the action, but then she recovered really well from not hitting the flip in the ropes and ended up winning with a sub she's never done before, so I felt good about it overall. Enofe/Blade was fun, but I felt like they rushed the talk at the end a bit. Both Enofe/Blade and Roxy/Tatum had some really good, clear limb work in setting up grapples - in E/B it was on one of the sunset flips, in R/T it was on the Russian Leg Sweep. Roxy/Tatum actually clicked for me in a way that other Roxy matches haven't -- Paxley's timing on some of the cutoffs was really good, and Roxy's awareness (in her rope-running and her dive) came through. She works least for me when she's doing a sequence, and I really liked, for example, that Tatum pushed her off before she could go too deep into her clubbering forearms. I really don't care for her handstand-headscissor thing, though. With that said, there was a lot of zoom in the post-match promo and the Pop Rox didn't look good, so I'm kind of worried Tatum is hurt?
  18. Y'all are right, I was out of line there. Sorry, @The Natural. It might be a general sense of joylessness at things outside the scope of the board, but I thought Gunther and Kaiser were both a bit off in the main last night. (Chelsea-Zoey too, but they're going for different things) I post-hoc rationalize this as them not having tagged with each other without Vinci in a long while, but it was a bit jarring when Graves, for example, told us to watch for a double-team and it just turned out to be Kaiser kicking someone in his corner while Gunther ... stood a few inches away, in the same corner. I guess the hallmark of the plausibly-post-Vince era is more benefit of the doubt to the talent.
  19. It would be preferable for your contributions to include context or insight, rather than merely an image or a transcription. In this case, the humor of the exchange relies on knowing that mere seconds before it, Zayn and Owens were berating Imperium and wondering where Giovanni Vinci was. (Vinci was attacked backstage last week by Riddle, and his absense meant a less frequently-teaming combination of Imperium against Zayn and KO. )
  20. worried that the sixth spot in the Women's MITB might end up going to whichever of Charlotte/Bianca loses on Smackdown.
  21. I've been thinking about this on and off for a bit, and Rollins accepting would seem to undermine the actual, current NXT champ.
  22. I too watched the Statlander episode of Hey EW.
  23. So even at the time, I thought this match was something special and weird. It's worked almost entirely on strikes, Sasha barely flies and they both do a good job of controlling the pace. It had me worried someone was injured to the point of having to bypass a lot of their standard moveset.
  24. ... as opposed to their promo segment from two weeks ago, which was just porn...
