I don't actually think Bay is an Ed Wood-levels of inept director. Like many have claimed. You can give him a good script and he can work with it. Problem is, he usually gets stuck with abysmal scripts and he can't get past it.

He's actually a pretty fascinating director.  In some ways, he's really as much of an auteur as just about anyone working today.  There are very few directors working today whom you can see a frame or two of their movie and go "that's a (Guillermo Del Toro, Wes Anderson, Lars Von Trier are the only others who come immediately to mind) film!" as much as Michael Bay.  In the Oral History of MTV book I read a while back, Tarsem Singh talked about how when he was in film school they were charged with making a music video and you've got this class full of hipster film students and they're all doing like Leonard Cohen etc. and being all film school-y and he said Michael Bay (who was also in his class) set his to Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away' and had all these gorgeous women in it and Singh said you "could tell that it just spoke right to his fucking' soul".

That said, I also think he badly needs an editor to step in and go "There's no way that Transformers needs to be almost 3 hours, lose some shit!" and some of his stuff is borderline unwatchable ('Transformers 2'!).  But I do find him fascinating.

I think the things that bug me about Bay are just too much to overcome.

    1) His action sequences have a really poor sense of place which disorients the audience and not in a good way.

    2) The seizure inducing shaky hand camera shots.

    3) Over reliance on big explosions

    4) Too much sophomoric humor.

Pain and Gain was his idea of an "ambitious art house film." It was even at odds with itself to the point that it skewers all of these subjects without any real focus.

The Rock's performance is maybe the only redeemable thing about the film.

  3.

which is the best UFC and/or boxing game to get for PS3?

I was gonna pick up the UFC game that has PRIDE rules on it simply for that reason but wasn't sure if it held up. As for boxing I know Fight Night is pretty much the only thing on the market and the story mode almost always sucks so which is the best of the worst haha?

I thought Fight Night Champion was really good.  The story mode was fun, and the actual gameplay felt like a reasonable improvement over Round 4.

I really like Champion too. Although, Champion is best if you are playing with a couple of friends. I keep debating picking it up. It occasionally pops up on an XBL Flash sale for like $4.99. I would maybe try to grab it under that premise if I were you.

  4. I hope Gus kills the suspense with this Nick Marshall situation. I think he has to suspend him since he's let it linger like this, which would give Arkansas a stronger chance against us.

I also think there are some advantages to having Jeremy Johnson out there at QB; however, it's kind of hard to play "AUBURN Fast" with him. He's a little more traditional as a QB and he did not execute the read option as well last year and just seemed a little slower in general.

A year could change that, but I don't think I exuded with confidence watching him with the second team at A Day this year.

  5. Humble Bundle is actually running TWO comics specials right now. In addition to the TWD bundle mentioned above, today they started a Transformers deal. Basic "at least $1" package is the first 4 years of the 1980s Marvel series. Green 'beat the average price (currently around $8.50) gets you All Hail Megatron, Autocracy and five Spotlight one-shots. The blue tier is $15 and gets you the first two TPBs each of the two current ongoings. More stuff, probably green tier, will be added next Wed. I'll probably jump on at green, since I already have everything in the blue tier and $15 is a lot to spend this month for double-dipping.

The Walking Dead Bundle sounds interesting because I've wanted to check out Invincible.

  6. I finally sat down with this week's The Leftovers last night. While it wasn't as strong as last week's stellar episode, I thought it was another solid hour of television. The lack of buzz around this show is a little discouraging for a second season, but I think people these days have a hard time sitting through a show that is such an emotional downer.

I'm not sure if Six Feet Under would survive today's tv climate for that reason.

According to his website, Ross is going to have Ed Ferrara on his podcast in September. That could get a little awkward.

They squashed the beef years ago.

    Cornette hasn't over the incident.

Has Cornette gotten over ANY incident?

Cornette needs a podcast. It'd be a fun listen.

Well have I got news for you!

I read Cornette's blog for a bit when he first started writing it however many years ago that was (was it 2008ish?).

I liked some of his writings on wrestling booking, but you can tell that a thick bitterness exists there.

Once he started to open up about being Jim Cornette, angry, bitter liberal, that was when I checked out on reading or listening to too much James E.

I did like the podcast he did with J.R. That was two old timers booking territories for 90 minutes.

  8. Also he was an addict. So making good life decisions wasn't his strong suit sadly.

The fact that his will was done in 2004 I think says a lot. I am sure he was more focused on getting his next fix than thinking "I should get with my attorney and update my will."

  9. Not like anyone is using the Go 2 Sleep anymore.

I'm sure they're still optimistic that Punk will come back sometime within the next two years.

Also, I think they are trying to do as little as possible to make fans chant CM Punk... except when AJ wrestles I guess.

  10.

No matter how I pump my stats up in NBA 2k14, I still fucking suck at it. I haven't cracked a C+ in any game on MyPlayer.

Set picks.  Lots and lots of picks.

Don't spam the 'A' or 'X' button (not sure which console) during cut scenes. You will get punished for it.

  11.

The biggest mistake they made was uniting the two main belts. Noone wants to hear this, because they like the *idea* of there only being one World Title and having two when there's no brand split *makes no sense*. I get that, but there's a whole bunch of guys who are just drowning without that belt to fight over. The midcard titles have not been elevated.

Personally, I'm waiting for them to get rid of the US title as well. One world title, the IC title and the tag team titles. To me, that's the perfect setup. Of course, then you'd have to have good characters and storylines to make everything else interesting, and I'm not sure the current bookers are up to that.

I think the problem there is you have no "bookers." You have a creative team and writers. Also, you have the problem with what's getting written in Stamford during the week is mostly ignored come the night of the show as reactionary decisions are made. I think merging the IC/US title is a good idea as well. I think you have to spend a year or so making every effort to elevate the IC title to an Upper Mid-Card title. I do not think you help matters by putting that title on Miz.

I also do not get the dislike for Rusev/Swagger. I thought the Russian stuff pushed a necessary envelope to get the appropriate heel reaction. Lana's attempts at cheap heat are good enough to even get boos from the "smart wrestling fans" who agree to play along for a change. I thought the match was a solid affair from two hosses. I am not sure if I agree with the booking here, as I would want to make Rusev be as strong of a heel as possible, but this is not something that can't be fixed with however they choose to blow off the feud. I just hope they don't do anything stupidly offensive that forces them to get cold feet and Hasan this gimmick away.

Then again, I found the tag title match to be pretty mediocre until the hot finishing stretch, which really saved the overall perception of that match.

Outside of the botches and Jericho not bumping on that apron DDT, I thought the match with him and Bray was solid. I liked the structure and the story they were telling through the ring. It was simple, and it was what you needed it to be with a young, big, intimidating guy taking on an older, smaller, more experienced wrestler.

  12. This might be the first game that I try to build a decent level with online. Normally shooters and games of this type find me tiring of them within a month, and that's with maybe 10-15 hours of online play put into it combined.
