  1. The pitching on the island that hasn’t already defected is in rough shape. Very few guys can throw 90+ and their control isn’t the best. Cuban leagues haven’t even played night games since before COVID because the current economic situation. The inaugural Cuban Elite League was kind of a disaster: the league started late because the teams didn’t get their uniforms on time. Fan interest wasn’t that great either.

edit: is USA going to mercy rule Cuba?

Also, if Cuba in Miami goes off smoothly, it’ll show how much things have changed from the late 90s when a group like Buena Vista Social Club would get protested in Florida with the occasional threat called in.

My introduct to post-revolution Cuban music icons Los Van Van was the Miami protests to their concert back in 1999. Even as late as last year, Miami Cubans still protests whenever Los Van Van perform in Miami.

  3. There is so much energy for this tournament across the board that no spring training game (or most regular season games) can even come close to matching. It was a freak injury to Edwin Diaz. That sucks. But LOLMets is definitely a thing.

  4. There's probably going to be enough of the old guard Cuban exiles to raise a stink about Cuba playing in Miami, even with current MLB defectors on the squad.

Either way, the atmosphere in Miami the rest of the way is going to be electric judging by the Puerto Rico/Dominican Republic game.

  5. I do agree with you on the reasons this Cuba team seems like a half assed dream team. I saw enough of Luis Robert and Yoan Moncada at White Sox games last year that left a lot to be desired. I’ve also seen a bit of Serie Nacional and Liga Elite de Beisbol in Cuba to see the overall quality of play is really down. A lot of Cuban pitchers have control problems and they don’t throw particularly hard either. Fielding is a bit lackluster and there aren’t that many power hitters right now either.

  6. Cuba starting 0-2 isn't good for their hopes of advancing. There's such a disconnect with the American broadcast trying to hype up the Cuban team vs the sad the reality that their overall quality has fallen off a cliff.

Here's the thing about streaming. There's a limit to what I can support, and this year, MLS is outside of it. I have NESN for Bruins/Sox, YouTubeTV for Celtics/National TV, and Peacock/ESPN for additional sports. One could argue I'm already subscribed to too many things already. Locking MLS behind a paywall on Apple+ TV is a step too far.

If you have T-Mobile, they are offering free MLS Season Pass. That's how I'm watching this season.

Someone sent me a screen shot of what Dave wrote about the Booking award and my first thought was “those vote totals seem a lot lower than I remember.” If true, I wonder if that’s a sign of how many people Dave has run off.

He has to have run off a large part of the Jim Cornette style smart marks that would have subscribed, which is probably a decent chunk of what was Meltzer's reader base. As for the Stardom support this year, that feels like an even bigger niche of a niche. Joshi is always going to have an outsized influence with Dave's core audience.

  9. I didn't hate the Rudy Charles ref bump as much as most people did. He was smooshed in the corner and took several back elbows before clumping in typical ref fashion.

Would I have liked Sami to win? Sure. Did it make sense to beat Roman now? I don't think so. I'd rather see this than anything with Bray Wyatt.

Montez Ford came out of that chamber looking like a million bucks. The sky is the limit for him. Logan Paul is such a great scumbag that he fits wrestling like a glove.

27-point comeback and Al Michaels and Tony Dungy called it with all the energy and excitement you'd expect from a quarterfinal match at the World Badminton Championships.

These comebacks seem to be a lot more commonplace now that NFL betting is largely legal. It lends credence to the conspiracy theory that the NFL is rigged.
