My wife and I work (mostly from home) for the same giant tech company.  It’s been an interesting week.

    - Monday I meet her on the kitchen after our first round of morning meetings.  She says “never had that happen before”.  She was in a 1:1.  Dude had his camera turned on and porn on his personal pc screen visible behind him.
    - Tuesday I meet her the same way.  She’s been in a meeting with a bunch of ex military Israelis.  They tell her something big is happening Tuesday night.  Guess they were right

    - Wednesday she comes out saying all the VPs are freaking out.  Something bad coming tomorrow.  They were right too.
    - today I’m spending all my free time transferring 20+ years of personal stuff to my home pc, with the expectation that we’re both gonna retire this month.

Listening to the execs explain their plans and thinking right now.  First thing that came to my mind:

  2. One thing I've learned over a couple years of listening almost exclusively to bluegrass is that there's a bluegrass cover of EVERYTHING.  Especially if there doesn't need to be.  I assume the same goes for country.

Every jazz standard has a dozen of em.  Same with a bunch of classic rock songs you're sick of.  Stuck in the Middle With You is the bane of my existence at the moment.  Before that it was Reeling in the Years.  My Molly Tuttle worshiping 9 year old feels the same about Rhonda Vincent's cover of Please Mr. Please.  Hell, there's a bluegrass Proclaimers cover I've heard a few times.  It's not bad, but also nothing you ever need to hear.

The worst one I've heard is probably Pride in the Name of Love.  Rod Stewart weirdly translates well to though.

  4. Haven't tried dynasty yet, but did spend a bit of time in RTG.  Don't think that will hold my attention for long - it gets real repetitive real quick.

There was also a lot of nonsense, and also some good stuff in there.  I finally stopped screwing up the position challenges and made RB1 after about 8 games in to my first season.  then proceeded to get three carries over the following three games on an option heavy team (Air Force).  A loss to a 1-9 Nevada team knocked us out of bowl contention.

Hit the portal and transferred to TCU for my second season.  Season started off a mess, but we ended up in the Big Whatever They Are Now conference championship.  Game said I was suspended for the conference championship, since my guy isn't there to play school, but coach still let me play.  Sounds about right.  Won in OT over K State after a last second two point conversion to even get to OT.  Made it to the playoff despite four losses.  Tried a late comeback against Alabama, but fell short.

Third year we only lost one regular season game, against Baylor, then lost the rematch in the conference championship game.  Made the playoff, but had a first round exit again.  Decided I'd had enough of my guy and sent him off to the NFL.

Maybe I shouldn't have told the game I'm an Aggie, because I'm convinced Air Force's OC has to be Dennis Franchione, given the endless number of options/toss sweeps he ran to the short side of the field.  TCU's OL coach is certainly Steve Addazio.  When the opposing defense wasn't sacking our QB, they were tackling me the second I got the handoff.   Fortunately our receivers were uncoverable, which kept us in games.

Ran into a few bugs.  Twice had receivers go in motion and get hung up on my RB.  Game wouldn't let me do anything at that point, and both times I got hit with delay of game penalties.  I also got dinged by my coach for losing yards after catch on a touchdown (caught it in the end zone coming back to the QB).

The biggest bug was one they should absolutely have caught, though - A&M winning the national championship in my first year at TCU.  At least try to have plausible results, y'all.

  5. Missed out on seeing her Austin City Limits taping.  Put in for the ticket lottery, but no luck.  Hoping  to see her at some point.  Ideally with Golden Highway.

    RIP Kinky "Big Dick" Friedman.

My dad and his brothers are all Texas weirdos so I got to learn about him at a young age.

Dang, this sucks to hear.  I ran into him a few times since he was close with my buddy Lee.  When Lee died in 2010, Kinky did the eulogy.  I always figured having Kinky freaking Friedman deliver your eulogy was a sign of a life well lived.  I'd like to think they're out together somewhere drinking beer and hanging out with all the dogs they worked together to save.

One of the funniest things I've ever read was someone online complaining that "They Ain't Makin Jews Like Jesus Anymore", a song about knocking out an anti-Semitic bigot, was somehow anti-Semitic.

What was the song he wrote about John Hinckley that Stephen King referenced in one of his books?

Maybe thinking of Charles Whitman - "The Ballad of Charles Whitman"?

  7. Al least they’ve given up on the faux dignity and admitted they’re ready and willing to sell out to the highest bidder.

The SEC better go with someone with an easily chantable name.  An LSU crowd ain’t gonna be able to chant Apollo Capital Management in the fourth quarter of a night game.  Maybe Bucees.

  8. It's funny.  I've been really lucky with bugs for the last three Bethesda games.  I got the usual ones - side quests that won't close, flying mammoths, etc.  But nothing serious.

The only Fallout game I had real problems on was New Vegas, which was nearly unplayable due to constant lag.

This update is something else, though.  Anything less than 95% hit chance in VATS is almost certainly gonna miss.  95% is maybe 50/50.  Can't see indoors, since the lighting is almost nonexistent.

If you are below the age of 40 you probably won't even recognize most of the celebrities being impersonated in that video, unless you're a history student with an '80s bent. I caught Hogan in there, though!

Oof.  Pretty sure I saw the world premier of that one.  Back when the world premier of a video was something anybody even noticed.

Still remember the premier of Hot For Teacher.   Everybody at CD Fulkes Middle School - home of the fighting lizards - couldn’t wait for that one.

I guess that's the story of software development turned up to 11. You start up with a team of what you think is a sensible size, after a couple of delays realize that there is no way that you can keep your target (date and/or content-wise) and add loads of people to that project, completely ignoring Brook's law ("Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later."). Once the project is done (one way or the other), you are left with a huge team without much to do, because of course you don't start to think about the next project while the current one is still running (and the current project is always the only thing that is really important) or even better slowly move resources out of one project and move it into the other so that you have a smooth transition when the first project hits market. Looking at my company, hardware development probably is not that much different either.

Ive never seen or heard of anybody laying off most of a hardware design team post project completion.  I’ve seen it after a project cancellation, but only once.  And I’ve been through an insane number of cancellations.  Normally our next project is lined up long before the current one finishes.

Probably a bunch of reasons for that.  Hardware designers are a pain in the ass to find and hire.  So many specialties that don’t carry over to one another easily.  Also, the work that occurs after something gets released frequently is as much as the pre silicon work.

What does happen frequently is shifting whole teams to work on a project that’s got behind, then moving to some other emergency once they’re done with the first.  Been there plenty of times.  It sucks, but it beats getting laid off.

  11. I don’t love Borderlands as a single character player franchise.  Even if it is the one shooter that I’m not terrible at.  I’ve had a hell of a lot of fun with coop though.  There’s some nostalgia built into my love of the games too. Hearing Derek Burke in my head saying “prepare to be Trevonated bitches!” will never fail to bring a smile to my face, even if it’s a smile tinged with sadness.

I am straight up not having a good time.

EVA has entered the transfer portal.

I'll admit, I mentioned Alabama players hitting the portal when Saban retired, but I didn't expect it to be this severe.  They may be more depleted at DB by the portal than A&M was.

  14. In future turmoil news, Ross Bork is leaving A&M to take the Ohio State AD job.

So, congratulations Buckeye fans.  You’re getting the guy responsible for Jimbo’s insane contract extension.  And for whatever that Mark Stoops midnight deal was.  Good luck with that.

And now Ryan Day gets to hear he’s on the hot seat the first time he doesn’t win by three touchdowns.  And Elko hears the same when our offense looks like crap in the spring game, as is tradition.

  15. The portal might just get crazy again.  Saban out at Bama.   Maybe Harbaugh at Michigan too.  Plus whichever top end school(s) they poach from, and so on.  Get your checkbooks out CFB fans.

Aggies had our starter at QB (would be third stringer but #1 is out for the year and #2 was out for the year and then transferred) for exactly one play before he broke his arm.  Fourth stringer had thrown three passes before tonight.

Add in having a total of three receivers available and losing about 300 guys on defense, and this is gonna be ugly.

Said fourth string quarterback apparently finished with the fifth most passing yards since Fisher was hired.  If that doesn't explain Fisher's downfall, I don't know what does.

Also fun - two guys I'd never heard of caught passes, and A&M's leading tackler was a walkon.

Signs are pointing to Duke settling on Manny Diaz (who is currently Penn State's OC) as Head Coach

Had to look it up.  He's their defensive coordinator.  You had me wondering for a minute why Diaz would be an offensive coordinator, and why anyone would hire Penn State's offensive coordinator to do anything they thought was important.
